La Crosse woman wins $600K jackpot at casino

.
BLACK RIVER FALLS — Jane Schwaegerl always thought winning an almost $600,000 jackpot would come with bells, whistles and plenty of fanfare.

So when the progressive slot machine at a Black River Falls casino remained silent while showing she’d hit a $595,000 jackpot Wednesday, she figured something was wrong.
“I thought the machine was broken,” Schwaegerl said Thursday.

There was no mistake: The La Crosse nurse had captured the jackpot on a machine that pays out based on bets from casinos in 14 states.

Schwaegerl still is trying to come to grips with her sudden stroke of good fortune and is wrestling with why it happened the way it did. But she is certain there was a spirit involved.

Monday, Schwaegerl and a friend from Florida followed the same pre-casino ritual the friend’s late father and brother followed by having breakfast at the same truck stop. That ritual didn’t pay off, as Schwaegerl left without winning much.

But two days later, Schwaegerl was enjoying her day off work when a little voice told her to go back to the casino.

After winning a small amount at the regular quarter slot machines, Schwaegerl decided to try her luck on the more expensive machines.

“The first wheel came up and then the second wheel came up. I thought I’d never seen two on the pay line before and thought, ‘Please, give me something to go with it so I can win something,’” Schwaegerl said of the winning play. “When the third one fell down, I thought, ‘Holy cow, I just won.’”

Schwaegerl said she doesn’t expect her life to change much from the jackpot winning, but said it may enable her to take early retirement when the time comes. She also plans to use the money to spoil her six grandchildren.

She still has to decide whether to take the prize in a lump sum or 25 annual installments.

" Hey wiseguy, It's not a blame game. This is about understanding that you and probably Common Sense too, have a position of power (that I am calling privilege) in this society that Native Americans do not-- whether that Native American looks like a stereotyped mascot or "passes for white". The devastation of the tribal nations from the point of contact with Europeans due to disease and then subsequent "the only good Indian is a dead Indian" kind of attitude we ALL heard and saw on the news during the spear fishing court trials in the 1980s--although you might be too young for that--(watch the PBS video POV: Lighting the Seventh Fire) we are ALL in the position of fighting racist language, values, attitudes and beliefs when we experience them. Like ryeguy, the first step on the path of healing is admission. "

" I can't believe some of you negative ninnies. Gambling has been going on for many years before the casinos opened. Why can't you just be happy for this woman. There are worse vices than gambling...drugs, drunks, sexual predators, etc... Someone in my family was in the mofia, he died over 40 years ago, and believe me there was plenty of action. If you crossed them the outcome wasn't pretty.

I would suggest to anyone who only wants to read negative news not to read stories like this one. "

" The media jumps all over these big winners but rarely reports on all of the losers. Hey Tribune! How many foreclosures are due to people who are addicted to the legalized gambling we've allowed in the recent years? Bankruptcies? Divorces? How many crimes have been committed, knowing for every thief and embezzler that is caught there are many more who aren't even prosecuted? How many suicides? The cost for all of this fun is high, much too high. "

" Wait, you can't BLAME every white person alive today for the crimes of slavery or atrocities against the natives 100 years ago OR that they bear some responsibility for the actions of their ancestors even IF you prove their ancestors were involved. Also, skin color does not necessarily mean your ancestors were enslaved or decimated. How do you pay for past sins when they are all dead now? What's FAIR? Who pays and who benefits and who decides? "

" These people that make arguments against gambling, its just a hoot. EVERY gambler has an illness, just like anyone that has a beer is an alcoholic.

What boring lives you must lead, fyi, the sky is not really falling.

