A free screening for peripheral vascular disease and stroke will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 30 at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center in La Crosse. The screening will be in the Marycrest Auditorium on the second floor of the St. Francis Building.

Peripheral vascular disease is a potentially life-threatening yet treatable condition in which the arteries of the legs gradually “harden” and fill with plaque. The plaque buildup narrows and blocks the arteries and slows the flow of blood to the legs. Early detection and treatment is key in the prevention of the potentially fatal progression.

Stroke screening uses ultrasound technology to provide images of the carotid arteries on both sides of the neck and measure the velocity of the blood flow through these vessels.
