Authorities continue to investigate Irish Hill accident

.
TOWN OF SHELBY — Authorities still are investigating a head-on crash on Irish Hill that injured three people early Sunday.

A final report will be reviewed by the La Crosse County district attorney’s office to determine whether charges should be filed, according to the La Crosse County Sheriff’s Department.
Powell Littlejohn, 16, of La Crosse, was westbound on Hwy. 33 about 12:25 a.m. and passing in a no-passing zone when he collided with a vehicle driven by David Tallman, 43, of Sun Prairie, Wis., according to the sheriff’s department.

On Monday, Littlejohn was in critical condition, Tallman in fair condition and Gregory Manninger, 18, of La Crosse, a passenger in the Littlejohn vehicle, was in good condition at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center.

" and no one is encouraging anyone's bad behavior.. he knows what he did was wrong, and no one ever said it was a good idea.. just tell me this, all you people who seem to think you know what the deal is, have you gone to visit greg or powell?? do you know what they went through?? have you spoken to tracy or sue or troy?? i don't think so. don't claim you know how people are handling it if you don't. no one is giving him props for being an idiot, he knows what he did was wrong, end of story. and THANK YOU GUMBY FOR CLEARING THINGS UP.. "

" okay look.. i sit here almost every day and watch what powell goes through.. it's not fun.. every day seems to go worse than the day before. no one EVER said that tallman wasn't the victim here.. yes, powells stupidity wound him up in the hospital for internal injuries.. but at this point, even he was more worried about the boys and making sure they were alright, even he understood the perks of being a human.. yes, powell made a mistake, one of many in his life, but now, from that mistake he has suffered worse than any of them. god is doing is duties and giving him punishment... and now all of you idiots who think you know the story can just leave it be. because you don't know half. "

" AllyOpp22, you're absolutely right.

I'm sick and tired of people enabling bad behavior by kids and focusing on THEM. Littlejohn was completely in the wrong on this, and his friends' nonchalance about it is disgusting. Eleanor S., your comments have been gross - I know these people, and of course we hope Powell recovers. But I hope part of his punishment includes speaking in front of teenagers about the outcomes of his horsing around. For updates, go ahead and visit his mother on Facebook. "

" The one thing I noticed while reading through all of these comments was that everyone was talking about the 16 year old driver who caused the accident, yet no one really mentions David Tallman. (Go ahead and scroll back up to the article to see who he is, I'll wait....) He wasn't the one driving illegally or the one ignoring the no-passing zone or the one breaking the speed limit or the one driving recklessly. And yet he was the one who is injured, he is the one was in the hospital, he is the one with a totaled car and he is the one who has to worry about his recovery and getting his life back in order. Is that fair? HE is the true victim in this mess and HE is the one who needs the prayers and support. "

" Tracy wants to raise Powell to be a responsible adult - so I'm sure that she'd want him to take responsibility for his actions, like he'll have to do as an adult. Let's remember that he wasn't the only one injured, Eleanor. Thank god everyone is alive.... and that other young drivers learn from Powell's mistakes. "

1: powell was sober. so was his co-passenger
2: there was no "drug running" so think before you speek.
3: he is a human just like the rest of us. he was driving 25 minites past the time he was supposed to be.thats least then half as bad as a drunk driver killing a little kid thats playing in his own yard.
4: he made a bad disision. that almost caost him his life... please give hime a break

ALSO please give props to the sheriff that showed up before the 911 call was even ended.

ALSO give props to the people that stayed and helped the injured. they didnt stand around they HELPED!

what up? do either of you even know WHAT your talking about! traffic or drug trafficking? really? some kid is hurt because he made a poor choice....so lets all jump at conclusions? yea.... "

Nathan wrote on Oct 7, 2008 7:15 PM:

" Once again, alot of effort and resources being put forth on a possible traffice violation due to the easy revenue that will be collected by LAX. Perhaps Justice Sanctions will justify another pitiful job for this massive violation. Ohhh driving after a certain time, that should get him random testing and a diversion agreement that will bring $50.00 a month to LAX county. Ahem, how much time is LAX putting into the drug problem southside trash hanging around selling drugs? OOoooh that too much time and resources right?? What a joke this city is. "

Powell we wish you a speedy recovery! I am sure his injuries with always be a constant reminder of what happened! "

" I understand the young man was hurt but people young and old alike must take responsibility for their actions plain and simple. Where was I when everything changed? "

pmtrainsgal wrote on Oct 7, 2008 4:50 PM:

" While any accident is tragic, it is especially tragic when it could have been prevented/avoided. 16 year old drivers are not supposed to be on the roads at that hour, period. Had this young man followed the law he would not be lying in critical condition in a hospital. It just proves that young drivers are so inexperienced, make mistakes (passing in a "no pass" area) and people get hurt. I hope he recovers. It begs the question tho, who is responsible? the child, his parents, his co-passenger? The time of the accident is irrelevant, he could have been on that road at a "legal" time and still made the same error in judgement. "

Darwin wrote on Oct 7, 2008 2:51 PM:

" Eleanor, I understand that he's in rough shape. But don't write off the police as "rats" because they are investigating an accident.
Don't victims have a right to justice too? "

ellie1948 wrote on Oct 7, 2008 2:21 PM:

" DARWIN!!!! sorry to dissapoint you but no not related but everyone makes mistakes EVEN you i think he will suffer enough remembering what he has done, you need to show a little compassion once in a while not act like a big arse like you thinking you do no wrong. "

" 123096-
It may be easier for the victim to deal with insurance companies if the other driver was cited for the accident. I'm sure he wants to deal with this as soon as possible. I do feel really bad for this kid, and I hope he recovers fully. "

123096 wrote on Oct 7, 2008 12:42 PM:

" I think everyone should wait to see if this boy recovers before determining what he should be charged with. He has devasting injuries and is currently in a medically induced coma, on a ventilator, and his family is waiting to see if he can heal from the head trauma and be the same boy he always was. He is a very good kid who made a very serious mistake. I am praying for all involved. "

conscience? wrote on Oct 7, 2008 12:21 PM:

" Sounds right to me tribreader. Does anyone know if he was even supposed to be driving at that hour? I thought a law was passed that makes it illegal for a 16 year old to drive after a certain hour. "

tribreader1 wrote on Oct 7, 2008 12:04 PM:

" Why is this being investigated? It seems very straightforward. Littlejohn was passing in a no passing zone which is against the law. His breaking the law resulted in a car crash. End of story, right? "

Darwin wrote on Oct 7, 2008 9:06 AM:

" Ellie... so what's your point?
Lemme guess. Are you related to Littlejohn?

Why shouldn't the kid be held accountable for his actions? "

transplant wrote on Oct 7, 2008 7:47 AM:

" I hope everyone recovers from this tragic mishap.

To determine whether charges should be filed should be what charges should be filed. Littlejohn was passing in a no passing zone. What part of against the law don't you understand? "
