Sandra ‘Sandy’ G. Hakes
Sandra “Sandy” G. Hakes, 65, of La Crosse died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center. A remembrance memorial service will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Evangelical Church in Brownsville, Minn. Burial will be in Oak Creek, Wis. Memorials received will be donated to Sandy’s interests. Dickinson Family Funeral Home is assistting the family with arrangements.

Robert C. Longwell Jr.

GALESVILLE — Robert C. Longwell Jr., 58, of Galesville died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, at St. Marys Hospital in Roch-ester, Minn. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church with burial in Pine Cliff Cemetery, both in Galesville. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. to services Thurs-day, both at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Robert C. Longwell Jr. Memorial Fund A complete obituary will be provided for Wednesday’s Tribune by Dickinson Family Funeral Home of Holmen.

Martin ‘Marty’ James Heimer

LA CRESCENT, Minn. — Martin “Marty” James Heimer, 44, of La Crescent died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, at Fairview University Medical Center in Minneapolis.

He was born March 14, 1964, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Robert Francis and Shirley Ann (Hobbs) Heimer. He graduated from Waukon (Iowa) High School in 1982 and moved to Gillette, Wyo., where he worked as a well driller for Ruby Drilling Co. He married Dawn Hansmeier on June 30, 1984 in Waukon. Marty joined the U.S. Air Force on Oct. 10, 1986. He was stationed at Travis Air Force Base, Calif.; Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.; and Altus Air Force Base, Okla. He was discharged July 19, 2000. In January 2001, Marty began working at Benchmark Elect-ronics in Winona, Minn., as

a program manager. Marty enjoyed fishing, boating, golfing, working out and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Dawn; three children, Kate, Douglas (fianceé Tiffany) and Daniel; his parents, Robert and Shirley Heimer; a brother, Scott (Connie) Heimer; five sisters, Cheryl (Steve) Kiesau, Lynette Corkery, Susan (Dean) Bur-roughs, Mary (Joel) Anderson and Cathy (Jim) Gelo; grandparents, Agatha Heimer and Delbert Hobbs; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Marvin Heimer and Mary Hobbs.

Family and friends may call at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 21 N. Hill St., La Crescent, on Wednesday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A visitation for family and friends will also be held Wednesday, Oct. 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home, 202 Allamakee St, Waukon, Iowa. Funeral services will be Thurs-day, Oct. 2, at 11 a.m. at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church, rural Waukon,with the Rev. Ken Kimball officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Marie K. Danielson

SPARTA, Wis. — Marie K. Danielson, 83, of Sparta passed away Monday Sept. 29, 2008, at Rolling Hills Rehab Center in Sparta.

Marie was born March 17, 1925, to John and Louise (Bezpletz) Kotek, at the home in the town of Bangor. She married Bernhard Danielson on Jan. 24, 1946, and together they had 12 children.

She is survived by her children, John Danielson, Kathryn (Clinton) Culpitt and Mary (Steven) Evans, all of Sparta, William (Leatta) Danielson of Ennis, Mont., Margaret (Larry) Coleman of Sparta, Michael Danielson of Sparta, Charles (Jackie) Danielson of Wellford, S.C., and Paul Danielson, Ronald Danielson and Edward (Susan) Danielson, all of Sparta; 24 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Roman (Rita) Kotek, a sister, Agnes (Leo) Bouska, all of Bangor; two daughters-in-law, Jill Danielson and Patty Dannick, both of Sparta; along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernhard, who passed away in March 1983; two sons, Thomas and James Danielson; one grandson, Wyatt Danielson; and an infant brother, John Kotek.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Oct. 3, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sparta. Father James Leary O.F.M. Cap will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Family and friends are invited for visitation Thursday, Oct 2, from 5 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., at Torkelson Page-Smith Funeral Home in Sparta. Visitation will also be held Friday, Oct. 3, from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at St. Patrick’s Church.

Margery L. Duncan

VIROQUA — Margery L. Duncan, 91, of Viroqua died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, at Vernon Manor Nursing Home in Viroqua.

Margery was born Aug. 19, 1917, in Prince-ton, Ill., the daughter of Lewis and Ruth (Young-Mai) Averill. She married John M. Duncan on Dec. 2, 1939, in Davenport, Iowa. They farmed in the Viroqua area and in Sterling, Ill. Margery received her education in Kewanee, Ill., graduating from high school and nurse’s training. She was employed as an RN at CGH in Sterling for many years and also at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua. She was a member of Viroqua Church of Christ. Margery was an avid gardener and a friend to many.

