The charge filed Friday against 32-year-old Carl T. Sonneman Jr. carries a maximum penalty of nine months in prison. But because of prior convictions against him the penalty could be enhanced to two years.
According to the criminal complaint, a Kmart security guard on Thursday saw Sonneman loading $126 worth of items beneath him in the wheelchair. The items allegedly included hand tools, a cell-phone chip and a hunting knife.
Prosecutors say Sonneman fled but was arrested about 30 minutes later at a nearby grocery store.
Online court records didn't list an attorney for him Saturday.
