" I forgot about this post. To reply slinger, I've played, I officiate, and most importantly, I've coached. Players do not lose their starting position due to injury. Period. Unless... unique cases such as Favre and Majik, Brady and Bledsoe, or if the injury will affect the players ability to play that position at the same level he was at prior to injury. This is not my opinion, and of course not a written rule, but a strong guideline coaches on all levels of football use. "

" Hey 2020,
I agree with the facts you pointed out. Though I don't exactly know exactly how much weight they carry into the decision...it is a slipper-slope and a decision you don't want to make on a regular basis or you could lose players' faith and devotion for the team. Regardless...it's not often you are faced with the dilemma because more times than not the team has/hopefully evaluated their talent correctly and have the right people in the starting positions. "

" slinger: I don't, in principal, completely disagree. What you need to be careful of with that philosophy is 2 things: first, the perception that it sends to the rest of the team that loyalty to them during their dedication and sacrifice is easily shifted; second, if you are basing that move on only a few performances and you wind up being wrong in the change, you may have lost the fire that veteran had to your cause. Anytime you make a change like that you open up some risks, and dedication and loyalty are still highly valued in football: in both directions, to the team and to the players. Players understand the heirarchy of EARNING that spot, and most are not comfortable with the idea that an injury for a week alone could lose that position that you have earned over months. "

" I wasn't sugggesting Harris should be replaced. My comment was a generalzation stating that any player (no one in particular) can/should lose their spot to injury if the person filling in is performing better than who he/they are replacing! I just don't buy the statement someone on here made a team owes a player their spot back because of their dedication or commitment. I don't care who the player is if the person stepping in is out performing the player he is filling in for...that spot is now his and he won it outright! Sometimes it takes an unfortunate occurance like an injury for someone else to get their chance and if they make the most of it good for them and give them the spot. Life isn't fair sometimes.... "

" slinger: How many receptions did T.O. have against the Packers? How many games does Harris have under his belt? How many does Williams have? I think that Harris' experience alone makes it worthwhile to give Harris his job back. If he underperforms, then Williams comes in...my opinion...just mine...Your example of Favre and Majkowski: not truly the same, as Wolf was going to pull that trigger at the earliest opportunity: Majkowski going down was his opportunity. I don't see anyone with the Packers anxious to replace Harris...yet. "

" I disagree on most of you on this blog about one thing...I think a guy can lose his job/spot to injury. Proven and assuming the person that filled the spot is assumingly better! Remember when "The Magic Man" got hurt and who stepped in and then took over his starting position??? I rest my case!!! Also I don't buy the reason to give a person thier job back to do the team owes it to them because of thier "dedication and commitment". There isn't a person on any team that shouldn't be posessing dedication and commitment or they shouldn't be on the team. Sorry...but this isn't just a sport but a business. The best man gets the spot regardless.... "

" I don't like Harris, but when he is healthy, the job is his. Thats the way it goes, you cannot lose your job due to injury, unless in extreme situations, such as pure dominance by the replacement, or injuries that will have a lasting effect on your play. Williams has played well, but not well enough to warrant a permanent change. "

" Al should comeback slowly. Not start, and then put in a down or two per series. Gezz the guy could of died with this type of injury, make sure he can play full speed and get a couple good hits before sitting anyone. I hear ya 2020 on the dedication, the guy is gritty that is for sure, but his long term health should be taken into consideration.
G_H can you come in here if the Pack gets whooped by the Colts. You not being in here when they lose, just gives the Bear and Vike fans ammo. The way this year is going, they don't need anymore, if you know what I mean! "

How come when the packers are on a 3 game skid you don't come on here to disrespect people. Now that they pulled out a win you are back. What gives?
Vikings lost to the Colts by 3. I would be willing to bet the pack gets pounded alot worse then that.
What's your take on that prediction? "
PackAttack2020 wrote on Oct 14, 2008 8:47 AM:
" ah...g_h...always on the attack...here's MY reasoning: the guy deserves to have his job back based on his dedication and commitment to the Packers. If he struggles when he comes back, then give Williams a shot. Williams has done well, but he has had his moments too. Harris brings a size advantage to the field with at least 2 inches over Williams, and that can be pivotal against the increasingly taller NFL receivers. g_h, I know you have trouble with this concept, but it's about respect, and the rest of the team will understand and appreciate the respect Harris will receive when he comes back. They will expect the same should they get hurt and return. "
