Martha Elizabeth Peek
ONALASKA — Martha Elizabeth Peek, 88, of Onalaska died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center hospice of bladder cancer.

She was born at home on Oct. 5, 1919, to William and Elizabeth (Passon) Andre. She was the fifth child of nine children and grew up in Independence. After high school, she went to college at the State Normal School of La Crosse, where she received a teaching degree. She was a teacher at Decorah Prairie, where she taught all eight grades to nine students. Later in life she was a substitute teacher and a cook at St. Patrick’s Catholic Grade School.

She was united in marriage to Joseph Peek on June 28, 1941, at SS. Peter and

Paul Catholic Church in Independence. After their family was started, Martha quit teaching and was a stay-at-home wife and mom. Joe and Martha lived at Pettibone Island after WWII and then moved to Colfax, Iowa, for a few years before moving to Onalaska in 1953. They were married for 44 years until Joe’s death in January 1986.

The mother of six children, she had the pleasure of seeing them grow and mature as individuals and citizens. She taught her children to believe in God, to respect others, appreciate what we have and share a smile with others. Martha had the best and most noble life. While she was here, she brought love, joy and comfort to all she touched.

Survivors include sons, Paul (Dixie) of Onalaska, Jim (Gerry) of Melbourne, Fla., and Tom (Carol) of Onalaska; and daughters, Mary Turner (Greg) of Red Wing, Minn., and Kathy McInerney (John) of Onalaska; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and sisters, Delphine Thompson of Waukesha, Wis., and Carol Bundy of Apache Junction, Ariz.

Martha was proceeded in death by her husband, Joe; her oldest son, John; her brother, William; and sisters, Mary, Lucy and Tracy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Onalaska. The Rev. Patrick Umberger will officiate. Burial will be in Onalaska City Cemetery. Friends may call at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of Onalaska on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m., where a rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m.

Florence T. Cline

Florence T. Cline, 93, longtime resident of La Crosse, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008.

She was a member of English Lutheran Church, where she served in various ministries, was a Sunday school teacher for many years and was active in women’s groups. Florence worked alongside her husband, Bob, in their locally owned jewelry store in downtown La Crosse. For 20 years, she was a communion assistant with Bethany Homes.

She was preceded in death by husband, Robert, and son, William. She leaves behind son, James (Jan); daughter the Rev. Jane Perkolup (Steve Ver Halen); and daughter-in-law, Liz Cline. She also is survived by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be conducted by the Rev. Duane Baardseth at Bethany on Cass Home, La Crosse, Tuesday, Oct. 7, with a visitation at 10 a.m. followed by services at 11 a.m. She will be buried in Elroy (Wis.) Cemetery. Her family and friends rejoice in a life well lived. Dickinson Family Funeral Home and Crematory, La Crosse, assisted the family with arrangements.

Sylvan J. Schultz

ARCADIA — Sylvan J. Schultz, 91, of Arcadia died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Medical Center, Arcadia. Wozney-Killian Funeral Home, Arcadia, is assisting the family.

Jens C. Petersen Jr.

HOLMEN — Jens C. Petersen Jr., 67, of Holmen passed away peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.

He was born July 13, 1941, in Arlington, S.D., to Jens C. and Helen (Bach) Petersen Sr. Jens served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force from 1959 until 1968. On Oct. 13,1962, he married Antoinette “Toni” BadWarrior at Alsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, S.D., and she preceded him in death Nov. 29, 2005.

Jens worked as a mechanic for Dairyland Power Coopera-tive for 35 years, retiring in 2003. He loved hunting, fishing and watching rodeos. Jens was a loving father and grandfather. He was a hard-working, loyal man with a great sense of humor.

Survivors include three daughters, Laurel (James) Gundlach of West Salem, Shannon BadWarrior Petersen of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., and Leann Petersen (Joey Nesseth) of Onalaska; five grandchildren, Jessica (Shawn) Sweeney, Danielle and Ava Petersen, Elijah LoneTree and Jaron Skifton; two great-grandchildren, Kaiden and Cameron Sweeney; two sisters, Diane (Jerry) Littleford of Porter, Texas, and Marilyn (Dick) Boardman of Holmen; one brother, Dennis Petersen of Watertown, S.D.; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Shelby Bashaw.

Funeral services will be Monday, Oct. 6, at 11 a.m. at Onalaska Church of Christ, 1415 Well St. The Rev. Gordon Clary will officiate. Burial will be in Green Mound Cemetery, with military honors by the Morris-Snuggerud American Legion Post 284 of Holmen and the U.S. Military Funeral Honors Program. Friends may call at Onalaska Church of Christ on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m., and on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, West Salem, is in charge of arrangements.

Robert J. Powers

Robert J. Powers, 87, of La Crosse died on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.

He was born in La Crosse on Dec. 28 1920, to Thomas and Effie (Layland) Powers. He married Lillian Leahy at St. James Catholic Church in La Crosse and she preceded him in death in 1984.

