The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse freshman had no idea professors work an average of 55 hours per week and she thought starting salaries were well above $35,000 to $42,000.

Dispelling misconceptions about professors was the lesson of the day at UW-L 100 class Thursday. Every day of the course is some new topic about UW-L’s campus, services, issues and facilities.
“It helps freshmen become acclimated to the college experience,” said Jim Jorstad, who
co-teaches Thursday’s UW-L 100.
Classes in coming weeks will be devoted to chatting with Chancellor Joe Gow, finding library resources and discovering UW-L traditions.
“I’ve actually learned a lot here — I learn about the school and what’s around the community, and that is helpful because I am not from here,” said Emily Martin, a freshman from Wrightstown, Wis.
Earlier this week, the class invited Matt Vogel, UW-L community health specialist, to talk about drinking on campus.
“I think the discussion surprised a lot of them,” said Jorstad.
Freshman Brian Boyea was surprised to learn that 36 percent of his peers in class didn’t drink alcohol when they went out.
“I thought it would be less than that,” he said.
UW-L 100’s variety of speakers keep the class exciting, said Boyea.
“It’s not necessarily helping anyone’s major requirements, but it is a lot of helpful tips for college students,” he said.
But prospective freshmen should be aware the class is no walk in the park, said Jorstad. Students work for their one credit, he said, with quizzes, assignments and a speech at the end of the semester.
“I would definitely suggest people take it,” said Shumaker. “It made me more comfortable to ask questions that I would feel stupid asking in a big lecture hall.”
