Claire Foster
GALT, Calif. — Claire Foster, 52, of Galt died at her home of cancer on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008.
She was born Jan. 17, 1956, in Glasgow, Scotland, to John and Margaret Thompson. She moved to America in 1969 at 13 years of age. On May 28, 1983, she married Kevin Foster in Martinez, Calif. She worked at Hartford Insurance in Walnut Creek, Calif., and Bank of America in San Francisco. She enjoyed photography, genealogy and computers. They moved to Galt in 2000, and she enjoyed homeschooling their son, Michael, through high school graduation in 2008.
She is survived by her husband, Kevin Foster of Galt; son, Michael Foster of Galt; mother-in-law, Adele Foster of Chaseburg; sisters, Anne Falanga of Lincoln, R.I., Helen Thompson of Santa Clarita, Calif., Pearl Thompson of Maitland, Fla., and Jennifer White of Kearny, N.J.; brothers, Dennis “Scotty” (Sheila) Thompson of Pittsburg, Calif., and Robert (Patricia) Thompson of Bricktown, N.J.; stepbrother, Robin Das Gupta; sisters-in-law, Jackie Thompson of Glasgow, Paula Foster of Chaseburg and Sharon (Duane) Stafslien of Chaseburg; brothers-in-law, Richard Foster of La Crosse and Monte (Cathy) Foster of Coon Valley; nieces and nephews, Andy, Stephen and Jessica Thompson, Jane and Paul Falanga, Martin, Michele and Olivia Thompson, Lindsay White, Jenny Iovino, Tristan, Devon and Emma Thompson, Jamie, Lindsay and Zachary Stafslien, Chelsey, Daniel and Mycanzie Foster; great-nieces and
-nephews, Trinity, Stephen Jr. and Tyler Thompson, and Christine, Jerry, Mason and Taylor Iovino; and special friends, Arthur and Kathleen Fitzpatrick of Concord, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Michael Thompson of Scotland and Danny Thompson of New Jersey; and father-in-law, Donald Foster of Chaseburg.
The family wishes to thank David and Lynn Ross for prayers and friendship throughout Claire’s illness, the Kaiser Permanente Hospice staff for their wonderful care of Claire, especially Kathleen and nurse, Karen, and all the others who came to the home to assist in her care. We also thank Tim Dickerson, Betty Magnoli, Roy Rodgers, Kathy Cambra, Ron McKinney, Jim Martin, Betty and Roy at Mirant, and all of Kevin’s co-workers who have supported him during Claire’s illness.
A memorial service is scheduled today at 6 p.m. at New Hope Assembly of God Church, 200 New Hope Road, Galt, with Pastor David Ross officiating.

Alice E. Jonas
GALESVILLE — Alice E. Jonas, 91, of Galesville died Wednesday morning, Sept. 17, 2008, at Sauer Memorial Home, Winona, Minn.
Alice was born July 29, 1917, to William and Lizzie Lakey of Trempealeau. On April 6, 1940, she married George Jonas.
Survivors are her daughter, Carol (Roger) Lebakken; her grandchildren, Judith (Todd) Stucky, Eric (Debra) Lebakken, Tom (Rose) Bielefeldt and Richard (Michelle) Bielefeldt; and her great-grandchildren, Brittany, Jordan, Jacob and Sophie.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband, George; a son, Gerald; a daughter, Ruth (John) Bielefeldt; and three brothers, Lyle, Gerald and George.
Memorial services will be Oct. 11 at 11 a.m. in Zion Lutheran Church, Galesville, with the Rev. Chris Hallemeier officiating. Burial will be in Trempealeau Public Cemetery.

