Harriet I. Svoboda
Harriet I. Svoboda, 97, of La Crosse passed away on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, at St. Joseph’s Rehabilitation Center.
Harriet was born Jan. 21, 1911, to Charles and Nellie (Amborn) Yeske in Melrose. Her family moved to Hixton in 1924. She worked in Black River Falls at the Freeman Hotel from 1929 until 1931. Harriet married Frank Svoboda on April 5, 1931, and they lived in Hixton for four years before moving to La Crosse in 1936. She worked at Modern Laundry in La Crosse for 14 years until her retirement. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, Frank.
Our mom and grandma will always be remembered for her sense of humor, big smile, kind spirit and good cooking. Her home was a warm place to gather with family and friends, and she was always there to lend a helping hand when we needed her. We will truly miss her.
She is survived by her beloved children, Donabel Yauchzee (Claire) of Fresno, Calif., and Donald (Lynette) Svoboda and Loretta Mooney, both of La Crosse; her son-in-law, Leslie Hewines, who lovingly cared for her; and her brother, Robert Yeske of Hixton.
She is also survived by her much loved grandchildren, Jeff Gonchoroff, Danny (LeAnn) Gonchoroff and Denise Jennings of Fresno, Danette Svoboda of La Crosse, Roshelle Easterday (Paul) of Galesville, Gary Svoboda (Linda) of Sparta, Lori Thesing (Mark) of La Crescent, Minn., Jay Hewines (Sue) of La Crosse, Tracy Sacia (Dale) of Holmen, and Randy Hewines of La Crosse. She is further survived by 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition she is survived by a special niece and nephew, Billy and Eunice.
Harriet was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; her parents; seven brothers, Merlin, Harley, James, Vilas, Maynard, Harold and Spencer Yeske; and four sisters, Mildred Nesseth, Ruth Sterling, Alice Sweet and Esther Yeske.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Asbury United Methodist Church, 1818 Redfield St., La Crosse. The Rev. Scott McMurray will officiate and entombment will be in Garden of Peace Mausoleum at Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery, rural La Crosse. Family and friends may call the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of services.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to Asbury Untied Methodist Church.

Leslie James Jordahl
WHITEHALL — Leslie James Jordahl, 70, of Whitehall died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.
Les was born Jan. 30, 1938, in Whitehall to Lawrence and Jennie (Estby) Jordahl. He married Susie J. Kaas on Aug. 27, 1966, in Whitehall.
Les graduated from Gale-Ettrick High School in 1956 and Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, in 1960 with a bachelor of arts degree in business administration. He received his master’s degree in social work from Waterloo Lutheran University in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, in 1970.
Les worked 2½ years as a social worker in Douglas County, Wis.; five years as a social worker in Trempealeau County, Wis., and then 13 years as a social work supervisor for Trempealealeau County. After his retirement from
the Trempealeau County Department of Social Services in 1993 he was employed for 14 years with the Eau Claire County (Wis.) Parks and Forest Department, where he was known as “Big Cat,” prior to his retirement in October 2006.
Les was a member of the WSSA, where he was very active at both the local and state level and served on many committees.
Les enjoyed traveling with his family, his bowling team, fishing trips and history trips with his friends.
Les served six years with the U.S. Army Reserve and was a member of Knudtson-Mattison American Legion Post 231 of Blair.
Leslie is survived by his wife, Susie; a son, Eric (Alysha) of Stacy, Minn.; a precious grandson, Brady Giese, who was born on Leslie and Susie’s 27th wedding anniversary Aug. 27, 1993; and his father, Ken Giese of Whitehall; a sister, Thelma Jordahl of Galesville; a sister, Linda (Gary) Kaurich of Osseo, Wis.; two very caring nephews, Jedediah Kaurich of Barnes, Wis., and Joshua (Jenny) Kaurich of Madison.
In addition to his parents, Les was preceded in death by a daughter, Juanita; and his brother- and sister-in-law, Lawrence and Eunice Kaas.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, with burial in Lincoln Cemetery, both in Whitehall. Pastor Thomas W. Smith will officiate. Military graveside services will be conducted by Hutchins-Stendahl American Legion Post 191. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Jack Funeral Home in Whitehall and also one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

ONALASKA — David Inglis, 71, of Onalaska died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. Raymond ‘Ray’ Ernest Urbick
ARCADIA — Raymond “Ray” Ernest Urbick, 95, of Arcadia died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at St. Michael’s Lutheran Home in Fountain City, Wis.
He was born July 6, 1913, in Minneapolis to Peter and Molly (Stahoski) Urbick. The family moved to Arcadia when Ray was 6 years old. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942, serving his country for 3½ years. Ray started farming in 1946 on his parents’ farm and then became the owner/operator of the farm in 1948, the same year he married Florence Erickson Toloken. During his farming career, Ray served as the town treasurer for four years and a town supervisor for four years. He also drove a school bus for 18 years. Ray, Florence and family farmed until 1970 when Ray and Florence retired to their home in Korpal Valley. In 1987, they moved to La Crosse, where they enjoyed helping their daughter in her apple and pear orchard.
Ray enjoyed woodworking and fishing in Prairie Lake and Six Lakes in Chetek, Wis., where he and his wife spent many summers. He also enjoyed gardening and had a great love for the outdoors wherever he was.
He is survived by his wife, Florence, of 60 years; his two daughters, Patricia Frechette of La Crosse and Carol (Ray) Mueller of Fountain City, Wis.; two stepchildren, Janet (Dick) Grace of Franklin, Wis., and Fred (Judy) Toloken of Eau Claire, Wis.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Ray is also survived by three sisters, Dorothy Servais of Arcadia, Marcella Baker of Indianapolis and Florence Hogan of Georgia; and one brother, Mark of Minneapolis.
Preceding Ray in death were his parents; three brothers, Bernard, George and Gerald; and three sisters, Gracey, who died in infancy, Evelyn Kubis and Lorraine Teckenbrock.
Funeral services will be at noon Thursday, Oct. 16, at Wozney-Killian Funeral Home in Arcadia, with Father Michael Klos officiating. Burial with military rites will be at St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Arcadia. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to noon Thursday at the funeral home.

Lindahl Luckasson
CASHTON — Lindahl Luckasson, 85, of Albuquerque, N.M., and formerly of Cashton passed away Friday, Aug. 15, 2008.
He was born June 11, 1923, to William and Olga (Bertling) Luckasson. He married Virginia Brudos on Oct. 2, 1948. Lindahl was a lifetime farmer and also hauled milk in the Cashton area. After retiring from farming in
the early 1980s, Lindahl and Virginia moved to Albuquerque. Lindahl was a loved family member, friend and neighbor.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Virginia; two children, Lynn (Nancy) Luckasson of Cashton and Ruth (Larry Davis) Luckasson of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Lance (Chantell) Luckasson of Anchorage, Alaska, Rebecca (Tucker) Gretebeck of Cashton, Lyndon (Kim) Luckasson of
La Crescent, Minn., Ashley (Joe) Gierczak of Cashton and Charles Ellis Luckasson of Denver; great-grandchildren, Brock, Bren and Hattie Luckasson of Anchorage, and Lana Gretebeck and Jace Gierczak of Cashton; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at Immanuel (Moen) Lutheran Church in rural Cashton. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at the church. Lunch will follow the service.

A memorial service for Dr. Clifton H. DeVoll, former University of Wisconsin-La Crosse basketball coach and associate dean of the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at First Presbyterian Church, 233 West Ave. S., La Crosse.
