Two other young people are jailed in the killing, he said.
The body found in a shallow grave late last week was that of missing 31-year-old University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student Haroon Khan, but an autopsy could not determine how he died, Nehls said Monday.
Travis Zoellick, 20, of Watertown, kidnapped and killed Khan after arranging a meeting to buy his 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, the sheriff said.
``He valued property over life,'' the sheriff said. ``The intent was never to buy it.''
Khan was reported missing Wednesday in Milwaukee.
Acting on a tip Friday afternoon from two citizens, authorities in the Watertown area found Kahn's car in a storage unit in southern Dodge County. They removed Khan's body from a shallow grave about 220 yards away Saturday afternoon.
Zoellick fatally shot himself in the head with a pistol late Friday night in the bedroom of his home as authorities attempted to serve an arrest warrant, Nehls said.
One of the two other suspects in the killing appeared in Dodge County Circuit Court on Monday.
Zachary Zaborek, 19, of Watertown, was charged with harboring and aiding a felon. His bond was set at $25,000 cash.
A 21-year-old Delafield woman is expected to be charged Tuesday, the sheriff said.
