What we knew: Former newspaper-delivery man Martin T. Holtet, 50, of 235 S. 19th St., was charged Aug. 4 in U.S. District Court in New York with wire fraud. Holtet is accused of defrauding the New York Times of $227,000 in delivery fees and $98,000 in printing expenses by submitting thousands of fake subscriptions while under contract to deliver the paper in the La Crosse area from 2002 to 2008. Holtet appeared Aug. 5 in federal court in Madison, was released and told to report Sept. 9 to a federal court in Manhattan. A New York judge on Sept. 3 gave Holtet an extra week to report to New York so he could deal with family issues in Wisconsin.
What’s new: Holtet appeared in the New York court Tuesday. Magistrate Judge Debra Freeman allowed Holtet to be free on a signature bond but said he must remain in New York, Wisconsin or Minnesota for employment or family matters.
What’s next: A preliminary hearing is Oct. 6 in New York.
