Big hit on Rodgers wakes up Packers

.
SEATTLE — It looked painful, didn't it? Yet it was exactly what the Green Bay Packers needed Sunday.

Trailing the Seattle Seahawks by a touchdown midway through the second quarter, they'd managed three points and 86 yards of offense. The last time their quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, touched the ball, he fumbled it, taking a sack after holding the ball too long with a couple of receivers open downfield.
And now, Rodgers and his bad throwing shoulder were rolling right, and while he'd just pump-faked blitzing safety Deon Grant out of his you-know-what, trouble was closing in. Or more accurately, Seahawks defensive end Patrick Kerney, who drove his shoulder and helmet into Rodgers' chest and facemask just as he released the ball, which fell incomplete.

In the final analysis of the Packers' 27-17 victory over the Seahawks at Qwest Field, other plays - Rodgers' 1-yard upon-further-review touchdown sneak that tied the game, or his 45-yard picture-perfect touchdown pass to Greg Jennings that gave the Packers the lead, or the defense's three sacks - resulted in more tangible results.

But for a team that desperately needed to snap its three-game losing streak, no play served a greater purpose than Kerney's hit on the new leader of the Pack.

''I don't think that we need to get our quarterback whacked,'' Packers coach Mike McCarthy said, ''before we start playing better.''

Yet that's what happened. And it hurt so good.

''I feel like we were sleepwalking early on,'' said Rodgers, who finished the day an efficient 21 for 30 for 208 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions and a 111.5 rating. ''I think it was a wake-up call,(after) a very poor turnover by myself when they went down and scored. Instead of going, 'Here we go again,' I think the attitude was very positive on the sidelines. We were able to put together a score on the next drive and it huge for our team confidence-wise.''

From that moment on, the Packers owned the day. Rodgers, still playing in pain from the dislocated right shoulder he suffered at Tampa Bay Sept. 28, got off the turf and hit Donald Driver for a 19-yard gain two plays later on a critical third-and-7. That jump-started the drive, which ended with Rodgers' 1-yard sneak just before halftime, tying the game at 10-10.

And while the Packers' next two offensive possessions ended in punts, the struggling defense found its footing against the Matt Hasselbeck-less Seahawks offense.

''It just didn't seem like we had very many opportunities,'' said fill-in starter Charlie Frye, referring to the Packers' 37:26-22:34 advantage in time of possession. ''It felt like we were on the sidelines a lot.''

After the punts, Rodgers rainbowed his 45-yard TD to Jennings on a third-and-6 play to give Green Bay a 17-10 lead, the defense forced its fourth and fifth three-and-outs, and Rodgers converted three straight third-down situations with pinpoint passes en route to a 1-yard touchdown pass to John Kuhn to make it 24-10. Charles Woodson and Tramon Williams' interceptions sealed it from there.

''We needed this. There's no question,'' Woodson said. ''I feel like every game is a must-win game, but we've lost three in a row, and we needed a game like this to take a step back in the right direction. (McCarthy) has been on us for the last couple weeks about not playing with enough intensity, having no intensity on the sideline, not playing for a full four quarters. We've all been talking about it, but if you don't go out and do it, all the talk is just locker-room talk.''

Said Seattle coach Mike Holmgren, whose Seahawks (1-4) are off to their worst start since 2002: ''You know, we are not used to this. We are certainly not used to losing games at home, and we are not used to being in the posiiton we're in. We are not playing very good football.''

The Packers (3-3) aren't perfect, either, but they are back to .500 and tied for first place in the NFC North with Chicago (3-3) and Minnesota (3-3) after the Vikings' escape Sunday against last-place Detroit (0-5).

''We're 3-3. I'm not jumping,'' McCarthy said. ''I don't get into first-place, second-place thing right now. It's a little early for that. I'm more in tune with the path that our football team is on. Every team has things that happen to them and you need to find a way to overcome the negatives and continue to build on the positives.''