Robert had served his country with the United Stated Army during World War II as a communications specialist and was a very active member of Roy L. Vingers American Legion Post 52, Thomas Rooney VFW Post 1530 and Eagles Aerie 1254, all of La Crosse. Bob had been employed by Fowler and Hammer Construction Co. for over 20 years and was a proud member of Carpenters Union Local No. 1143 for over 50 years. Bob enjoyed playing golf, bowling, and playing cards with his friends.

He is survived by one daughter, M. Cathy Clemment of Baraboo, Wis.; two sons, Mike (Sue) Powers of Viroqua and John (Jean) Powers of Stoddard; six grandchildren, Sarah, Brian, Angie, Andrew, Ben and Joe; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Helene Powers of Onalaska.

In addition to his wife, Lillian, and his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Larry, Don, Wally and Ray; one sister, Betty; one grandson, Nicholas; and one son-in-law, Norman.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, at Cathedral Of St. Joseph the Workman. The Rev. Michael Gorman will officiate. Burial, with military rites by the American Legion, will be in Gate Of Heaven Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 9 a.m. until the time of services. Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is in charge of arrangements.

Alice ‘Elaine’ Justin

Alice “Elaine” Justin, 72, of La Crosse passed away peacefully on Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with breast cancer.

She was born on Sept. 7, 1936, at her Grandma and Grandpa Ross’ farm in Romance, Wis., to Martin Virgil and Vera (Ross) DeGarmo. She lived in Genoa, Alma and Stoddard and graduated from De Soto High School in 1954.

She married Donald Justin on Feb. 12, 1955, in St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Stoddard. After raising her family, Elaine worked at the Social Security Administration, retiring in 1992. Elaine enjoyed music, gardening, flowers, traveling, camping, polka dancing, knitting and playing cards. She was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Red Hat Society.

She is survived by her husband, Donald of 53 years; four children, David (Kim) of Connecticut, Dennis (Linda) of La Crosse, Tom (Karen) of Onalaska and Teresa (Todd) Nedegaard of Onalaska; seven grandchildren, Adam, Laura, Leah, Jamey and Zachary Justin, and Nathan and Kendra Nedegaard; two stepgrandchildren, Tom and Chuck; a sister, Ardis Lamprech of Onalaska; two brothers, Ronald (Betty) DeGarmo of Viroqua and Marlin DeGarmo and his special friend, Cindy, of Holmen; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Phyllis Starks; and two sisters-in-law, Vernis Haugland and Jean Kammel.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Oct. 6, at 11 a.m. at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor Jonathan Rimmert will officiate. Burial will be in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park, La Crosse. Friends may call at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. and at the church Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

Lois Delone Webber

LA CRESCENT, Minn. — Lois Delone Webber, 75, of La Crescent died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.

She was born July 8, 1933, in Rushford, Minn., to Melvin and Thora (Hatleli) Hoiseth. Lois graduated from Rushford High School in 1951. She married Robert L. Webber on Oct. 9, 1954, in Rushford Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death June 13, 2006.

Lois worked as secretary at Rushford Lutheran Church for many years, where she also taught Sunday school and was a member of the choir. She later joined Central Lutheran Church in Winona, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the church council. She was currently a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in La Crescent, where she was a member of the Lydia Circle. Lois also worked as a bookkeeper for her husband’s business, Kleinschmidt & Webber Engineering and Land Surveying, and was an officer with the Sons of Norway.

She is survived by a daughter, Ann (Matthew) Newell of Byron, Minn.; a son, Dale (Marcia) Webber of La Crescent; her mother, Thora Hoiseth of Rushford; four grandchildren, Mary, Krist-opher, Hallie and Delanie; and a brother-in-law, Gene (Donna) Webber of Chesterfield, Mo.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her father.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, La Crescent. Pastor Mike Woods will officiate. Burial will be in Rushford Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

Inez L. Behrens

ONALASKA — Inez L. Behrens, 83, of Onalaska passed away Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.

She was born Feb. 10, 1925, to Fred and Amelia (Von Haden) Woodliff in township of Wellington, Monroe County, Wis. She was baptized on March 1, 1925, by Pastor George Kolbs and confirmed on April 10, 1938, by Pastor L. A. Witte at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kendall, Wis.

Inez was united in marriage to Frederick “Junior” Behrens, Nov. 20, 1946, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tomah. They lived in Tomah until 1991 and then moved to Onalaska.

She is survived by her daughter, Rhonda Behrens of Onalaska; two nephews and one niece; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, and her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tomah. Pastor Donald Buch will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Tomah. Family and friends are invited for visitation on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Torkelson Funeral Home of Tomah is assisting the family with arrangements. BLACK RIVER FALLS — Grace A. Hall, 80, of Black River Falls died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at Black River Memorial Hospital, Black River Falls. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Ho-Chunk District One Community Center, Black River Falls. Burial will be in Decorah Cemetery, rural Black River Falls. Family and friends may call beginning at 4 p.m. Sunday at the center. Buswell Funeral Home of Black River Falls is assisting the family. Kathleen B. Brague

Kathleen B. Brague, 88, of La Crosse died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at St. Joseph Rehab Center, La Crosse. A Mass of Christian Burial is tentatively scheduled Wednesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, La Crosse. Family and friends may call at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson St., La Crosse, on Tuesday. A complete obituary will follow.
