Madeline ‘Maddy’ M. Crogan
Madeline M. Crogan, 92, of La Crosse died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, at Hillview Health Care Center,

La Crosse, surrounded by her family.

Maddy was born in Ettrick on June 2, 1916, to Pyrl and Rose (Quinn) Smith. She was a graduate of Central High School, class of 1934. She was united in marriage to Stewart Crogan on Sept. 1, 1937, at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church, Ettrick. She was employed at Quillin’s for 10 years.

Maddy is survived by five daughters, Mary (Julius) Zander of La Crosse, Bette (James) Werth of Onalaska, Patti Kline of Onalaska, Kathy (Brad) Rux of Janesville, Wis., and Margaret Crogan of La Crosse; two sons, Mike (Bonnie) Crogan of West Salem and John (Julie) Crogan of Holmen; 18 grandchildren, Jeff (Margaret) Zander, Mark (Kathy) Zander, Joanie (Jeff) Scovell, Michelle (Randy) Rank, Nicole (Spencer) Blakey, Brad Crogan, Bryan Crogan, Michael Werth, Susan (Todd) Williams, Jennifer (Dan) Hegge, Matthew Werth, Kari (George) Neuman, Kathy (Tim) Mohr, Todd Crogan and friend Leah Tauscher, Troy Crogan and fiancé Kim Stendalen, Jason Rux, Sarah Rux and Kelly Neve; 26 great-grandchildren, Jacob Zander, Becca Zander, Nicholas Zander, Ben Zander, Sam Zander, Gabe Zander, Zachary Scovell, Alyssa Scovell, Nicole Rank, Josh Rank, Isaiah Blakey, Savannah Blakey, Nicholas Williams, Kaitlin Williams,

Evan Hegge, Lauren Hegge, Madison Werth, Jamie Kline, Ryan Neuman, Jeremy Kline, Zachary Crogan, Nathaniel Crogan, Nickolas Crogan, baby boy Crogan expected in October, Schuyler Stendalen and Jesse Neve; and one great-great-granddaughter, Lainie Neve.

She is also survived by a sister, Sybil Beirne of Portage, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Betty Smith of Ettrick; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stewart, on Dec. 24, 1969; a son, James, March 23, 2003; and three brothers, Raymond “Bud,” Allan and Richard Smith.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 29, at Mary, Mother of the Church Parish at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 2006 Weston St., La Crosse. The Revs. Douglas Robertson and Edwin J. Thome will concelebrate with burial to be held in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, La Crosse. Family and friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass in the church on Monday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Mary, Mother of the Church Parish at St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

Mom, you will be forever missed and always in our hearts.

Eloise ‘Ellie’ (Hollie) Holm

Eloise “Ellie” (Hollie) Holm, 69, of La Crosse died Wednes-day, Sept. 24, 2008, at St. Joseph Nursing Home in La Crosse from complications of multiple sclerosis. She accepted her illness with grace and never complained.

She was born to Stanley and Sadie (Hagen) Hollie in Westby on Nov. 7, 1938. She was baptized and confirmed at Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church in Westby. She graduated from Westby High School in 1956. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Onalaska. Eloise married Herbert Coyne, which ended in divorce. She later married Harold Holm. She was employed by Behavioral Analysis in Irvington, N.Y. After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, she returned to Wisconsin in 1988 to be near her family. While able, she volunteered at Onalaska Care Center and got to be known as the “cookie lady” because she would bake and bring cookies for the residents. She enjoyed playing tennis and golf. She was an avid fan of the Packers and Tiger Woods. She also did beautiful needlepoint work, which she shared with her family.

Eloise is survived by her daughter, Christine Dalzell and her children of Baltimore; her son, Timothy Coyne and his daughter of Minneapolis; sisters, Arlene Pederson of Onalaska, and Evenelle Hansen and Mary (Lorren) Ramsett, both of Holmen; an uncle, Harold Hagen of Westby; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold Holm; her parents; brothers-in-law, Gerhard Hansen and Blaine Pederson; and nephew, Craig Hansen.

The family would like to thank Meadow Wood Assisted Living, (especially Don) and St. Joseph Nursing Home staff for their wonderful and compassionate care. There will be a committal and burial service in Mount Hope Cemetery, Hastings on Hudson in New York.

ELEVA, Wis. — Eileen E. Edison, 83, of Eleva died Friday, Sept. 26, 2008, at Crystal Lake Manor, Strum, Wis. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at East Bennett Valley Church, rural Eleva. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends and relatives may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Kjentvet-Smith Funeral Home, Eleva, and 10 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the church. Edison Funeral Home, Independence, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Robert Frei

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. — Robert Frei, 50, of Wisconsin Rapids died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, in the palliative care center of St. Joseph Hospital, Marshfield, Wis. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethel Baptist Church, Camp Douglas. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Mather, Wis. Relatives and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home, Tomah, and 10 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the church.

Marcella Kozlowski

ARCADIA — Marcella Kozlowski, 75, of Arcadia

died Friday, Sept. 26, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Health-care Medical Center, Arcadia. Wozney-Killian Funeral Home, Arcadia, is assisting the family.

Merlin D. Schnitzler

SPARTA — Merlin D. Schnitzler, 64, of Sparta died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lanham-Miller Funeral Home, Sparta. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home. SPARTA — Mildred L. Hansen, 83, of Sparta died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, at Rolling Hills Rehabilitation Center, Sparta.