" slinger: the d line (besides the Favre thing) is one of the biggest reasons I dislike Thompson...I, among others, commented well before the start of training camp that we were concerned about Thommpson's philosophy on personnel. I give him credit: he can find some great overlooked players, but it's like a bad addiction with him that he doesn't know when to quit with the gambling. I see it as the reason he wants so many picks: the more lotto chances you have the better your odds of winning a little dough...but the odds are still stacked for you to lose...Ted's at best 50/50...at best. Go Pack Go...big Weekend...the top of the Division thins out one way or another...LETS STAY ON TOP...GO PACK GO!!! "

" rock: Stats aren't misleading as long as they are used and interpreted properly. I am simply using them to back up my observations. Let's take yesterdays rushing performance: it did eat clock, and it looked A LOT better than it has since week 1. However, it really, in comparison to last year was a very subpar performance, especially when you look at the per rush average. Running the ball at 2.7 yards per carry can only eat clock on 2 of your 3 opportunities for a first down...one dropped pass kills the drive AND the clock....it's a recipe for disaster against a better team...and THAT's why I am not that excited about the rushing performance...makin sense? "

" 2020...I know the Pack is very week at d-line. Justin Harrel...don't even like talking about him so I'll move on. I agree, no depth at all on the d-line and that is killing us. I also agree with the terrible pass interference call in the Lions-Vikings game. Without that call I think the Lions would've got thier first win. I don't understand why people think we need another tight end??? If you STOP the other team from scoring...then you don't have to score us much yourself. That is how the NYG won the super bowl last year...with defense!!!! "

" You rely your comments too much on stats 2020. Stats can sometimes be misleading and overrated. The Giants game? The reason he only avg'd so little is because McCarthy didn't give him the ball enough. You are making valid points, but the bottom line is the intangible effect Grant has on the game. The defense has to be aware that he has the ability to bust one wide open. Look at his stats now, much lower than when he first started. That's because he's become a threat, and it has opened up the pass game to supposedly "bail out the running game" as you like to say. "

" anybody think al harris (god bless him) might have a little trouble getting his job back when he's healthy? williams can flat out play! nobody's doing anything against him and he's got a int in all three games he's played. god if we could only get bigby back and some type of help with the d-line. maybe they should try poppinga on the end a little bit, he's almost as big as thompson (jeremy) and he's got a good motor, kinda like kampman. "

Packattack2020 wrote on Oct 13, 2008 12:44 PM:

" rock: I would buy that if not for this: Grant played significantly in 10 reg season games last year...and he averaged 6.7, 5.4, 3.1, 7.1, and 9.5 yard in the LAST 5 of the season...he was no longer unknown. In the playoffs, he averaged. He had 7.1 against the VAUNTED viking run D on opening day, but since then he hasn't broken 4.6. Tell me the last 5 teams last year DIDN'T target him. In the playoffs, there were no secrets, and Grant had 7.4 against the Seahawks and only 2.2 against the Giants...all in all, he was a target and STILL produced. This offense, save for that it's a step in the right direction, shouldn't be acting so excited about the run game yet...neither should coaches or fans. "

Rock wrote on Oct 13, 2008 12:23 PM:

" Last year Grant was an unknown. He had success, and now teams key on him as a threat. That is the key factor in his lighter production. He is not to the same caliber as LT or Marion Barber, but he is still effective. "

PackAttack2020 wrote on Oct 13, 2008 11:26 AM:

" rock: Here's what I expect...the Pack averaged 4.1 for the year last year...INCLUDING the first 8 weeks of the season...right now we are only averaging 3.7 per carry...and ranking 19th. Take Grant, for example, HIS average through all of '07 was 5.1...he is now at 3.4...yes, he has been hurt, but there are SO many cutbacks that HE is missing. The injury could be affecting his cutting, but I don't see him even attempting to plant that foot and make the cut...the yards he IS making are largely by squeezing through the pile. It seems ludicrous to me to hear that we are pleased with an average of under 4.0. Grant was at 2.7 for the game. I also expect Grant to average more than Rodgers. "

Rock wrote on Oct 13, 2008 10:54 AM:

