Kathleen B. Brague
Kathleen B. Brague, 88, of La Crosse passed away Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at St. Joseph Rehab Center in La Crosse. She was born Sept. 2, 1920, in La Crosse to Roy and Mollie (Thill) Johnston. Kathleen graduated from Aquinas High School in 1938. On Oct. 14, 1939, Kathleen married Nathaniel M. Brague, and he preceded her in death on May 17, 1981.
Karthleen was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, a member of St. Ann’s Alter Society, Women of the Moose, and American Legion Auxiliary.
Kathleen is survived by three children, Richard (Barbara) Brague of Columbia, S.C., Kathleen (Michael) Nelesen of New Berlin, Wis., and Charleen (William) Berryman of Temecula, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard (Rita) Johnston of La Crosse; several nieces; and a “special daughter,” Kathy Lang.
In addition to her husband, Nathaniel, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Jerry Brague; a daughter-in-law, Joanne Brague; a brother, Harold “Tiny” Johnston; and a special friend, Fred “Fritz” Hegenbarth.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1333 S. 13th St., La Crosse. The Rev. Lawrence Berger will officiate, and burial will be in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park. Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson St., with a rosary to be recited at 6:30 p.m. A visitation will also be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday at the church.

Rev. Norbert Arthur Walter Gieschen
DE SOTO The Rev. Norbert Arthur Walter Gieschen, age 78, of De Soto died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at his home.
He was born Aug. 30, 1930, in Milwaukee, the son of the late Rev. Henry and Ruth (Hillemann) Gieschen. A month later he was received into God’s covenant of grace through Holy Baptism at Jersusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. Since his father accepted a call to serve as pastor of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fort Atkinson, Wis., Norbert attended the congregation’s elementary school. After due instruction in the blessed truths of his eternal salvation, he was confirmed in his Lutheran faith at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Fort Atkinson, on April 2, 1944. At the urging of his parents, he then entered Northwestern Preparatory School at Watertown, Wis., to prepare to enter the ministry.
He graduated from Northwestern College in 1952 with a bachelor of arts degree. The following fall he entered Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, Wis., and graduated with a divinity degree in 1955.
On June 11, 1955, Norbert was joined in holy wedlock to Caroline Lehrke at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Gibbon, Minn. God entrusted four children to their care, David, Nadine, Paul and Anene.
After his ordination into the ministry on July 10, 1955, the Rev. Gieschen served congregations in Colorado, Minnesota and Wisconsin. He served Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod at-large as a member of its Minnesota District Mission Board and as a Circuit Pastor of Fox River Valley Conference on Synod’s Northern Wisconsin District. On the 50th anniversary of his ordination, he retired from the active ministry. In retirement, Rev. Gieschen worked part time for Target Corp.
Rev. Gieschen is survived by his wife, Caroline; two sons, David of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., and Paul (Sarah) of Fond du lac, Wis.; two daughters, Nadine of Maple Lake, Minn., and Anene of Appleton, Wis.; a granddaughter, Danielle; two grandsons, Tory and Seth Peterson; a brother, Dan (Lorraine) of Camden, Mich.; and a sister, Ruth (Harley) Birsching of Sebewing, Mich.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Edgar.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in East Bloomfield. The Rev. Gerhard Schapekahm will officiate. Burial will be in East Bloomfield Cemetery. Friends may call from 11 a.m. Tuesday until the time of services. A memorial fund has been established for Luther High School, Onalaska and Fox Valley Lutheran.
Ardell E. Hegland
HOUSTON, Minn. Ardell E. Hegland, 89, of Houston passed peacefully from this life into eternal life on Oct. 3, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center surrounded by her family.
She was born to Herbert and Frieda (Goede) Lemke on May 21, 1919, in La Crescent, Minn. She was baptized and confirmed at South Ridge Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural La Crescent. She attended the Bush Valley Country School. On Aug. 14, 1940, she married John H. Hegland, also at Immanuel Lutheran Church. John and Ardell farmed together on the family farm in Storer Valley in rural Houston until John’s death on Feb. 2, 1995.
They had four children: Audrey Hegland of Houston, Paul (Charlene) Hegland of Hiawatha, Iowa, Susan (Arlin) Peterson and Duane (Eileen) Hegland of Houston; and a special nephew, Bryan (Deb) Hegland of Winona, whom they loved like a son. They had 13 grandchildren: Jeanette (John) Jacobson, John (Candi) Woxland, James (Tina) Woxland, Traci (David) Bunch, Brandon Hegland, Shauna (Andy) Rosenow, Brooke Hegland, Adam Peterson, Amy (Jackson) Hayek, Stephanie Peterson, Anna, Thomas and Emily Hegland. They also had 13 great-grandchildren: Matthew, Connie, Jack, Erik, Andy, Joseph, Samuel, Theo, Kayla, Andrew, Dane, Jonathon and Riley.
In addition to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Ardell is survived by two brothers, Lester (Lois) Lemke of Houston, and William Lemke of La Crosse; a sister-in-law, Janice Lemke of Caledonia, Minn.; special friends, Judy Anderson and Cora Wheaton of Houston; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and two brothers, Edgar and Donald Lemke.
Ardell loved gardening and was a member of Iris Garden Club. She was a member of Cross of Christ, WELCA and Valley View Nursing Home Auxiliary. She was known for her wonderful cooking and baking and was happiest when she was spending time with her family, cooking for them, laughing and playing pinochle. She had a wonderful sense of humor, even in the last hours of her life. Ardell had the unique and special gift of making each grandchild feel like her favorite.
Memorials can be given to John and Ardell Hegland Memorial Fund at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church or Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center Hospice Unit.
The family wishes to thank Houston Valley View Nursing Home and Heritage Court, Dr. David Momont, Gundersen Lutheran Hospice Unit Team, and Angie Happel for their wonderful and compassionate care of Mom.
Her last gift to her family was how to face death without fear through faith of God.
Funeral services are planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Lane Zaffke officiating. Burial will be in Stone Church Cemetery in Houston. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hoff Funeral Homes-Houston Chapel and also one hour prior to services at the church Tuesday.

