Bike group to kick off carfree week

.
RoZ used to work driving delivery trucks in Kansas City, Mo.

Then she met Obbie Z, learned to ride bicycles in cities at age 43 and hasn’t driven an automobile in the past two years, she said.
Monday, the two local promoters of a carless lifestyle will present their Transportation Liberation Roadshow as part of a kick-off event for World Carfree Week.

The show will be 7:30 p.m. at Port O’ Call in the Cartwright Center at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, part of the Carfree Equinox Party that will begin at 7 p.m.

“We want them to know that there’s a way that they can live without being car-dependent,” said RoZ, now 57.

The couple went carfree themselves in 2004, when they sold a truck they hardly used.

Among the bicycles they now use is a recumbent tandem, which they call their stretch limo.

Other local bicycle organizations and advocates also will participate in Monday’s event.

Additional events are scheduled throughout the week, including the chance to learn how to use bicycle racks on city buses from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday on Badger Street in front of UW-L’s Whitney Center.

" Sorry theb, I disagree with you. I used to bike in my younger days to work and school until I reached the age of 24. Girls want guys who are both fit like using bikes and ready to go with their motorized vehicles. Vehicles are faster to get where you're going therefore more convenient. I still ride my bike for exercise and recreation in spite my arthritic knees, but life demands I use a car to do most travelling. That's why hybrids are the future we need now along with electric cars. We have the technology to be a better America, we just lack those willing to make the changes needed to see it happen. "

" Hey wizard, how about you grow a pair? I ride in the winter. Just dress warmer and get studded tires. Reason everyone drives everywhere is that we're a nation of fat, lazy, selfish whiners. "

" Many states and others are trending toward allowing cyclists to treat stop signs as yield signs and stop lights as stop signs because it just works better. Having the same laws for bicycles as automobiles makes about as much sense as having the same laws for cars and airplanes. Especially in heavy traffic, most cars do not have the patience for a bicycle that actually stops. (Yes, that SUV does make you look fat) "

" Hey RoZ, come to Wisconsin in January to promote your carfree lifestyle and see if you get anybody to show up. "
