Arthur Art’ Van Aman
ONTARIO Arthur “Art” Van Aman, 84, of Ontario passed away peacefully on Sept. 29, 2008, at his home in Ontario.
Art was born on March 9, 1924, in Milwaukee to Nelson and Lydia (Hauser) Van Aman. After high school, Art served overseas in the Army as a corporal with the Combat Engineers. Upon his return from the service, he attended University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. While in La Crosse, he met and married Betty Ash. He graduated in 1949 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. They moved to Evanston, Ill., where Art worked for the Evanston YMCA and New Trier High School while completing a master’s degree at Northwestern University.
In 1955, they moved to Northbrook, and Art joined the faculty at Glenbrook North High School in 1957. He spent 30 years at GBN, where he taught physical education and coached swimming, diving, water polo and golf. He established the Glenbrook Guard, a student group to teach youth swimming lessons, and trained Red Cross Lifesavers as a volunteer for 35 years. He also certified high school students in SCUBA diving and introduced yoga into the curriculum. Art was active in the Illinois Swimming Coaches Associa-tion and received the John Newman “Hall of Fame Award” in 1975. He remained committed to the goals of the YMCA and helped establish the North Suburban Y as a board member and fundraiser.
His work at GBN brought him much joy and satisfaction, but he didn’t miss it after he retired! He and Betty moved to their “farm” in Ontario in 1990 and enjoyed sharing its peace and beauty with many friends over the years. He continued to garden and golf in Wisconsin in the summer and Sun City, Ariz., in the winter. He cared for Betty at their farm until she died of breast cancer in 2002.
On May 5, 2005, Art married Jane Seidl in Sun City. Art and Jane enjoyed traveling. They visited Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Banff, Alberta, as well as parks throughout the West. They spent last summer as summer citizens through Utah State University in Logan, Utah, learning about opera and current events and taking salsa dancing lessons.
Art is survived by his wife, Jane; his daughter, Julie (Gil) Hoel; two grandchildren, Jillian Hoel of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Timothy Hoel of Eau Claire, Wis.; along with many other dear friends who cherish his kind heart, his sense of humor and his generous spirit.
Art was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Betty; and one brother, William Van Aman, who died in the Pacific during World War II.
A memorial gathering to celebrate Art’s life will be held in Northbrook, Ill., at the Northbrook Historical Society Building, 1776 Walters St., on Oct. 22. The family will receive friends starting at 6 p.m. and a brief remembrance celebra-tion will be held at 7 p.m.
Art’s family has requested that memorials be given to The Salvation Army in his memory.
