Wallace ‘Wally’ Dean Nordstrom
MELROSE — Wallace “Wally” Dean Nordstrom, 79, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at Black River Memorial Hospital in Black River Falls.

He was born Dec. 6, 1928, on the home farm in Mill Creek Valley, Town of North Bend, to Charles and Olga (Beck) Nordstrom. He attended Mill Creek Grade School and graduated from Melrose High School in 1948. During his senior year of high school and for several years afterward, he worked as a farm laborer for Harvey and Mae Patterson. He then served as a custodian for Melrose-Mindoro High School for 34 years. He was baptized and confirmed at South Beaver Creek Lutheran Church. Wally was a lifelong member of the church and also served as its custodian for 23 years. Family gatherings were one of his greatest loves along with his work and dedication to the church. Although he never married, he kept up with family events, especially what his nieces and nephews were doing. He wasn’t much to carry on conversations but he was a very good listener. Wally was a resident of Pine View Care Center since 2003.

Wally is survivied by two brothers, Chester (Marjorie) Nordstrom and Howard (Ann) Nordstrom; a sister-in-law, Verda Nordstrom; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Carlyle and Norman; and three sisters, Gladys, Helen and Marcella.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at South Beaver Creek Lutheran Church in rural Ettrick. The Rev. John Ashland will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. Monday to services, both at the church.

Zwickey Funeral Homes-Melrose Chapel assisted the family with arrangements.

Mildred ‘Millie’ Snider

Mildred “Millie” Snider, 80, of La Crosse went to be with the Lord on Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center after a long battle with cancer. She was born June 1, 1928, in Hokah, Minn., to Emil and Anna (Leahman) Walter. On Sept. 21, 1946, she married Clyde “Dick” Snider Sr. in La Crosse and he preceded her in death on March 16, 1992.

The family lived in Milwaukee for over 15 years, where Millie worked for Continental Can and Cork Co. and also as a waitress. After the family returned to La Crosse, she worked as a waitress for several restaurants and as a dietary aide for Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center until her retirement.

Family was the center of Millie’s life, having raised six children. She is survived by five of her children, Diane Doverspike of La Crosse, LaVonne (Steve) Frost of Ocala, Fla., Gary (Donna) Snider, Clyde “Butch” Snider Jr. and Ernest Snider, all of La Crosse; nine grandchildren, Tammy (Jason) Breza, Sabrina Doverspike, Robert Doverspike, David Winters, Jessica (Joe) Cowburn, Michelle Snider, Matthew Snider, Donald Snider and Joseph Snider; several great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; three brothers, Alvin Walter of La Crosse, Jerome (Arlene) Walter of Sparta and Raymond (Jean) Walter of West Salem; two sisters, Rita (John) Strauss and Irene (Dave) Jiracek, both of La Crosse, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Snider, her parents and two brothers, Herbert and Robert Walter.

Millie will be sadly missed by all who came to know and meet her and her many friends she made during her lifetime.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mary, Mother of the Church Parish at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 2006 Weston St., La Crosse. The Rev. Douglas Robertson will officiate. A committal service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m.; and again from 11:30 a.m. Tuesday until the time of services at the church. Memorials are suggested to Mary, Mother of the Church Parish, La Crosse.

SPRING GROVE, Minn. — Armie Ranzenberger, 83, of Spring Grove died Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at Tweeten Lutheran Health Services in Spring Grove. Arrangements are pending with Roble Funeral Home, Spring Grove.

EASTMAN — Sylvia M. Blazek, 90, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints Medical Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Eastman, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien, where there will be a parish rosary at 7 p.m. and a wake scripture at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church or to a charity of your choice.

Adeline Hoff

ARCADIA — Adeline Hoff, 88, of Arcadia died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Medical Center in Arcadia.

She was born Jan. 30, 1920, in the town of Glencoe, Buffalo County, Wis., to Mike and Eva (Jonietz) Kotlarz. Adeline married Earl Daly. They later divorced. On Feb. 4, 1950, Adeline married Carl Joseph Hoff. He died on June 15, 1987.

Adeline was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and the Rosary Society. She worked for four years at the Arcadia Cleaners and retired from the A-G Broiler Plant in Arcadia after 29 years. She was also a volunteer at Arcadia’s Nutrition Center.

Adeline has two daughters, Charlene (Gary) Peterson of Whitehall, and Betty (Steve) Daly of Bice Sequim, Wash.; two sons, Bobby (Sharon) Daly of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Jerry (Barb) Daly of Huron, S.D.; two stepdaughters, Janice (Dean) Hanson of Taylor, and Audrey Berg of Blair; 21 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; and maybe many more.

