Dr. Richard L. Carley
RIPON, Wis. Dr. Richard L. Carley, 81, of Ripon died peacefully at home surrounded by his family Friday, Sept. 19, 2008.
Dr. Richard Carley was born May 5, 1927, in Berlin, Wis., the son of Leon and Thelma Carley and Harry Luetke. He was educated in Berlin and Ripon and graduated from Ripon High School, attended Ripon College, and graduated from Marquette University Dental School in 1953. Dr. Rich practiced general dentistry in Ripon for 37 years. He was a member of OKU, an honorary dental fraternity, a life member of the Wisconsin and American Dental Association, past president of Ripon Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow, past president of the Ripon District School Board, and past president of the Ripon Police and Fire Commission. He served on the Heartland Chapter of Ducks Unlimited committee for many years and was a member of the NRA. He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a dedicated volunteer at Ripon Medical Center for many years. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was a member of the American Legion. He was an ardent sportsman and loved golfing, hunting, fishing and woodworking.
He married Arlene M. Splitt on Aug. 28, 1948, in Ripon who preceded him in death in 1993. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Shirley Jahnke; and a granddaughter, Danielle Carley.
He is survived by his wife, Naomi Kelm Carley, whom he married in 1994. He is also survived by four children, Jeff (Pat) Carley of Frederic, Wis., Chris Adams of St. Louis, Mo., Caryl (Scott) Doberstein of La Crosse, and Ted (Loraine) Carley of Ripon; seven grandchildren, Toby (Tammy) Carley, Philip and Joy (Carley) Hughes, Kylie, Kami and Kellan Doberstein, and Cassie and Erin Carley; five great-grandchildren, Molly and Maggie Carley, and Noah, Mason and Jackson Hughes; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by four stepchildren, Sherry (Bill) Glen of Apex, N.C., Douglas (Kathy) Kelm of Ripon, Kathy Meinke of Madison, and Richard (Karen) Kelm of Ripon; 12 stepgrandchildren, Dean Glen, Christine (James) Parker, Devin (Kelly) Brownlow, Damien (Michelle) Brownlow, David (Chris) Kelm, Dan (Erin) Kelm, Abe and Caleb Meinke, Samantha (Mike) Garvey, Ian (Sandra) Meinke and Aaron and Rebecca Kelm; and five stepgreat-grandchildren, Ty and Juliene Brownlow, Miles Brownlow, Owen Kelm and Zachary Kelm.
Visitation for Dr. Richard L. Carley will be held on Sunday, Sept. 21, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home, Ripon, and again on Monday, Sept. 22, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 222 Blossom St., Ripon.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Dr. Richard L. Carley will be held Monday, Sept. 22, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, with Father Robert Fictum officiating. Interment will be held in St. Patrick Cemetery, Ripon. A memorial has been established.

Sheryl J. Dempsey
LA FARGE Sheryl J. Dempsey, 42, of rural La Farge died peacefully Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua after many years with multiple sclerosis.
She was born in Sparta on March 14, 1966, to Fred and Janice (Christopherson) Erdman. She attended Sparta schools and graduated from Winona (Minn.) Beauty College in 1985. She worked for a short time at Curl Corner in Sparta.
Sheryl was a devoted and loving mother and a very caring person. For several years she sang for weddings. Over the years she enjoyed her perennial flower beds, making greeting cards and floral arrangements, and decorating for the holidays.
She is survived by her parents, Fred and Janice Erdman of Sparta; her son, Cody Endres of La Farge; maternal grandmother, Mary Christopherson; many aunts, uncles and cousins; her Amish neighbors; best friend, Nan “Sis” Heckart; and many relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Robert Christopherson; maternal great-grandparents, Clarence and Ruth Christopherson, Medion and Hilda Olson, and Verna Olson; and paternal grandparents, Fred and Margery Erdman.
Memorial services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Lanham-Miller Funeral Home, Sparta, with the Rev. David Carlson officiating. A luncheon will follow at the funeral home.

Carolyn A. Fox, 90, a resident of Bethany Riverside Care Center, La Crosse, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, at the care center.
She was born Sept. 28, 1917, in La Crosse to Nicholas and Anna (Rutz) Arenz.
Through the years, Carol was active in many organizations, including Girl Scouts, AARP, Christian Women’s Club, Housing Authority, White Cross and numerous service organizations. She had worked as an accountant for many years for WKBH-WKBT, Walt’s Restaurant and Gleason Accounting. In her later years, her favorite pastime was embroidering dish towels, tablecloths and baby quilts for all her grandchildren. She also loved sharing her Lake Neshonoc cottage with family and friends, creating lasting memories for all of us.
