Aid Station returns for Oktoberfest opening

.
The multi-use Third Street Aid Station will return to downtown La Crosse for Oktoberfest’s opening weekend after its successful debut last year.

The aid station moves this year to a construction trailer in the Subway parking lot at Third and Pearl streets, the “epicenter” of downtown La Crosse, said organizer Marc Fortney.
The facility is needed to fill a gap for the tens of thousands of people expected to flood downtown this weekend, said La Crosse police chief Ed Kondracki.

“The mission of the station is to create a friendly environment where professionals can assist others in need and help provide a safe and uneventful weekend in our community,” he said.

Fest-goers can use the station for first aid provided

by members of Tri-State Ambulance and the La Crosse Fire Department, as a meeting spot and a place to find directions or a ride.

Returning this year are telephones and a bank of chargers for dead cell phones — the station’s biggest draw last year. A large message board also will be available. Police will be on hand for reportable incidents, and the fire department will use the station as a command post.

The effort is a collaboration between city and county businesses and leaders. All services have been donated at no cost to the taxpayer.

The 40-by-16-foot trailer was donated by TCI Construction, while Subway provided its parking lot. Buzzard Billy’s will supply the station’s electricity.

The facility will be open from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday, with an adjustable closing time based on demand.

The station will return to the same location next year, Fortney said.

Operation: River Watch is supplying additional volunteers from the city’s three universities, Kondracki said. stepping up efforts this weekend,

" To "Big Spender" No I do not misunderstand you. I have alot of understanding for you, medically they call it multiple personality disorder. Yesterday you thought you were in Scandanavia and were going to mold Badgercare into your plan, Today you are George Bush now you are not Chippy as usual. In America you can have your own health insurance company , its called your wallet. Go see a shrink and get some medication for your condition. Tommorrow you might wake up as Napoleon or Rasputin, Maybe George Washington who knows? "

" Attention old people who do not understand the internet: This is not a blog.

This is a thread that allows discussion (posts) pertaining to the Tribune articles. Please stop calling this a "blog". If you would like to have your own blog, they are free. Just surf on over to blogger.com and sign up. The Tribune certainly has the right to remove crazy stuff people post, or posts not about the article topic as they maintain this website and pay for the bandwidth.

I fully expect them to delete this post. "

" Just read your first post Big Spender... made me laugh. Prost! "

" First off, please make sure to thank the businesses offering their services free of charge for the aid station.

Second, when will people understand Obama and McCain are both members of the Council of Foreign Relations (CFR) just like the previous three presidents and many high ranking government officials... voting for either one is a vote for the CFR. The CFR is an exclusive club and being a member is not allowed for normal folks like us. If you truly care about your vote and understanding the issues perhaps you will take it upon yourself to research the CFR and understand their values, mission, and goals. "

" Please help us keep Obama out of the Oval Office. Search deep in your heart, you KNOW he is not the right choice. There is something bad about him that us regular folks can't quite put our finger on. No, he doesn't appear to be very patriotic. He did come on the scene very quickly. What is his "hidden" agenda? Can he be trusted? These are things we MUST address as voters in the Best, Most Democratic and free country in the World. Don't let this man be our President. "

" To wiz, re: "To" Big Spender" you are a pretty honest state worker. You have not been writing your blogs on state time. I notice it is always before work, lunchtime or after work."

Have you started your Octoberfest celebration early or something?

This is not Chip DeNure, nor am I a state worker--this is George W. Bush, no lie, cross my heart and hope to learn to read someday! I like to see how you hoi polloi are doing once in a while, so I cleverly disguise myself as a liberal America hater so you couldn't guess my true identity, until now. You can guess my true identity now because I just said I was George W. Bush. I discovered that fact myself. By the way, do you still misunderestimate me? "

" To" Big Spender" you are a pretty honest state worker. You have not been writing your blogs on state time. I notice it is always before work, lunchtime or after work. One question, are you using your own computer at lunchtime or is it the one taxpayers provided for you? I agree if your drinking, please stay out of the river and dont run over my body with your car. Be safe everyone and have fun! Dont smoke any Doobies,it is an illegal drug, but it will keep you safe. "

" Good point,BS or Chip I have seen the blogs go poof too, when something gets heavy. It is nice to have an aid station, for those that like to indulge in the by product of moldy mash and hops. Alter your minds, and carry a compass for the campus is east of downtown. Remember you aren't doing drugs, it is just alcohol. "

" notme is right: the Tribune memory-hole phenomenon seems to occur at suspicious times; when the topic was the UW-L Republican student Christian cross and the Winona flag-desecration story, there was much heated debate, then all the posts mysteriously went poof--I'll bet someone phoned Mial or his bosses at Lee Enterprises!

Kayo'd: yeah, it's private, but so are our Tribune subscription dollars!

In honor of kayo'd's "venue," here is a free movie:

" this is a nice addition to oktoberfest. its also nice that it is a free service...

as far this idea of censorship: even though this is a public blog, it is on a private network. they have the right to pull off from it any content that they would like to.

if you would really like to continue a debate that was happening on here you could always meet up with some people in a public venue for lively discussion....just a thought "

notme wrote on Sep 24, 2008 7:26 AM:

" ALL the 9-23 Articles, and the debate that went with them GONE FOR EVER.

My bet is the stories will be back up later today, as BS pointed out WITHOUT THE DEBATE.

The Tribune Editors (LEE Enterprises) do this when they get too much debate on the wrong stories, or the wrong kind of debate. They will claim it was some sort of error, but it is really CENSORSHIP, as they (Tribune) MUST control the thought process and/or the information.

Free exchange of ideas is DEAD in this town because it is controlled by a media monopoly.

God forbid somebody might read the blog and actually LEARN something. "

Big Spender wrote on Sep 24, 2008 5:49 AM:

" Not on the subject, but all the Trib stories yesterday evaporated from the site again (this is not the first time). All the blogs went poof with them. What's up with that? (In Firefox too, doesn't look like a hack.)

Anyway, Oktoberdrunks, do make use of this aid station, taxicabs, and your own two feet to keep you from smashing your car into mine or from walking into the river or into each other. "