Preceding Adeline in death were her parents; three sisters, Bernice Kowahl, Eileen Ressel and Marion Daly; and two brothers, Aaron and Thaddeus Kotlarz.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church, Arcadia, with Father Michael Klos officiating. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery in Blair.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Wozney-Killian Funeral Home, Arcadia, where there will be a 7 p.m. prayer service and a 7:30 p.m. rosary. Friends may also call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Casket bearers will be Adeline’s grandsons.

Memorials are preferred to “Family Wishes.”

Robert ‘Bob’ C. Stavlo

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn./LA CROSSE — Robert “Bob” C. Stavlo, 71, of St. Louis Park, Minn., formerly of La Crosse, born Aug. 30, 1937, died unexpectedly at home Sept. 3, 2008. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mynard H. Stavlo and Irene J. Stavlo; brother, William Stavlo; and sister, Elizabeth Ostreng. Survived by sons, Brandon (Jennifer) and Brent; sisters, Helen Cole and Reddiece (Edward) Semb; brother, John (Peggy) Stavlo; former spouse, Patricia Stavlo; a niece and numerous nephews. Bob was a graduate of La Crosse High School, a veteran of the United States Air Force, a musician and a person who loved working on cars. He was a Quality Assurance Technician at Pillsbury until his retirement.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Woodruff-Jandt Funeral Home, 4239 Mormon Coulee Rd., La Crosse. Interment will be in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Memorials preferred to the family.

Angela Kay Weichert

SPRINGFIELD, Va./CALEDONIA, Minn. — Angela Kay Weichert, 68, of Springfield and formerly of Caledonia died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at her home after a short illness with cancer. She was born March 5, 1940, in Fillmore County, Minn., to William and Irma (Karon) Dvorak. She graduated from Loretto High School in Caledonia and attended University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Winona State University, where she received her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in American history. Angela married Greg Weichert on May 21, 1960, in Brownsville, Minn. She taught at St. Mary’s Grade School in Caledonia until 1980. She moved to Virginia and taught government to learning disabled students at Robinson High School until her retirement in May 2008. She thoroughly enjoyed government, politics and traveling.

She is survived by her husband, Greg of Springfield; a son, David of La Crosse; her mother, Irma Dvorak of Winona, Minn.; two brothers, Bill (Nancy) Dvorak of Rochester, Minn., and Francis (Cindy) of Brownsville; two sisters, Monica Leamen of Walkersville, Md., and Adeline Young of Kankakee, Ill.; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia. Father Gregory Leif will officiate. Friends and family may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Holy Family Hall, behind St. Mary’s Church, 405 S. Pine St., Caledonia, where a rosary will be said at 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to the service Friday at the church. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the donors choice. McCormick Funeral Home, Caledonia, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Vernita A. Clements

SPARTA — Vernita A. Clements, 63, of Sparta died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare, Sparta. She was born on Dec. 5, 1944, in Sparta to Otis and Elverda (Hanson) Anderson. She grew up in Sparta and graduated from Sparta High School.

Vernita married Roger Clements on July 2, 1966. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed entertaining family and friends. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Roger of Sparta; her daughter, Tami (Brandy) Ender of Sparta; her grandchildren, Bodhi, Keith and Tre; and two brothers, Verdell (Joyce) Anderson and Verlyn Anderson, both of Sparta.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Sparta, with Father James Leary OFM Cap officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Sparta.

Family and friends are invited to call from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday and 10 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, both at Lanham-Miller Funeral Home, Sparta. Online condolences may be offered at www.lanham-miller.com.

Virginia E. Strande

BLAIR — Virginia E. Strande, 86, of Blair died on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire, Wis. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church with burial in the church cemetery, both in Blair. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Jack Funeral Home in Blair and also one hour prior to the services Wednesday at the church.

Ernest ‘Ernie’ Hartmann

COTTONWOOD, Ariz. — Ernest Hartmann, loved and known as “Ernie,” 81, resident of Cottonwood, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, after a brief illness.

He was born Sept. 20, 1926, in Newark, N.J., to Frederick Ernest and Emma (Lange) Hartmann.

Ernie attended Utah State University from 1948 to 1952, from which he received his bachelor’s degree; later he attended the University of Utah from 1968 to 1972, where he obtained his doctorate’s degree.

Ernie taught parks and recreation for over 20 years at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. He was also a WWII veteran, having served his country with the United States Navy.

Ernie was always very active with the Boy Scouts of America and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award. He also enjoyed bird watching and had the opportunity for world travel.

