WASHINGTON — Wisconsin's onion crop is expected to be less than half its normal size this year because of spring and early summer flooding.

The National Agricultural Statistics Service says Wisconsin is expected to produce 286,000 hundredweight, or hundred pounds, of onions this year. That's 57 percent less than last year.
NASS says it expects Wisconsin onion farmers will harvest only 840 acres this year compared to 1,800 last year.

Agricultural statitician Audra Hubbell of the Madison NASS office says most Wisconsin onion farms are in the southern part of the state. Dozens of counties in that area suffered millions of dollars of damage in June flooding.

Nationally, the onion harvest is expected to be down 8 percent this year to nearly 73 million pounds.
