Finding friends at Oktoberfest made easy

.
At Oktoberfest it’s OK to polka whenever you want, said Maria Scarpaci of Milwaukee. At Oktoberfest it’s socially acceptable to drink at 10 a.m., said Patrick Schindhelm of Milwaukee.

And, only at Oktoberfest, it makes perfect sense to hold a stick high in the air with a plastic crow fastened to the end, said Paul Przywojski of La Crosse.

Przywojski, “the ultimate event planner” among friends and family, thought up the “old crow on the stick” last year so that his buddies could find him during the crowded first days of the fest.

This year, he bought them all their own plastic crows on sticks from Fleet Farm, which they decorated and held up as they watched the tapping of the Golden Keg on Friday morning.

A crow on the stick also makes it much easier to get a beer, Przywojski said. He simply extends the long stick and taps the bartender on the shoulder with the beak of his feathered friend. With a few dollars taped to the bird, he avoids the crowd, he said.

“We’re sorry” is printed on the back of Paul and his wife’s shirts — “because it is so ridiculous,” said Kathy Przywojski.

“The crows are definitely original,” said Laura Cummings of Winona, Minn., who sat down at a picnic table with her husband before the flock of crows came in. “They told us, ‘You’re going to be happy you sat here ... if not, we’ll buy you a beer.’”

Oktoberfest is not so much about the drinking, but about being together, Kathy Przywojski said.

“It is all about having fun — that is really what it is,” her husband added.

" you know what i like? using my "creativity, inspiration, or intelligence" when i am drunk....THATS fun! for instance.....well i'm not gonna post that but, MAN! HAPPY OKTOBERFEST!

fun comes in all shapes and sizes and this town was founded on the seedier side of things in life, sorry all you ultra-conservatives. "

" They said for them, it's not about drinking, it's about getting together with family and friends. What's wrong with that message? I think it's a good one. "

" KulCity, I hope that one day, when you've grown up and become an adult, you will have realized that having "fun" does not in any way depend on getting drunk. Only LOSERS need to get drunk to enjoy life, as they have no creativity, inspiration, or intelligence. They just do as their fellow drunks do in order to be accepted socially. LOSERS..... "

" At 41, I still don't mind going out and having a couple beers on a Saturday night-just to kick back. I went to Oktoberfest when I first moved here (11 years ago), but I got tired of it really fast. When I went to walk home on Fest weekend, I got pushed and bumped around trying to navigate down 3rd Street-and the puke on the street and sidewalk really looks attractive. If people wanna go out and drink themselves stupid on Fest weekend, that's their choice-but it isn't for me. I saved myself a few bucks and stayed home Friday night, and I'll be doing the same thing tonight. "

" Kudos to Paladin & Darwin. I came out to my car today to find someone hurled all over it in my privately owned parking spot. Only for some drunk to out of the next house to say, don't bother cleaning it up we will do it again tonight. This city has some BIG problems.

It is a shame this city is proud of drinking at 10AM. And I can assure you the public intoxication law is not enforced in my neighborhood. "

" Both of you shut up and have a little fun in your lives!! Losers. "

Darwin wrote on Sep 27, 2008 10:54 AM:

" Well put, Paladin.

I'd like to publicly thank the drunks who parked their car in my reserved parking space in the ramp - I hope you enjoy the parking ticket. Wish the city could've been bothered to tow you out of the space I pay for both with my taxes and via a monthly fee. "

" It's not about drinking? Then why start the article with this? "At Oktoberfest its socially acceptable to drink at 10 a.m." Why not say in La Crosse it's socially acceptable to drink at 10:00 AM? This is why we need a Riverwatch, "a drunk bus" and a public intoxication law (that is ignored at this particular time of year). "