" 2020 - the running game was very, very effective. What were you watching? It ate clock and had some promising runs, as you said. What do you expect? A 9 yard avg?!! Yes, the avg could be about 1-2 yards higher, but when you run the ball enough, and gain enough ground, which they did, it keeps the defense honest, and you can burn them with the pass. That is how football works! When you can break a couple runs per game, even better. "

seabiscuit wrote on Oct 13, 2008 10:26 AM:

" I agree that there were some horrible calls that went to the Vikings yesterday and gave them the win. I think the Lions should file a complaint about the officiating in that one-- seriously. I'm happy Green Bay won; that could have been a tough loss on the road. Next week will be a good test for the team-- a win could set the tone for the rest of the season. Go Packers! "

" Not related, but did anyone see that Matt Ryan was 6-6 on 3rd down conversions yesterday. Either that kid is the next superstar @ QB or the overrated Bears still suck, I'm going with the latter of the two. Go Pack "

PackAttack2020 wrote on Oct 13, 2008 10:01 AM:

" Tight End would be helpful...do we even have any right now? I don't seem to see them holding the ball...Gonzalez for say...our second round pick from the '08 draft? We have seen Rodgers proving he can stay on the field...could we afford to give up a ROOKIE QB? The Chiefs seem to be shaky at that position. D linemen are going to be REALLY tough to find...it is a prized position where durability is rare...I haven't seen ANY that might be worth going after, unless we can get a team that is OBVIOUSLY out of options (DETROIT) for the season looking to aquire a future star (Brohm...shhh, don't tell them he sucks). Bottom line is wherever we get a Dlineman, the team we get them from has got to already consider themselves out of it for '08. "

PackAttack2020 wrote on Oct 13, 2008 9:52 AM:

" slinger: here is an answer to your Friday question..."why do I blame TT, since HE isn't on the field?"...because neither are half of out players this year...he let a VERY reliable D lineman go with the idea that the few he was keeping would be healthy and able to handle the increased reps: that has been completely opposite. slinger, when making decisions, it is very helpful to look at past performance...Justin Harrel (often injured, plays little), Ryan Pickett (plays a little more than Harrel), Jenkins (often injured and productivity affected often due to injuries even though he has played through them). Thompson, when questioned, stated that we have great linebackers...THAT means we are conceding 3-4 yards before contact on every play...make sense to anyone else? "

Eddie wrote on Oct 13, 2008 9:46 AM:

" For whom should the Packers trade? Tony Gonzales? As great as he is, the tight end is not a highly needed commodity right now. Offense is not the Packers' main problem right now. The Packers need DEFENSE - especially tackles. Are there any decent linemen on the trading block? I haven't head of anyone yet. I would definitely trade for one. "

Mr. Bigglesworth wrote on Oct 13, 2008 9:46 AM:

" I would like to see TT try and get Tony Gonzalez, but realistically I don't think that will happen, the Chiefs are reportedly asking for a 2nd rounder as a starting point. Hey free..was mom getting a little boisterous during the Packer game down in the basement bar? At least you got a couple of free drinks from her. "

Eddie wrote on Oct 13, 2008 9:40 AM:

" The Good News: Packers win! They beat a team they should have beaten. Rodgers, Driver, Jennings, Woodson, Kampman all shine. The Bad News: Ryan Pickett may be gone for the year (triceps). The Good News: Indy's RB's are hurt; only Dominique Rhodes remains. The Bad News: Peyton Manning is back in the Zone. Next Sunday's gonna be a TOUGH game..... "

PackAttack2020 wrote on Oct 13, 2008 9:24 AM:

" rock: I only see one or two pieces of the ground game that I think were effective: it ate clock, and we had 1 or 2 promising runs. Otherwise, the average was still very ineffective. Our passing game is still bailing out our running game. Yes, we need to get our reps in with the run, but they need to become a decent enough threat to open our passing game up even more. rock, what do you see as positives in this? "

Rock wrote on Oct 13, 2008 8:54 AM:

" The reason the ground game was effective is because Grant got over 30 carries. McCarthy is always quick to abandon the run, and they struggle. Look what happens when they run the ball! Go Pack! "
