Western student Jenna Mills was first runner-up, and Viterbo student Brianna Herber was second runner-up.
Ekern, who sang “I Can’t Do it Alone” and who calls her platform “Give a Child a Smile,” won a $3,000 cash scholarship. She scored the highest marks in the interview portion of the contest, and received the Sally Stinson Community Service and the Spirit of Miss America awards.
UW-L student Megan Kublank’s ballet performance to “Danse Espagnole” from “The Nutcracker” won the Grenadier Corps’ honors for highest talent score, and Herber won the Lorraine Gay Memorial Academic Scholarship.
The event’s theme was “Big City Lights,” with 2008 Miss La Crosse/Oktoberfest Mandy Nogle performing and Miss America 1987 Kellye Cash serving as emcee.
