Local girl died of overdose at music festival

.
DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — A West Salem teenager who died in late July at a Minnesota music festival overdosed on prescription drugs, authorities said Tuesday.

Toxicology results for Ashley Marie McCoy, 17, revealed she accidentally overdosed on oxycodone, a pain reliever she was prescribed after a recent surgery, and methadone, a synthetic narcotic used to treat heroin withdrawal, said Becker County (Minn.) Sheriff Tim Gordon.
No foul play is suspected in her death.

McCoy died July 25 in her sleep while attending the 10,000 Lakes Music Festival, a four-day event in a rural area of Detroit Lakes. She was found unconscious in her tent.

Investigators are looking into who supplied McCoy with the methadone, Gordon said. If located, that person would face drug charges and possible charges related to her death.

" There is no need to continue to talk about this situation. What happened, happened, and there is no need to continue to sit and analyze the situation. Obviously there is no going back and getting her back, many wish that would be an option(as do I), but it isn't. So for the sake of her family and friends, the negative comments need to stop. I really don't think that many people even think about the effect that the negative things they say on this public site really do mean to many people. I do miss Ashley, and her birthday was just this last week. RIP Babe! I cant wait to see you again! <3 "

" Hopefully this serves as a lesson to everyone and people stop being rediculous by accusing others or being angry at what they do not know and just accept the fact that this happens to some teenagers when experimenting (drugs OR even alochol) and it's absolutely terrible enough as it is so there is no need for negitive commentary or "I told you so's". That's disgusting. This girl deserves respect and the right people know exactly what happend and that's what matters. She and the others she was with clearly did not expect a death, and we're uneducated, like many other teens, about what happens when you mix these things, or do them at all. Tragedy is what this stays, and hope for others to stop doing it is how it goes. "

" Doctors and investigators have their jobs for a reason. In past cases from this festival, past unfornate cases as well, these things have been put out there and searched into carefully. As well as a lot of recent cases of overdoses in OxyC, which seem to be more and more.
It's very sad for others to blame people or say it was not accidental, because what do you know? She was experimenting (stupidly, yes. Opposing Chemicals, yes.) but just like every other teen, and many make it through but she didn't and hopefully friends of hers who are doing the same, learn that lesson.

I also know that the person she was with admitted that he was on the same thing, most likely they did all this at the same time, and from my point of view, he's lucky not to have lost his life either. "

" excuse me, but what does jumping off the bluff have to do with ODing? jumping= you KNOW whats GOING to happen. drugs= you KNOW what COULD happen. yes, i'm sure ashley was aware of the consequences because she was a very smart girl but how could you sit there and basically say she purposely OD'd? that is cruel and hurtful to those who knew her. "

" I for one find this article in very poor taste! It is no ones business how this young girl died. This article is just adding salt to the wound of losing a child at such a young age. Its time for the media to leave this family alone! "

" Truth is that this young woman may have passed away from taking more of a drug than she may have needed. Anyone who has any experience with teenagers know that if this girl did pass away because of improper use of oxycodone (or whatever it was), that is no different than what many (stress MANY) teenagers do. Teenagers make decisions like these all the time. What she did is no different that what many other teens do. Unfortunately, the outcome for her was fatal. No matter what, it was an ACCIDENT. Leave it be now. May her family find peace. "

" Oxycodone is easily available. If kids want it, they can get it. They don't need to get a prescription for it. I have kids her age, I have a daughter that has taken it, and I know first hand that her Doctor was careful not to give her too much and no refills because of the fact that it can be addicting and the street value. Doctors, at least the good ones are aware of this drug. "

" First of all, everyone needs to just drop this whole "I told you so" Nothing is going to bring this young girl back. Her family has gone through hell and back, and for people who didn't even know Ms McCoy, to say anything about her or her family, or what happened is just entirely morbid. Don't you people have anything better to do? Leave the family and Ms McCoy's memory alone. That goes for the media as well. "

" re:goldie, when used appropriately, oxycodone is very efficient for controlling chronic pain, especially damaged nerve pain. Don't blame the doctor if it had been taken as prescribed she would have been fine. If she felt good enough to go to a 4 day music festival and sleep in a tent, she probably didn't need the oxycodone anymore. Doctors say that people that really need the relief from pain don't get a high from oxycodone. The real problem with this drug is the people who abuse it. "

goldie wrote on Oct 8, 2008 7:55 AM:

" When are the doctors ever going to be help accountable? If they are looking into who supplied her with the methadone what about the dr. who gave her the perscribed her with the OXYCODONE? That is a dangerous, habit forming drug itself. The doctors need to be held accountable also. "

OnaRes wrote on Oct 8, 2008 7:37 AM:

" All those who were naysayers about this girl dying from an OD when this story first came to light, all I can say is told you so. Those who said this girl came from a good family and there was no way it could have been drugs had to be natural causes or foul play, guess you had better rethink your line of thought. "

Paladin wrote on Oct 8, 2008 6:13 AM:

" If, as the article said, it was the combination of methadone and oxy that killed her, and a crime may have been committed by supplying her with the methadone, AND she chose to take it...can this really be deemed an ACCIDENT? Isn't that almost like saying that deciding to jump off the bluff is an accident? "
