McCain to address economy in pitch to area voters

.
Republican presidential candidate John McCain arrived in La Crosse early Thursday evening after a day of campaigning in eastern Wisconsin.

The Arizona senator is expected to focus on his plans for economic relief during a rally this morning at the La Crosse Center, though in recent speeches he has raised questions about Democratic rival, Barack Obama.

Both candidates covet Wisconsin’s 10 electoral votes.

When McCain pulled out of Michigan last week, he moved his regional staff to Waukesha. He started his Thursday town hall meeting there by saying he must win the state.

Last week alone, the campaigns spent more than $2 million combined on advertising in Wisconsin, according to the University of Wisconsin Advertising Project.

McCain’s La Crosse visit comes just nine days after Obama’s and as recent polls have shown Obama leading among likely Wisconsin voters.

J.R. Ross, editor at WisPolitics.com, said McCain needs to win a traditionally Democratic state to insure against losing Republican-leaning states such as Colorado or Nevada.

Wisconsin’s population of conservative Democrats makes it a good target, he said.

Campaign spokeswoman Sarah Lenti said McCain will focus his address today on “his plan to bring economic relief to America and to help American families.”

University of Wisconsin-La Crosse political science professor Joe Heim expects McCain also will challenge his opponent’s experience and readiness to lead.

Ross agreed, saying, “He’s trying to plant seeds of doubt in people’s minds.”

McCain promised about 4,500 supporters in Waukesha on Thursday he would go after Obama in their final debate next week.

While Obama made only a brief reference to McCain during his speech in La Crosse last week, McCain has focused intensely on his Democratic rival.

In Albuquerque, N.M., on Sunday, McCain devoted almost his entire speech to questioning Obama’s record, positions and readiness to lead. That came a day after running mate Gov. Sarah Palin accused the Illinois senator of “palling around with terrorists.”

Obama’s campaign fired back with a 13-minute video documenting McCain’s links to banker Charles Keating, whose fraud led to the collapse of Lincoln Savings and a $3.4 billion taxpayer bailout in the late 1980s.

Though September polls of Wisconsin voters showed the candidates in a virtual tie, three separate polls released this week show Obama leading by 10 percentage points.

But the 10 percent of voters who are undecided could swing the state to his advantage, Heim said.

Ross said McCain must win them over to stop the slide toward Obama.

The last time Wisconsin voted Republican in a presidential election was 1984. But while Democrats have had the edge, it has been razor thin in the past two elections.

Counties along the Mississippi River have been Democratic strongholds in presidential races, but voters here do tend to lean Republican in local and state elections.

“McCain thinks his maverick streak will play well there,” Ross said.

And a visit to La Crosse generally guarantees exposure in Minnesota and Iowa, both swing states thought to be leaning toward Obama.

This is McCain’s second stop in La Crosse this year. He spoke here Feb. 15 while campaigning for the Republican party nomination.

McCain’s “Straight Talk Express” jet landed about 4:45 p.m. Thursday. The candidate and wife Cindy spoke briefly with supporters but not with the media before their motorcade made its way from the La Crosse airport to the Radisson hotel downtown.

This includes McCain and hordes of other public figures, from the present and past -- on both sides of the political fence -- who enacted programs that required citizens to chip in to support the health and infrastructure of our nation. He may not win, but he has proven he is trying to get above the mud-slinging that seems so common anymore in politics. Thank you Sen McCain for showing America how we should treat fellow Americans, even if we disagree with them! "

This bill started out 3 pages long and ended up over 400 pages in length. The ONLY reason this bill got passed is due to the pork that was added.

    BOTH parties are an embarrassment.

With the exception of Russ Feingold, everyone of us who post here should be ashamed of our

If you can't tell, I'm a little pi$$ed off over the bailout. I'm surprised, and disappointed, that more posters haven't expressed the same outrage.

Or maybe I should go out and buy a $400,000 house I cannot afford, with a interest only loan, and then whine that when the principle is due. Why should we bail-out morons?

There are a few hardworking people that ran into bad luck. But hey that what bankruptcy is for. Let the system work. Might be tough for awhile, but bailing out stupid people, will just make the situation worse in the long term. "

He is asking the federal government to INTERVENE to 'restructure' those ill made loans so that those buyers CAN pay. As a socialist myself I COMMEND the senator but I am perplexed because I've been told again and again that OBAMA IS the 'soshie,' the 'ultra liberal,' but HE OPPOSES this sort of 'bailout'! The President has broad constitutional power to take military action in response to the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. Congress has acknowledged this inherent executive power in both the War Powers Resolution and the Joint Resolution passed by Congress on September 14, 2001.

The President has constitutional power not only to retaliate against any person, organization, or State suspected of involvement in terrorist attacks on the United States, but also against foreign States suspected of harboring or supporting such organizations.

The President may deploy military force preemptively against terrorist organizations or the States that harbor or support them, whether or not they can be linked to the specific terrorist incidents of September 11. "
