Our view: Don't miss the chance to participate

.
It’s a special day for the La Crosse area — a major-party candidate for president is coming to town to speak.

Of course, we also hope Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., uses his time here to listen.
Regardless of your party affiliation, the visit of a presidential candidate provides a special opportunity to participate. We’ve had the same message with candidates of both parties, and we would certainly urge participation if and when Sen. John McCain, the Republican nominee, comes to town.

The La Crosse area is getting a lot of practice hosting noteworthy politicians — especially during the past decade as Wisconsin has become a pivotal state.

Whether you’re a Democratic campaign worker who is being rewarded by Obama’s visit scheduled for today or whether you’re a Republican or independent, it’s valuable to take the opportunity to hear a candidate for yourself.

It’s an exciting civics lesson. And, it’s really history in the making, so we encourage everyone — no matter your political affiliation — to be a part of that history.

We hope both Obama and McCain are better able to articulate a key question that they both fumbled during Friday night’s debate.

Moderator Jim Lehrer was right on the mark when he asked the candidates which priorities would have to be trimmed or eliminated because of the pending financial bailout.

After all, to paraphrase the late Sen. Everett Dirksen of Illinois: A trillion here and a trillion there, and pretty soon you’re talking about real money.

That type of financial drain will clearly mean some of the priorities for either candidate will not be funded.

Clearly, the two candidates need to articulate the items that will fall off the wish list if the bailout is finally approved by Congress later this week.

Part of what fuels a lack of trust for politicians is the lack of candor about the things we need to hear, even those things we don’t want to hear.

We need to hear the reality of what the financial bailout will mean for Main Street, not just Wall Street. We need to know what government won’t be able to provide. We need to know what the priorities are n and how we as citizens can play a more meaningful role in setting those priorities.

That’s the type of candor we need in Washington. It’s also the sort of participatory democracy that continues to be vital for our future.

That’s why we urge you to participate today and throughout the campaign — and for the future
.

" We have no idea what WI Senators/Reps make, but we can guess it is $1700 per month, for serving only one term. Because they have made that information inaccessible just on 'themselves'. About a year ago these WI politicians got their hand caught in the inappropriate/covert post retirement health coverage cookie jar. And we have a WI DILHR office that can be used as an attack dog for political purposes. So when Obama, or McCain tell us that they "intend to deliver", it brings tears to my eyes as well. "

" That's good post down2512. Now answer my question, What do you do for a living? Also "this man intends to deliver" is what in fact scares the hell out of small businessmen like me. Look, we have 30 plus yellow pages of attorneys, all with injury/Comp as top billing, and partners with black marks on their faces from the tires of ambulances they are chasing. We have a Comp bureau where a soon to be retired whistleblower told me that there are 6 investigators, who do leave the office! We have a governor who has an idea to furnish health care for everyone is 'assess' a surcharge of 10% on small business payroll costs. "

" "driven to tears", I felt it watching, listening to Barrack Obama. The belief that this man intends to deliver is like nothing I've ever felt for a candidate. Every detail he touched will have affects here. Just wait until the trickle affects of shifting Wall St. activity hits our local commerce! The cycle of depressed economics this renegade administration are responsible for is not gonna stop with an immediate "bailout". Many small businesses, homeowners, and other individuals simply won't survive the devastating consequences. Electing Obama gives me peace of mind that our gov't will be making the incredibly hard decisions(and honestly acting on them)regarding spending, taxes, healthcare, education, and above all national security and social conscience to stop the fallout of the selfish, concieted politicians running things now. The present administration has done everything they could possibly do to leave the White House in ashes! "

" Brian,

you say the money spent on Iraq and missle defense is worthless, but I disagree. Defense spending is the one area that the Government needs to do. I don't agree that all of the defense spending is well spent ($400 hammers, etc.) but to say that all of our Governments past 8 years of spending on defense has been worthless is just wrong headed.

Something to take note of, Congress controls the purse strings, so if you don't like the spending, include all of the Congress men and women who approved it, in on your rant. "

" Or should I have termed it 'participating'? "

" Mind you Welch spends his time in sunny AZ where he Blogs from. Which is a State on the top of the list for our pending trillion dollar bailout. Now if we do not bail these bankers/financiers/investors out in Welch's area, those residents may have a bad time. In Wisconsin we are not near in 'peril'. If Welch tells you that he does not have a need for credit, fine. Then it seems almost certain the equity he has in property could, and probably will be greatly affected.
Thanks for contributing Mike! "

" Folks love to 'participate' -- it's supposed to be THEIR election and they invest SO MUCH yeah 'hope' in certain candidates and it may be that, true, they've invested too much in some. George W has obviously TERRIBLY disappointed his former enthusiasts -- now they 'hate' HIS plan, the plan that McCain-Palin is pushing -- Big Jawn assiduously on his phones this very day. The ONLY thing that truly unites the desperate Repubs like 'Phil O'Bates' below (and BELOW is indeed where HE belongs!) is hatred of Obama. EVERYTHING 'PO'B' writes is anti-Obama; he even forgets to mention the hapless Palin. He's in deep flop sweat ALL OVER this blog today, on nearly EVERY Obama story... "

" "Don't miss the chance to participate"? Don't you love it! Just go south a couple blocks, look toward the river. See those two buildings blocking the beautiful? You aprticipated in them. Prepare your check to bailout the greedy banker/investors/financiers in the sunny areas of once rapidly raising property values. You 'will be' participating with that as well? There is participation all around you. Hey, how is that 'econnomic stimulus' going at your house? "

" Participate in a rally to help elect a Senator to press the "Big Red Button" who doesn't even know that there are not 57 states in America. Remember, each state gets 2, so Obama doesn't even know how many Senators in office - think about that for a moment. Get real, Obama has been pushed on us as the best of the worst alternative for president. This man is not competent to lead a business, let alone our country. By the way, McCain isn't any better. Go Ron Paul !!! "

BrianGSmith wrote on Oct 1, 2008 9:04 AM:

" Dear "Phil O"...Where has this sudden concern for government spending been the past 7 years? $3 Trillion when Iraq is all said and done....for what? Useless missile defense and other Pentagon pet projects that are useless and designed for the 20th Century. Bush has spent more than all US Presidents COMBINED.....think about that Phil O.

Obama has detailed his cuts, savings and increases. I can only imagine you haven't had the time to go and read the details at his website or you can't be bothered with details. "

Big Spender wrote on Oct 1, 2008 7:25 AM:

" Participate? Get real! Both Obama and McCain serve the Great Global Corporate Oligarchy...this is just more Potemkin Village stuff (facades for Catherine the supposedly-Great).

You have no voice: see how Kind and Obama ignore the wishes of their constituents to vote for this "Socialism For The Uber-Rich Wall Street Corporate-Welfare Super-Scam!"

Do something here:

"Protest Wednesday October 1st"

http://bailoutmainstreet.com/

Write, call, protest! Get mad! NOW! "

Phil O'Bates wrote on Oct 1, 2008 7:23 AM:

" Jim asked what would each candidate do, and only McCain offered up freezing government spending except for Defense and veterans affairs. Obama just talked in a circle. So Obama is going to spend more money on things like national health care and early childhood education, PLUS support spending $700,000,000,000 (that $700 BILLION DOLLARS) to buy up bad loans created by groups like Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and ACORN (whom Barack Obama has direct ties with).

These guys in Washington think that they can dip from a bottomless barrel of money. What they forget is that money comes from US, the taxpayers. "