Ernie leaves behind his wife, Beth Hartmann of Cottonwood; his son, Alan Hartman with his wife, Mary Jo, of Salt Lake City, Utah; his daughter, Pam Lovejoy with her husband, Kim, of Waukesha, Wis.; his sister, Lore Ullrich of Union, N.J.; and his grandson, Zeke Hartmann of Salt Lake City.

A memorial service will be held at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1377 Hombre Drive in Cottonwood on Monday, Sept. 8, at 3 p.m. Following the service, a reception will be held at 4 p.m. at Westcott Funeral Home, 1013 E. Mingus Ave., in Cottonwood.

Nancy Horstman

After 63 beautiful and generous years, Nancy Suzanne Horstman—wife, mother, grandmother, friend and dear heart — bid “auf wiedersehen” to friends and family on Sept. 5, 2008, after a brief but resilient fight against idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Nancy was born to Phyllis (Gustafson) and Robert Eilertson on Jan. 15, 1945, in La Crosse and married Henry “Dick” Horstman on Jan. 7, 1963. They built a home where they raised five children, created a multitude of memories and fostered a love of nature and dedication to family.

After graduating from Logan High School, Nancy studied music and psychology at UW-La Crosse. Nancy took a job as custodian of Christ Lutheran Church and School in 1986, but her greatest pride came while taking care of her children and grandchildren.

A lover and giver of music, Nancy played the piano daily and provided lessons to countless students. She had a gift for art and presentation and enjoyed drawing, painting and planning events and gatherings. She had profound pride in her family and found her deepest fulfillment within their company. Nancy established pen pal relationships with friends overseas; was adept at making a delicious meal out of any ingredients; followed her mother’s tradition of sewing and quilting; enjoyed gardening and taking long drives with Dick; and was a constant giver of her time and love. Nancy was the nucleus, the foundation, the heart and the fabric binding the lives of many and memories of her love and lessons will live on forever. Nancy, Grandma, Mom, “Nance” ... you are missed.

Remaining on earth to honor her memory are her husband, Henry R. Horstman; sons, Chad (Shelly) Horstman, Henry “Kevin” (Karen) Horstman, Aaron (Elizabeth “Liz”) Horstman and Karl (Carrie) Horstman; daughter, Tamara (Peter Riphahn) Horstman-Riphahn; father-in-law, Henry “Hank” Horstman; nine grandchildren, Rachel, Dietrick, Robert, Joshua, Molly, Jordan, Katharine, William and Lucas; as well as numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and other relatives. Nancy is preceded in death by her parents, mother-in-law, Leona (Loomis) Horstman and granddaughter, Prima Ann.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Christ Lutheran Church, 500 Park St., West Salem. Memorial and visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Dickinson Funeral Home, 809 Gillette St., La Crosse.

MERRILLAN, Wis. — Roy J. Eddy, 82, of Merrillan died Friday at Black River Memorial Hospital, Black River Falls. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Merrillan United Methodist Church, with burial with military rites in Oakwood Cemetery, Merrillan. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton, and also one hour prior to services at the church.

Mary M. Benda

WATERVILLE, Iowa — Mary M. Benda, 85, of Waterville died Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, Iowa. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Pius Cherry Mound Catholic Church, rural Harpers Ferry, Iowa. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Martin Funeral Home, Waukon, where there will be a 4 p.m. scripture service.

Verla Jean Kramer

LANSING, Iowa — Verla Jean Kramer, 83, of Lansing went to meet her Lord on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Hospital in La Crosse. She was born Sept. 21, 1924, in Soldiers Grove, the daughter of Lawson and Mabel Bailey. She received her education in the Soldiers Grove Schools. She was united in marriage to Franklin Kramer in 1941. They were later divorced. Verla had lived in De Soto, Milwaukee and La Crosse, and had worked in various occupations before entering Thornton Manor in Lansing. She enjoyed gardening and craftwork.

Verla is survived by four sons, Ronald Kramer of Wauzeka, Gerald Kramer of Waukesha, Wis., Robert (Judeen) Kramer of De Soto, and Gregory Kramer of Wauzeka; three daughters, Diana (Charles) Hultine of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Sue Ann Moulis of La Crosse, and Constance

Fox of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Ardeth Bailey and Larry Bailey of Janesville, Wis.; and many other relatives.

Verla was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Arthur B. Kramer and Steven B. Kramer; and siblings, Delores Bailey, Galen Bailey and Harley Bailey.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home, 320 Main (Hwy. 82) in De Soto. Pastor Libby Howe will officiate. Friends may call from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m. Wednesday to services at the funeral home.