I bet they're vegatarian, bottled water drinking, prius driving, suck the fun outta everything types. "I'm better than you and I save the earth"

Everything can be fun in moderation, and no, not everyone loses all their assets to gambling, only the addictive type that have no self control which is a much smaller percent than the fun lovers. "

" Good for her. But I why would the tribune choose to glamorize a casino jackpot win by placing the article on the front page and parroting typical casino (lottery, too) overstatement of winnings in the headline? ($600k is paid over 25 years and the actual cash payout (lump sum) before taxes is considerably less than $600k.) The article
concludes on page seven, which also features a large casino advertisement covering almost the bottom quarter of the page. Hmm..... coincidence or another planned advertisement lead-in? "

I have a feeling the casino may be getting most of that money back from her. "

" Jane, run - do not walk - as fast as you can. Do not go back. Gambling on your day off in the middle of the week is a problem. I don't care how much or how little you spend. Been there, done that. I watched an uncle, 2 nephews and a dear friend lose their homes, and ruin their families before I finally quit gambling. P.S. Of those 4 people I mentioned, my uncle (and his wife) continued to gamble and he ended up drinking himself to death. The other three are still gambling & their lives are in turmoil all of the time. "

Too many people who hear the voice go back again and again to gamble their mortgage and grocery money, max out their credit cards and even steal from employers and family in order to try to win."

That's exactly right. Gambling is a sickness.

" lifelonglearner, what, exactly, do you think will " help create the healing that needs to happen in our community"? Money? Do you really think that will erase all the attitudes that prevent that healing? Will that make the minority with an attitude change? Will that make the rest of us like them if we didn't find them likeable before? The only thing that will bring the "healing" is for everyone to do the best they can to make a life for themselves, try to be nice to their neighbors, and stop whining and feeling sorry for themselves. Most of us have no problem with anyone who tries to live that way. It's people like you who feel so darn guilty and minority leaders that promote victimhood that prevent healing. "

" Quick history/law lesson here. Indian tribes in Wisconsin (and other gaming states) DO NOT have casinos and other gaming enterprises because it is a way to make up for past wrongs. Rather, they enjoy the opportunity to operate casinos because the United States has always recognized and engaged in a "government to government" relationship with Tribes. The federal government passed the Indian Gaming Act that allowed Tribes to engage in gambling if the states they were located in allowed Class I, II or III gaming. Every citizen of the United States holds two citizenships, one the USA, the other to the state where they reside. Enrolled (key word there) American Indians have three citizenships, USA, state and tribal. "

" Ryeguy: Way to look the serpent of racism in the eye! It's a tough step to take to the higher plane of consciousness and multiculturalism.
Wiseup: Read what you said again. Whites or Caucasian race (whatever term you wish to use) in this society are still beneficiaries of those historic actions and have a level of privilege in this society of today that many Native Americans do not enjoy because of those atrocities. Please think about that and ask yourself what you can do to help create the healing that needs to happen in our community. I'm not telling you how to live, and I ask you the following: How do we attain balance? Where do we go from here? What is true progress? What will make my actions seem honorable two generations from now? "

" I wonder how much money Jane has lost over the years to casinos? SOunds like she goes pretty frequently. No mention of this in the article. Casinos, like lottery tickets, are a tax on the poor and the mathmatically-challenged. "

Blaming US for slavery, mass murder, atrocities that were committed generations ago is RACIST and DIVISIVE! You control freaks don't want people to drink, smoke, gamble, ride motorcycles, own guns, laugh, play or enjoy life. GET OVER YOURSELF! Adults decide for themselves how to live their lives and they don't need you to tell others how to live! "

I would take the lump sum, if you have grandchildren you are probably old enough to start thinking about retirement, it would make a nice nest egg. Don't let them keep it let it grow for you. "

" Casinos are OK. We got Manhattan for a box of trinkets. We stole the Black Hills after gold was discovered there. We slaughtered hundreds of women and children of the Nez Perce as they tried to just get away to Canada. We broke every treaty we ever signed with the native peopls for two hundred years. So now they are taking a bit of interest payment back one sucker at a time. I say go for it! And congrats to the occasional winner who shares the wealth. "

" I love how elitist people like Big Spender think that they have all the wisdom in the world and need to share it with the unenlightened. As the article clearly indicates, Ms. Schweagerl and millions of others go to the casino for entertainment and fun. Much like people go to taverns, community theatre, the symphony or watch NFL football for entertainment. Perhaps the Tribune should publish "warning headlines" for every story. Next Monday, we might see, "Rogers leads Pack over Cowboys, Millions still losing net value in 401ks."

Congratulations to Jane for her big win. "
