Howard R. ‘Hubby’ Steenberg
WESTBY — Howard R. “Hubby” Steenberg, 80, of Westby died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.
He was born on Oct. 2, 1928, to Sverre and Thelma (Bergum) Steenberg. In 1947 he graduated from Westby High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On Jan. 24, 1953, he was united in marriage to Elaine Blihovde. She preceded him in death on May 30, 2006.
He worked as a buttermaker at the Westby Co-op Creamery for over 25 years and then worked at Norplex in La Crosse for several years prior to his retirement. He was a member of Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church and the Syverson-Funk American Legion Post 155. He had also been a member of the Snowflake Ski Club for over 50 years and had worked on the “chain gang” for Westby High School football games for 25 years. Hubby was an avid sports fan and served as an umpire for the American Legion baseball team, and he loved attending and watching the Westby football team, Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers.
He is survived by one son, Kevin Steenberg of Westby; two daughters, Julie (David) Koch of Minnetonka, Minn., and Jan Steenberg of Westby; three grandchildren, Mitchell and Natalie Koch and Dylan Steenberg; one sister, Ione (“Bud”) Hauser of Cashton; his brother-in-law, Harold Hagen of Westby; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ada Hagen and Lillian Hagen; and four brothers: Clifford, Milton, Kenneth and Roy.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m. at Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church with Pastor Dennis Hallemeier officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Coon Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Vosseteig Funeral Home, 708 S. Hwy. 14 in Westby. Leslie G. ‘Butch’ Heintz
LA CRESCENT, Minn. — Leslie G. “Butch” Heintz, 54, of La Crescent died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born on April 20, 1954, in La Crosse to Leslie C. and Carol (Harr) Heintz. He married Lisa Thesing on Oct. 21, 2006. Butch worked for 20-plus years at Tru Gas and at Ace Trucking for seven years.
Butch loved the outdoors and a good tractor pull. He would go fishing, “hunting” and ATV riding as often as possible. He and Lisa loved to travel as well as go camping. He was a member of the La Crescent Snowmobile Club, Westby Snowflake Ski and Gun Club and the Tri-County Trailblazers ATV Club.
He is survived by his wife and best friend, Lisa of La Crescent; one son, Kevin of La Crescent; one brother, Dale (Renee) Heintz of Viroqua; one sister, Julie (Rick) Haley of St. Louis; and his special buddy, his dog, Jax. Nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James Heintz.
Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in La Crescent. Pastor Mike Woods will officiate. Burial will take place at a later date. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 3 p.m. until the time of services. Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent is assisting the family.

BLACK RIVER FALLS/MELROSE — Honora Agnes Hawk, 72, of Black River Falls and formerly of Melrose and Galesville died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at Black River Memorial Hospital, Black River Falls. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls. Private family interment services will be Wednesday at Stone Church Cemetery, Houston, Minn. Bernice Ann Blanchard
ONALASKA — Bernice Ann Blanchard, 82, of Onalaska died Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center in La Crosse.
She was born July 26, 1926, in La Crosse to John and Martha (Feyen) Bezpaletz and graduated from Onalaska High School in 1944. In 1948 she married Louis Blanchard in La Crosse and he preceded her in death in 1994.
Bernice had worked at the Electric Auto Lite in La Crosse until the plant’s closing and then owned and operated Blanchard Clothing Store in downtown Onalaska until 1965.
Survivors include her son, Gary Blanchard of Onalaska; a daughter-in-law, Mary Ellen Volden Blanchard of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; a granddaughter, Krista (Brian) Timmermans of Wisconsin Rapids; a great-granddaughter, Autumn Timmermans of Wisconsin Rapids; three sisters, Mary (Bob) Weiske of La Crosse, Arlene (Francis) Walter of La Crescent, Minn., and Ruth Myer of La Crosse; a sister-in-law, Benita Olsen of La Crosse; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Glen Blanchard in 2001; and a sister, Rita Walter in 2003.
Private family services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, 907 Sand Lake Road, Onalaska, is assisting the family with arrangements.

NEILLSVILLE/ALMA CENTER, Wis. — Anna Michelle Millard, 32, and her husband, Norman Jay Millard, 53, of Neillsville and formerly of Alma Center died as the result of a semi-truck accident near Nodine, Minn.
