At the young age of 15, Marion went to Vienna, Austria, for a year to study piano and art. After graduating from Oak Park and River Forest High School, she continued her studies at the Chicago Art Institute where she was a life member. She then worked from an independent studio drawing ads predominantly for Charles A. Stevens and Carson Pirie Scott department stores in Chicago. Marion had a lifelong love of the visual arts, literature and music. Her husband’s fondest memories are those of her musical moments.

In 1967, Marion and Carolie opened “The Hired Hand” gift shop in the family’s barn, offering handmade crafts in the loft while sheep rested in the barn below.
Marion’s father built “Kakagi Lodge” on Crow Lake in Ontario, Canada, where she renewed herself during childhood summers. In their retirement, in the pristine woods among the birds, Red and Marion built a log cabin — it was their “Golden Pond.”
