News tracker: Health care referendum

What we knew: The La Crosse County Board voted Aug. 21 to place a health care referendum on the November ballot. The advisory referendum would pressure the Legislature to enact health care reform by the end of 2009 that would guarantee every Wisconsin resident affordable coverage as good as what is provided to state legislators.

What’s new: At the board’s meeting Thursday evening, Supervisor Ray Ebert asked to have the vote reconsidered after finding the board was not informed it could cost up to $3,000 to place the measure on the ballot. The board agreed to reconsider the proposal, but the vote to remove the ballot measure failed, with 13 yes to 20 no.

What’s next: The measure will remain on the Nov. 4 ballot.
