UW-L faculty, staff show support for large academic endeavor

.
The Sept. 8 University of Wisconsin-La Crosse campus newsletter had this advertisement: For sale 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager for $1,250. “All proceeds to go to the Centennial Hall campaign.”

Michael Slevin and Brenda Leahy, husband and wife and both UW-L staff members, placed the ad to sell their van to raise money for the new academic building, Centennial Hall.
Slevin, UW-L student service coordinator, and Leahy, a career adviser at UW-L, have a combined total of 26 years dedicated to the university.

When Chancellor Joe Gow and his wife, Betsy Valentine, pledged $30,000 to Centennial Hall, that fueled Slevin and Leahy’s decision to give what they could.

“To see someone relatively new to the campus community who already realizes what a great institution we have — that inspired us to give,” said Leahy.

Unfortunately, no one took the bait on the ad, and Leahy and Slevin decided to donate the van to Rawhide Boys Ranch.

“We will still donate to the campaign, but not as much as we had hoped to,” she said.

Leahy and Slevin wanted to give to the new building specifically because of the need for an up-to-date facility conducive to learning on campus, Leahy said. Centennial Hall will be the first new classroom facility on the UW-L campus since 1974.

About 37 percent of UW-L’s faculty and staff have given a total of about $625,000 to Centennial Campaign, which includes six major initiatives: the academic building, the annual fund, faculty awards and development, scholarships, the Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex and undergraduate research, said Al Trapp, vice president of the UW-L Foundation.

That campaign, which seeks to raise $40 million, will run though June 2012.

“A strong, shared commitment from UW-L faculty sends a clear message to prospective donors of the urgent need to support the Centennial Campaign, including the new academic building,” said Trapp.

A group that represents campus leaders and community members has teamed up to donate a total of $250,000 to the academic building portion of the campaign, according to Ron Rada, faculty emeritus, who worked with Carl Wimberly, vice chancellor emeritus, to raise those funds.

“The academic building is arguably one of the most important building projects in the lifetime of our campus,” Rada said. “We’ve really outgrown our space.”

Fundraising update

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Foundation has raised about $2.3 million toward the academic building, said Al Trapp, the foundation’s vice president. The foundation is still in the process of working with local banks to secure a letter of credit for $6 million by Nov. 30. The foundation must have $6 million in cash and pledges to get $38 million in state funding to pay for the $44 million building. UW-L plans to break ground on the building in spring 2009.

" Sorry Jared, but I am with common-cents of this one. Director of the UWL Foundation gets in a bind spending $1.20 and taking in $1.00. As if that is new? (Stadium) But in this scenario he took money that was given for specific purposes and used it to make up his shortage (documentable in Tribune expose). So Judith's answer instead of letting him go was to make a job for him. That is when Lacrosse received a 'Czar of Festivities'. The rest is history! "

" "Jared"
Good luck Jared. I graduated in 1987 and own my own business of 20 years. I see kids graduate from UWL and can't even do the basics in business, and need to be trained in the real world setting. The students who graduate from WWTC have better skills than UWL. I happen to play golf with a professor at UWL and he plays 6 days a week, and usually at 2:00pm. He is in the classroom for 2 hrs a day, and 6 hrs to prepare for a class he has taught for 20 years. "

" Way off topic here but, the tribune has banned comments on the tribune's pulitzer prize winning breaking news "sign story" This is article number 4 on a total non-story, way to beat a dead horse, tribune! "

" Maybe one should think they should not spend $700 billion for a bailout. Heck, let the system fail and start all over. These people that want to build tax payer fed buildings, and get HUGE tax payer fed salaries, can lose their jobs. Start over with reasonable pay for GOVERNMENT work. Get by with the buildings that are there and educate with the means that the TAX PAYER can afford.

It would be nice if I lived in a 6000 foot house with all the goodies. I don't, because I cannot afford it. The tax payer is tapped out. Bail out this, local school district wants that, more taken out on our income tax, social security is broke. When ALL of these bills are paid then think about a NEW building, until then get by with what you got, because the well has done dried up! "

" enuffalready- Not when you prepare the statements so well, with a pretty bow tied to it! But please do not have a memory. These people have collectively changed their stab at taxpayer pocketbooks many times recently. Starting with the stab where 3 million would go to minority enrollment, and twelve million for the building. Then don't forget the Regent Pres passed through shortly after and threw out the threat that Veterans help for tuition and such might not be there if not passed. Since then they have attempted many other tacs at us, and ruses. Don't believe me? Do a search and your own homework! This has been all over the map. "

" Re: common-cents

When did you go to school? I attend UWL now and every single one of my classes is taught by a professor, and their offices are always open for students to come get help. "

Anyone else see a problem with these two statements from the story?? "

" Posters reflect the anger in our area. The peripheral cost for police, etc could be countered by a room tax. But NO, a room tax was assessed to help pay for private viewing boxes at the stadium for the connected and elite. Then they gave across the board substantial raise to hierarchy at the UW System. While the average per capita income for Lacrosse is around $32k? At the same time we watch the UWL System led by 'On Too Many Boards' walk away from historical involvement of 'on campus' housing. While these same developers once related receive nonsensical 'spot rezoning', and 'satellite parking'? Gow is a good guy, but do not forget hidden in his little known employment package are things like $17k housing allowances. Which I truly believe have the affect of humbling him, or embarrassment. Good for Joe! "

" And this is a story, it's the bloated pay benefits and lack of actual teacher to student access. Professors are never in the classroom. I was taught by Associate professors at UWL or students taught class. Professors work on their own papers, that have been published over and over again in a different style.
The college system is very much broken and needs to be addressed soon.
Huge Ripoff to students. "

" Come on people forget the house payment, give, give, give, we need more drunks running the streets on the weekends. That and when you lose your house maybe joe will put you up in the fancy new student apartments. "

Big Spender wrote on Sep 25, 2008 1:14 AM:

" Once again, as usual, I've come up with the answer: sell the useless stadium to Harters--you can use it as landfill space. Now the U will have all the cash it needs to do what it ought to be doing in the first place: be focused on higher learning and not fun and games! "
