Owner of attacking pit bull pleads no contest; gets $159 fine

The owner of the pit bull cited for having a dog running at large after it jumped a fence and attacked two CenturyTel technicians pleaded no contest to the ticket Wednesday.

Catherine Bolling, 40, of 815 S. Seventh St., was found guilty in La Crosse Municipal Court and ordered to pay a $159 fine.

Bolling’s pit bull — “Big Boy” — was euthanized Aug. 28 after she surrendered the animal at the end of its 10-day state-mandated quarantine required after a dog bites a human.

The 2-year-old black and white pit bull jumped a thin wire fence behind the house about 9:15 a.m. Aug. 18 and made the unprovoked attacks on Dale Proksch and Carmon Jostad while they were working in the alley. Both men were treated for bite wounds at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center.

La Crosse County Health Department officials said they would have sought a judicial order to euthanize the dog had Bolling not surrendered him because of a public safety risk.