James ‘Jim’ John McDonnell
James “Jim” McDonnell, 95, of La Crosse passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Facility, La Crosse.
He was born on May 11, 1913, to William and Louise (Gilles) McDonnell. Jim married his “bride” Jean Larson on April 12, 1947, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
Jim was very proud to have been employed at Northern Engraving for 56 years as vice president of sales and retiring as vice president of design. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps as a photogramatrist. He enjoyed the Packers, Milwaukee Braves, bowling, drawing and sketching, and golfing as a member of the La Crosse Country Club for over 50 years. Jim graduated from Central High School in 1931. He was a proud and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Jim is survived by his daughters, Kathy Spelker of Onalaska and Jane (Mike) Galstad of Stoddard; sons, Jim (Mary) of Madison, Bill (Joan) of La Crosse, and Bob (Dee) of La Crosse; grandchildren, Rudy, Frank and Steve Spelker, Erin Colsch, Megan (Troy) Harcey, Marlie and Courtney McDonnell, Corey (Jason) Reinhardt, Matt (Annie) McDonnell, Melanie Daggett, Jeremiah Daggett and Dustin McDonnell; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his bride, Jean; parents; brother, Robert (Peggy); and son-in-law, Dave Spelker.
A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph the Workman Catheral, 530 Main St., La Crosse. The Rev. Michael Gorman will be the celebrant, with interment at Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse. A visitation will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Blaschke & Schneider Funeral Home is assisting the family.
The family would like to thank the care providers at Meadow Wood Assisted Living Center and Franciscan Skemp. Memorial are preferred to the activity program at Meadow Wood or Aquinas High School.
Sarah ‘Sally’ (Hyde) Pearse
Sarah “Sally” (Hyde) Pearse, 83, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.
She was born Nov. 26, 1924, to Nan and Sam Hyde II. Sally graduated from La Crosse Aquinas High School in 1942 and St. Catherine’s College, St. Paul, Minn., in 1947. She taught elementary school in Rushford Minn. On July 3, 1948, she married Richard Pearse Jr. Sally enjoyed entertaining and sharing her love with others. Christmas was her favorite time of year. She took great joy in finding that perfect gift and watching as it was opened. Her life was one of heartfelt giving.
Sally is survived by her eight children, Sally (Tom) Weingarten of Stevens Point, Wis.; Richard (Candace) Pearse III of La Crosse, Susie (Ken) Keller of Oregon, Wis., Muffy (Tom) Snyder of Rockford, Ill., Michael Pearse (Shirley Westphal) of Shawano, Wis., Bill (Kathy) Pearse of Holmen, Ann (Jay) Linhart of La Crosse, and Joe Pearse (Kim Myers) of Davenport, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, Gretchen (Jesse) Koch, Rebecca Weingarten, Laura Weingarten, Angela (Rich) Puent, Chris (Gina) Pearse, Richard Pearse IV, Patrick (Holly) O’Sullivan, Ed (Lauren Hodges) O’Sullivan, Dan O’Sullivan, Billy Pearse, Bryan Pearse, David Linhart and Tony Linhart; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick; her brothers, Sam and Dave Hyde; and her sister, Nancy Gerrard.
A visitation will be held at Blessed Sacrament Parish Center, 130 Losey Blvd. S., La Crosse, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today, with a rosary at 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4. Msgr. Bernard McGarty, a longtime friend, will officiate with interment to be in Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to La Crosse Aquinas Schools Foundation or Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

John A. Temple
KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. — John A. Temple, 90, of Kennett Square and formerly of Chicago and Wilmington, Del., died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at Kendal at Longwood Retirement Community in Kennett Square. He was the husband of the late Helene P. Temple, who died in 1995.
Born in Brainerd, Minn., he was the son of the late Olin Clare and Nettie Mae (Angel) Temple. He served during World War II in the Navy as an airborne reconnaissance photographer.
Art was his passion and his profession. He worked for the J. Walter Thompson Agency and Wardrop Murtaugh and Temple Inc. as a commercial artist and graphic designer. He lectured before the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and was on the faculty at Illinois Institute of Technology, where he taught graphic design. He served as a docent at the Delaware Art Museum.
Survivors include three sons, Peter Temple of Kennett Square, his wife Susan, and their children, Peter, Benjamin (Erika) and Emily; Dr. John-Peter Temple of La Crosse, his wife Joan, and their children Jack and Ann; and Nicholas Temple of Chandler, Ariz., and his children, Nick and Lindsay; and one great-grandson, Austen. He is also survived by a special friend, Ms. Kipp Stone of West Chester, Pa.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, in the auditorium at Kendal at Longwood Retirement Community, 1109 E. Baltimore Pike, Kennett Square.
