Pelicans flock to Lake Onalaska

.
ONALASKA — Bird watchers and outdoors photographers should rush to Onalaska this morning and early afternoon.

Hundreds of pelicans are dotting Lake Onalaska north of the Onalaska Dam as they feed and rest.
The scenic overlook and observation desk near the Big Sunfish along Hwy. 35 is one ideal vantage point. Another scenic overlook just north of the Big Sunfish also provides great viewing. Fisherman’s Road on the northeast end of French Island also is a good spot to view the growing number of pelicans on Lake Onalaska.

A good set of binoculars provides excellent viewing of at least two or three large flocks of pelicans. A camera with a telephoto lens provides excellent photo opportunities.

" Thanks Trib! I love the pelicans and I'd be down there right now if I didn't have to work. "

" Who cares about a bunch of stupid birds , I would rather see coverage of when The Second Republican GREAT DEPRESSION is starting "

" 100 to 125 just 20 feet off my dock this weekend. Simply wonderful now, as they are every year. Thanks for doing a simple and positive story. "

" These are beautiful birds. Living in the shadow of the more regal eagle, they are just as awesome in flight and quite breathtaking to watch. I see them on occasion in this area and find it difficult to just pass by; go take a look at the under-rated pelican! "

" As an avid non-hunter I didn't know about them. Perhaps it's nice to read something that doesn't involve someone getting stabbed or hit by a drunk driver, about the ecomony or the election?
Jeez... can't we have anything nice? "

" As an avid waterfowl hunter I get a chance to see these huge birds up close every time I go out on the lake. Binoculars does not do them justice.

Why write an article on this now? These birds are around EVERY fall and spring in huge numbers. Lake Onalaska isn't some new and amazing stopping point for these birds. They've been stopping here for a while now. "