Jack W. Ingram
WESTBY Jack W. Ingram, 91, of Westby and formerly of West Salem and La Crosse, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at Norseland Nursing Home, Westby.
He was born Jan. 5, 1917, in Townsend, Wis., to Abraham and Florence (Hamm) Ingram. On June 27, 1939, he married Eleanor Schneider at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Milwaukee, and she preceded him in death on March 20, 1972. Together they raised nine children, Michael, Margaret, Thomas, Patrick, Jacqueline, Jo, Kristine, Loretta and Judy. He farmed for many years near Harrisville, Wis., and later worked for Webster Lumber Co. for 20 years. On May 26, 1973, he married Grace Campbell at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Onalaska, and she preceded him in death on June 28, 2000.
Jack loved his flower and vegetable gardens and was known for growing giant tomatoes. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking, making cabinets, hutches, cribs, cradles, barns, animals and flowers.
In addition to his children, he is survived by four step-children, Tom, Pam, Sandy and Elaine; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; special friends, Betty and Frank; and his cat, Boots.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his two wives; a son, Patrick; a daughter, Loretta; six sisters; and five brothers.
In accordance to his wishes, he will be cremated, and no services are planned at this time. Burial of his cremated remains will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse. Woodruff-Jandt Funeral Home, La Crosse, is assisting the family with arrangements.

HONOLULU, Hawaii Frank Steven Jungbluth of Honolulu passed away Aug. 15, 2008. He was born Feb. 3, 1945, to Frank A. and Elaine Jungbluth in La Crosse.
Steve taught business at the University of Hawaii at Manoa for 20 years. He was a partner in the sales firm of Pacific Rim Sales. He also owned three retail stores for 10 years.
He is survived by his loving wife, Ginny; his daughter, Stephanie of Los Angeles; his son, Joel of Honolulu; his mother, Elaine of Iowa City, Iowa; his brothers, Jeff of Maple Grove, Minn., and Eric (Kristen) of Clarks Summit, Pa.; and his sisters, Linda Voyles of Naperville, Ill., and Nancy Gay of Dover, Pa.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 21 N. Hill St., La Crescent, Minn.

Sylvan John Schultz
ARCADIA Sylvan John Schultz, 91, of Arcadia died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Medical Center in Arcadia.
He was born July 21, 1917, in Mt. Angel, Ore., to Andrew and Martha (Feuling) Schultz. On Sept. 20, 1938, Sylvan married Martha Kupietz at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Arcadia. She died Jan. 1, 1997.
Sylvan was a veteran of the U.S. Army. In addition to working for Melvin Brandon Heating and Air Conditioning in Arcadia, Sylvan also was a foreman at Winona Millers in Winona, Minn., and farmed with his father. He also worked for Nick Jensen doing furnace work and for Oakey Arnold doing construction. His last job was working as a laborer at Arcadia Box Factory. Sylvan was a proud member of Tickfer-Erickson American Legion Post No. 17, Bautch-Kokott-Johnson VFW Post No. 10671, and Disabled American Veterans Association. He enjoyed gunsmithing, tinsmithing and carpentry.
He is survived by two daughters, Janice Elkins of Clarks Hill, S.C., and Shirley (Patrick) Gannon of Chicago, Ill.; seven sons, Dennis (Ruth), Gerald, Vernon and TJ, all of Arcadia, Sylvan A. “Tony” (Barbra) Schultz Jr. of Winona, Donny of Galesville and Robert (Denise) of Ettrick; 27 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Arlene (Herman) Eichman of Trempealeau.
Sylvan was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Martha; daughter-in-law, Cathy Schultz; great-grandson, Talan Schultz; three brothers, Andy, Harlan and Vernon; and six sisters, Evelyn, Adeline, Esther, Sally and twins in infancy.
A Mass of Christian Burial with military rites will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Parish, Arcadia, with Father Michael Klos officiating. Family burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Arcadia, at a later date.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wozney-Killian Funeral Home, where there will be a 7 p.m. rosary. They may also call from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Casket bearers will be Sylvan’s grandchildren.
