Crowd confident McCain will win

.
Paula Betlach prefaced each thought about Republican presidential candidate John McCain with respect.

“I respect him. I respect his military service. I respect his long record of not working just with his party,” she said. “I respect his support of decreasing corruption in government.”
Friday’s campaign rally in the La Crosse Center’s South Hall was Betlach’s second dose of McCain, who saw him when he held a town hall meeting here in February.

McCain promoted the negatives of pork barrel spending and the positives of his Homeownership Resurgence Plan during a 21-minute speech woven with jabs at his Democratic rival, Sen. Barack Obama.

But McCain backer and NRA enthusiast Norm Krause, 68, hoped the senator’s speech would go more for the jugular.

“I’d like to see him get more fight in the dog,” Krause said. “I want names and numbers.”

Laurie Rowley, 45, of Blue Mounds, Wis., said she trusts McCain to protect the nation, whereas, “Obama is like leaving a child home with a baby sitter that has no experience.”

McCain’s visit ignited a level of hostility absent from Obama’s stop in downtown La Crosse last week.

Theresa Carey, who said she came to the event as an independent, started yelling “Liar!” when McCain criticized Obama’s tax plan.

She was standing toward the back of the crowd of about 4,000, but for a few minutes, the attorney from Viroqua was the center of attention.

Her outburst was quickly drowned out with chants of “U-S-A!” before she was surrounded by campaign officials.

“I’ve been asked to leave,” Carey told the Tribune, saying she was told she’s not able to speak her mind, “even though it’s a public venue.”

The McCain campaign leased the facility, so it could decide who should — and shouldn’t — be there, said La Crosse police Capt. Gary Uting.

But before it could escalate, the speech ended, sending the audience outdoors, where a small group of protesters had assembled.

Delores Althoff of Bangor said the scuffle didn’t distract from McCain’s message.

“His honesty and integrity shined through. It couldn’t have been any better,” the 83-year-old said. “I liked the fact a man of his age has the stamina to fight for his country.”

McCain drew a rowdy applause in calling himself an “underdog” who would fool the pollsters and snag Wisconsin.

Andrea Ehrat said after the speech she, too, was convinced McCain could take the state’s 10 electoral votes.

“There was just a lot of energy, and that’s good,” said the 21-year-old Western Technical College student.

Ehrat’s sister-in-law, Anna Ehrat, said she has shifted her allegiance to McCain after supporting Gov. Mike Huckabee during the primaries.

She agrees with McCain’s anti-abortion stance and thinks “Obama is very socialist and wants to tax everything.”

Nancy Rhodes, 62, of Viroqua also knocked Obama, echoing McCain’s critique that his Democratic challenger evades answering questions.

Obama is not being “held to task,” Rhodes said. “McCain always answers.”

An undecided voter, Jacob Welti attended the rally as part of his effort to scope out both candidates.

“I thought it was good he talked about following through with the war,” Welti said of McCain’s vow that the country wouldn’t lose a war with him at the helm.

But any highs from the speech were quickly eclipsed by a chance to shake the candidate’s hand and score a photo with him as McCain stopped to thank supporters gathered on Jay Street.

“That was touching,” Welti said. “I’m shaking.”

Tribune reporters Autumn Grooms, Anne Jungen, Samantha Marcus and local news editor Scott Rada contributed to this report.

" AmericanPatroit: There is increasing evidence beyond youtube that is surfacing concerning McCain's POW days. His giving of military secrets are based on those who were in the same prison camps as McCain. While this isn't being carried by national media yet, Democrats aren't resorting to Swift Boat tactics that the GOP and Rove does whether truthful or not. Just because it's not being used, doesn't mean there is no truth to it. Your defense of McCain is only noted, but not much of anything else. I recall McCain saying we must judge the temperment of who is seeking this office. He must calm and show leadership, not anger and ignorance. As the lead grows, Obama will be president in January '09. Help is on the way for those who have suffered the last eight years, finally. "

" Does anyone else think it is PATHETIC how John McCain can't look Barack Obama in the eye because of all the lies and distortion his campaign is allowing? It's sad that a war hero has stooped to such a low, desperate place to win...and he's no Maverick. Maybe a Goose or Iceman, but no Maverick; unless you're talking about the Volleyball scene in Top Gun. Then he's a Maverick. "

" There will always be those who persist in parroting falsehoods. McCain is a hero. There are no credible allegations of him being anything but a hero. It there were they would have surfaced well before now.

Barack Obama does not have the grasp of our national security interests that John McCain has, nor would be be able to react with sound judgment in a crisis. Even Hillary was in a much better position to know how to react to a crisis situation, but because the press was in the tank for Obama many voters were awestuck by the incessant coverage given him.

The only choice this time around is McCain. He is the one with experience and a track record of reaching out to the other party. "

" The President's popularity rating is a LOT better than the Democratic Congress.I can just hear the comments here if McCain had the same associations as Obama.A totally one sided liberal government will be the beginning of the end for this country. Look at the posts here. There is no bipartisanship. Remember, the PEOPLE are supposed to elect officials to represent THEM. Politicians are supposed to work in the best interests of ALL Americans.
Until people of BOTH parties can work TOGETHER to straighten out the problems we have and the future problems we face, I doubt much will improve.
The mix of two parties is needed to keep some sort of balance. "

" AmericanPatriot and like such: McCain never stared down the enemy. He gave away military secrets to save himself. The singing canary is no hero and those that were actually there are slowly speaking out. Once news coverage catches on to this, McCain is finished in politics. The reason Democrats aren't firing away on this is because they aren't the Swift Boat types that Rove tactics use for dirty elections. But eventually the same guy who says we need someone with an even temperment is proving it's not McCain himself. You can vote foolishly for the lying McCain if you want, but I would rather vote for the FDR of this generation...Barack Obama. Afterall, I don't listen to Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity or the False News Network of Fox. Talk about being completely slanted as bumbling conseratives. I wish they would figure out that Reaganomics was a failure. "

By the way, your boy Bush's approval rating is sitting around 25% right now. Thanks for the social misery! "

" McCain is not only more experienced than Obama, but when it comes to staring down an enemy I want a veteran and war hero on my side. This is not a high school debate or a popularity contest, although you wouldn't know it by some of the childish postings here. Grow up people! Our decision this November has real consequences. Like it or not, McCain is the only one qualified to lead our country the next four years. "

" I find it remarkable that for twenty years McCain has been the "darling" republican of the left, the moderate who reaches across the so-called aisle...and yet now that it's time to pony up and vote for him, almost all of the dems have turned their backs on him with vitriol.

I'm not sure what is more scary...those who would vote for Obama not realizing he is a socialist, or those will vote for him knowing full well he is a socialist and hoping the country moves toward that goal.

MaCain isn't the world's greatest choice either, but at least he understands that America is NOT a socialist country...yet. "

Also, why is it that Barack Hussein Obama can have a 20 year relationship with a racist (Wright), a 10+ year relationship with an unrepentant domestic terrorist (Ayers), a long term relationship with a criminal (Rezko) and that can be ignored, BUT McCain can have close ties to the legally elected President of the United States and that is somehow bad?

I suspect that when you truthfully answer those two questions you will see that your enemy is the enemy of my enemy. Think about it. "
