Mayor Dave Kreft says community pride enabled the fire hall to define Arlington’s Main Street landscape in 1890 and again today.
But it took a lot of work.
In April 1999, the Arlington City Council approved a motion to create a five-year plan for the community and the preservation committee was later established.
Initial estimated restoration costs in 2000 were $151,624 provided all materials were bought by the committee and only volunteer labor was used.
But the project was completed at about half the original estimate after using used instead of new brick. Some of the bricks used were transported by volunteers from Menominee, Wis. to Arlington.