Carol is survived by four children, Douglas (Juanita) Fox of Belize, Central America, Donna (Ambrose) Gaul of Rome, Wis., Richard (Lorna) Fox of La Crosse and Diane (Dean) Uhls of Onalaska; 13 grandchildren, Douglas Fox, Lincoln Fox, Caroline Fox, Peggy Norris, Kathy Thurlow, Michael Gaul, Corrie Bacon, Steven Gaul, Jennifer Fox, Katie Lyman, Richard Fox, Chadburn Blomquist and Darin Blomquist; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Art, Albert and Bernie Arenz, and four sisters, Jean Bina, Sister Mary Claudine, Florence Ziesler and Kay Dunphy.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 22, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Bethany Evangelical. Free Church. Pastor Jimmy Bamberg will officiate. Genevieve Gen’ Hansen
TREMPEALEAU Genevieve “Gen” Hansen, 87, of Trempealeau passed away Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, at Hillview Nursing Home, La Crosse.
She was born June 20, 1921, in Caledonia Township, Trempealeau County, Wis., to Lester and Elizabeth (Macartney) Beardsley. She graduated from Trempealeau High School in 1940. She married Harold Hansen on June 18, 1940.
She riveted B-17 bombers during World War II, worked at Autolite in La Crosse, graduated from college at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 1966, taught school in Bangor and Tomah, retired, and later worked at Northern Engraving in Holmen. She and her husband also farmed during that time.
Survivors are a son, Earl “Bud” Hansen of Galesville and friend, Connie; a daughter, Janice Schmitt of Milwaukee and friend, Jay; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Edith Ekern and Jane Jansky, both of La Crosse; two brothers, Albert (Betty) Beardsley of McMinnville, Ore., and Robert Beardsley of Trempealeau; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Bette; three brothers; and four sisters.
The family would like to extend its appreciation to the staff at Hillview Nursing Home for the excellent care during Mother’s stay.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Trempealeau United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 515 McHugh Road, Holmen, and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church.
Raymond Carl Hanson
KENOSHA/ELKHORN, Wis. Raymond Carl Hanson, 64, of Kenosha died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, at United Hospital Kenosha Campus.
Raymond was born May 21, 1944, in La Crosse, the son of John and Mary (Polivoda) Hansen. He was raised on the family farm in Stoddard. He attended Grandville Rural School and La Crosse High School. On Oct. 4, 1975, Ray was united in marriage to Jeanette L. Tueting in Lake Geneva, Wis. Ray was known for his love of family and friends. He was also noted for a gift of gab, unusual and off-color sense of humor, and his love for baseball.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanette; three children, Melanie (Roland) Woodward of Fond du Lac, Wis., Matthew (Donna) Hanson of Kenosha, and Luke Hanson of Kenosha; son-in-law, Todd R. Killberg of La Crosse; five grandchildren, Laura Killberg and Derek, Annalese, Jacob and Karma Hanson; two sisters, Teresa (Mac) Miller of La Crosse and Frances Zellar of Beaver Dam, Wis.; two brothers, John Hansen of Black River Falls and Richard (Patricia) Hansen of La Crosse; and two sisters-in-law, Patricia Hansen of Burlington, Wis., and Phyllis Hansen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Rosalie Ann Hestetune; and two brothers, Eldon and David.
Private family services will be held Sunday at Bethany Lutheran Church of Kenosha, followed by graveside services at Hazel Ridge Cemetery in Elkhorn. William L. Luhman
NORFOLK, Va. William L. Luhman, 68, of the 8500 block of Wayland Street, Norfolk, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008, in DePaul Hospital, Norfolk.
A native of La Crosse, he was the son of the late Veronica and Ronald H. Luhman Sr. He retired from the United States Navy as chief petty officer after 32 years of service. He was a lifetime member of the VFW in Ocean View, Mugwamps and Handyman of the Banque, all in Virginia.
He is survived by his wife, Chris Luhman; seven children, Tina Luhman, Katy Schneider and husband David, Gail Verhaagan and husband Brian, Riley Gilbert and wife Rhonda, Jamie Tucker and husband Ed, Paula Silva and husband Robert and Crys Gilbert and wife Janelle; 21 grandchildren, John, Danny, Donny, Devon, Jaron, Lovan, Graydon, Samantha, Joshua, Leah, Rebekah, Rachel, Bobbie, William, Emily, Dean, Salathiel, Rylee, Joaquin, Ashley and Alexis, four great-grandchildren, Hailey, Christina, Mariah and Timothy; and a sister, Patricia Luhman.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Norfolk. The burial will follow in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, Va. Lyle H. Pavek
WHITEHALL Lyle H. Pavek, 92, Whitehall, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, at Tri-County Memorial Nursing Home.