She is survived by her son, William (Carolyn) Duncan; three grandchildren, Dan (Robin) Duncan, Ken (Marcy) Duncan and Tricia Terry, all of Sterling, Ill.; seven great-grandchildren, Jessica Duncan, Jakob Duncan, Richard Jackley and Laura Jaeckle, all of Sterling, Paul (Heidi) Jaeckle of Albany, N.Y., Susan (Rod) Miniel of Prophetstown, Ill., and Julie (Mike) Kirchoff of Dixon, Ill.; five great-great-grandchildren, Ian and Jackson Mager of Sterling, Olivia and Alexis Miniel of Prophetstown and Eli Kirchoff of Dixon; and several nieces and nephews. Margery also leaves behind special friends, Mary Chaput, Roger and Judy Munson, Richard Niemyjski, Jane and Steve Thurin and Joanne Dunnum.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; brother, Clifford Averill; and sister, Dorothy Griffin.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Viroqua Church of Christ. Nathan Prong, minister, will officiate, with burial at a later date in Pleasant View Ceme-tery, Kawanee, Ill. Friends may call Wednesday, Oct. 1, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Vosseteig Funeral Home, 708 S. Main St. (Hwy. 27 S.) in Westby. Friends may also call at the church Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m.

Alice A. McCallson

Alice A. McCallson, 91, of La Crosse passed away Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center.

She was born July 30, 1917, in High-land, Minn., to Adolf and Josie (Flatum) Davidson. On April 14, 1934, she married Elmer McCallson in Highland, Minn., and they would have celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary this spring. The family farmed in Amherst, Minn., before moving to La Crosse in 1942.

Alice was a long-time member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in La Crosse and was very active in the Dorcas Society as well as other church circles. She was involved in bake sales, quilting, funeral lunches — serving for many hours a week at the church.

In addition to her husband, Elmer, she is survived by two sons, Allen (Ingrid) McCallson of Onalaska and Dean (Darcy) McCallson of La Crosse; three grandchildren, Mark (Karen) McCallson, Matt McCallson and Lakiah McCallson; one great-grandson, Ryan McCall-son; two sisters, Joyce (Ellsford) Dahl of Waukesha, Wis., and Millie Carson of Preston, Minn.

She was preceded in death by three infant daughters, three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in

La Crosse, with the Rev. Mark Jolivette officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends and family may call at the church Thurs-day from 10 a.m. until time of services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.

Margaret ‘Petie’ Merman Holley

Margaret “Petie’ Merman Holley, 95, of La Crosse, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008.

She was born June 9, 1913, in La Crosse to Otto A. and Josephine (Thomason) Merman. Petie graduated from Central High School in 1930 and then attended La Crosse Teachers College and Voca-tional School before graduating from the College of Cosmetol-ogy in Minneapolis. She then lived in Gateau, Panama Canal Zone, before returning to La Crosse and marrying her high school boyfriend, H.K. “Bud” Holley Jr., on Sept. 3, 1935. Bud preceded Margaret in death on Feb. 21, 1964, after open heart surgery in Roch-ester, Minn. Margaret was also preceded in death by her daughter, Heather Holmberg, in April 1998. Margaret is survived by her son, H. King Holley III; and a granddaughter, Holley K. Holmberg.

Petie worked for 10 years at the Stollenwerk Studio at 211 Main St. in La Crosse until it was demolished for Harbor-view Plaza. She was busy these past few years recording the inventory of her father’s architectural contributions to the

La Crosse and Winona areas and beyond. Petie served as secretary on the YWCA Board for two years and was a member of the La Crosse Garden Club, serving as secretary for several years until the club merged with another club. She was active with the League of Women Voters and was a charter member and secretary of the Preservation Alliance of La Crosse. Mayor Zielke appointed Margaret to serve on the original Historic Sites Commission, where she served as secretary for several years before resigning to move to Greenwald Coulee in the town of Shelby. Margaret was also a charter member of the Coulee Kilts, and she was an active curler at the old La Crosse Curling Club. She was a lifelong member of First Congrega-tional Church in La Crosse, where she served in the Women’s Fellowship, Congo Auxiliary and the Guild V. She also belonged to the Gunder-sen Lutheran Auxiliary, the Antique Study Group and the Friday Noon Stitch & Bitch Group with Olga Schleiter, Jean Wulling, Dena Aldrich, Elaine Klund and Florence Rauk.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at Oak Grove Cemetery, 1407 La Crosse St., La Crosse. The Rev. Allan Townsend will officiate.

Memorials may be given to Gundersen Lutheran Founda-tion, YWCA, New Horizons, Coulee Region Humane Society or charity of choice.

James ‘Art’ A. Manske

MINDORO — James “Art” A. Manske, 52, of Mindoro died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at his home. Memorial services will be at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Mindoro Presbyterian Church. Burial with military rites will be in Farmington Cemetery. A gathering of friends and family will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Cindy’s Hall in Mindoro. A complete obituary will follow. SOLDIERS GROVE/GAYS MILLS — Mabel Fish, 74, of Soldiers Grove and formerly of Gays Mills died Monday, Sept. 29, 2008, at Sannes Skogdalen Nursing Home in Soldiers Grove. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Sime Funeral Home in Reads-town. Burial will be in Gays MIlls Cemetery. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to services Thursday at the funeral home.