He was born in Holt, Minn., on Sept. 15, 1916, a son of Hubert and Lydia (Reisburg) Pavek. Lyle graduated from Whitehall High School in 1935. As a young man, Lyle moved to Richland Center, Wis., to become the golf course manager and club house pro. Later he moved to International Falls, Minn., to work as a chemist/engineer at a paper company.
He married Dorothy Sakrison of Chimney Rock, Wis., on Sept. 14, 1940. The couple moved back to Wisconsin after inheriting the Chimney Rock general store from Dorothy’s father. The couple had three children, Karen, Ron and Greg Pavek.
In 1943, Lyle entered the United States Army. During World War II, Lyle participated in the Normandy invasion, the Battle of the Bulge and campaigns in northern France, Ardennes, the Rhineland and central Europe. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1945.
In 1955, Lyle and Dorothy moved to Whitehall after purchasing the Whitehall Lanes and starting the Golden Age nursing home. They later sold the nursing home after purchasing the Highway 53 Bar. Lyle worked at Wagner’s Lanes in Eau Claire, Wis., for many years after selling the bar and bowling alley in Whitehall. He retired to Lake Nancy in Minong, Wis., often traveling to Arizona for the winter. Dorothy passed away in 1980. Lyle was married to Enid Nehring from 1981 to 2005.
Lyle excelled in golf and bowling and was proud to have won dozens of area championships in both sports. Through the years he enjoyed fishing and hunting. His biggest enjoyment was seeing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Lyle moved to Tri-County Memorial nursing home in June 2006. He lived happily there until his death, on his 92nd birthday, Sept. 15, 2008.
Lyle was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, in 1980; his parents; and his brother, Hubert.
He is survived by his three children, Karen Pavek (Mario Gibbons) Halverson of Rio Rico, Ariz., Ron (Patti) Pavek of Onalaska, and Greg (Jackie) Pavek of Eau Claire. Lyle had six grandchildren, Chris (Kirsten) Halverson of Poynette, Wis., Matt Halverson of Phoenix, Joseph Pavek of Madison, Chad Pavek of Chicago, Nikki Pavek (Dave) Haworth of Madison, and Sara Pavek (Neil) Jurgella of Fort Collins, Colo. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren, who he adored, Alayna, Will and Olivia Halverson, Jack Jurgella and Avery Haworth.
Memorial services, which will be held in Whitehall, are pending.

Jeannette E. Steinke, 88, of La Crosse died Thursday Sept. 18, 2008, at Hillview Health Care Center, La Crosse. Funeral services will be announced by Seland Funeral Home, Coon Valley.
LaVern Joseph Sylla
WHITEHALL LaVern Joseph Sylla, 66, of rural Whitehall died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, in his home in the presence of family after a battle with cancer.
LaVern was born Jan. 27, 1942, in Arcadia to Frank and Magdeline (Slaby) Sylla. He married Ann Skroch on Aug. 17, 1963, in Independence.
LaVern and Ann resided on a farm in rural Whitehall where they raised hogs and beef cattle. They also grew tobacco and cucumbers for a number of years with LaVern’s family. After that, LaVern became a produce farmer with countless days and nights dreaming about strawberries, sweet corn and pumpkins.
LaVern was a hardworking man who prided himself on his crops and helping out neighboring farmers and friends. But when a good day was done, there was usually a party that followed. In his spare time, LaVern loved going to auctions, trap shoots, hunting and a good tractor pull with family and friends. LaVern also enjoyed collecting toys and real McCoys (John Deere tractors).
LaVern is survived by his wife, Ann; eight children, Shelly (Scott) Kulig of Whitehall, Barb (Rod) Duff of Mount Horeb, Wis., James (Jee Yeoun) Sylla of Sun Prairie, Wis., Bob (Stacey) Sylla of Bangor, Mike (Stacy) Sylla of Whitehall, Bill (significant other Angela Golisch) Sylla of Independence, Sue (Pat) Schorbahn of Independence and Krissy Sylla of Whitehall; 11 grandchildren; his mother, Magdeline Sylla of Arcadia; a sister, Betty Bechley of Alma, Wis.; and a brother, Ernie Sylla of Arcadia.
LaVern was preceded in death by his father, Frank.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, Sept. 22, at 2 p.m. in Saint John’s Catholic Church in Whitehall, with Father Michael Klos officiating.
Visitation will be Sunday, Sept. 21, from 4 to 8 p.m. in Jack Funeral Home in Whitehall, where a Christian prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. followed by a parish rosary. Friends may also call one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday.
