Harris should be back with team later this month

.
GREEN BAY — So what if Al Harris suffered what could have been a career-threatening (or even life-threatening) injury, missed a regular-season game for the first time in his 11-year NFL career, had to spend a week at home doing nothing but convalescing and cost himself his weekly roster bonus money?

It’s not as if absolutely nothing good has come from the lacerated spleen the Green Bay Packers’ Pro Bowl cornerback suffered against the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 21.
“I found a new restaurant in Green Bay, a really good spot — Urban Frog. Have you been there? It’s good. I’d go there every day,” Harris said Monday. “So it hasn’t been total loss.”

He almost sounded convincing. All kidding aside, though, there was good news for Harris Monday: According to coach Mike McCarthy, he should be back in action for the Nov. 2 game at Tennessee, after the team’s bye week.

McCarthy said Harris’ spleen was scanned Monday morning — a day after Harris missed his third consecutive game, the Packers’ 27-17 victory at Seattle — and that the tests showed “significant improvement.”

“So obviously we are moving in the right direction,” McCarthy said.

While Harris, who was on his way to Lambeau Field on Monday night to meet with the medical staff, would love to return to action Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts at Lambeau Field, McCarthy said it’s unlikely — although he didn’t dismiss the possibility.

“We’ll see what the other doctors’ opinions (are). That’s just one doctor’s opinion. We’ll send his results out and get back more information,” McCarthy said. “I think he will be hard-pressed to make it this week, but I think after the bye is realistic.”

Harris was injured when he collided with teammate A.J. Hawk during the Packers’ 27-16 loss to the Cowboys. Thought initially to be suffering from cramps, Harris found blood in his urine, which led to fears that the spleen had ruptured, which would have ended his season.

Instead, though Harris missed the Packers’ Sept. 28 game at Tampa Bay, snapping his streak of 175 straight games played (including playoffs), multiple doctors conferred and decided that Harris’ injury wasn’t severe enough to require surgery.

But it did require Harris to rest for seven days, something that didn’t sit well with a guy who’d asked doctors to simply remove his spleen immediately after the injury because he thought it would allow him to play.

“The first week, I couldn’t do anything. It was just rest. And I suck at that,” said Harris, who’d last sat out a game in 1997, when he was on the Buccaneers’ practice squad. “But I had to do it, so I did. I sat home and rested. I’m just thankful they didn’t have to take my spleen out or anything like that.”

Harris was cleared to do light workouts — small weights and cardio on the elliptical trainer — after that, which wasn’t enough for him, either. (Hence the restaurant search.)

“It’s been hard, not being able to prepare every week (for a game). You’re so used to preparing and used to doing one thing every day, my whole day, I’ve had to literally make up a different schedule to keep my days (tolerable),” Harris said. “Because I’ve been having the same schedule for so long: Go to practice, workout, go home, eat, maybe get another workout in, study and then go to sleep.”

Harris said he’s been impressed with the way nickelback Tramon Williams has played in his stead — he’s had an interception in each of his three starts in Harris’ place — but said his return would give the Packers’ defense a boost.

“I’m definitely anxious to get back out there. I think I can help,” Harris said, singling out the play of Williams and veteran cornerback Charles Woodson, who continues to play with a broken toe on his right foot. “The guys are doing a great job, but I’m anxious.”

Anxious, but not without concerns, Harris confessed.

“I’m still scared, right now. But the odds of it happening again are unlikely,” Harris said. “I may be wrong. But I’m going to give it a shot once the doctors clear me.”

" I forgot about this post. To reply slinger, I've played, I officiate, and most importantly, I've coached. Players do not lose their starting position due to injury. Period. Unless... unique cases such as Favre and Majik, Brady and Bledsoe, or if the injury will affect the players ability to play that position at the same level he was at prior to injury. This is not my opinion, and of course not a written rule, but a strong guideline coaches on all levels of football use. "

" works for me....wow....mark your calendar slinger....this is a monumental day as we are as close as we have ever been to an agreement on something...ha ha ha....I feel better how about you...ha ha ha....oh...we probably agree on this too....GO PACK GO!!! "

" Hey 2020,

I agree with the facts you pointed out. Though I don't exactly know exactly how much weight they carry into the decision...it is a slipper-slope and a decision you don't want to make on a regular basis or you could lose players' faith and devotion for the team. Regardless...it's not often you are faced with the dilemma because more times than not the team has/hopefully evaluated their talent correctly and have the right people in the starting positions. "

PackAttack2020 wrote on Oct 15, 2008 7:15 AM:

" slinger: I don't, in principal, completely disagree. What you need to be careful of with that philosophy is 2 things: first, the perception that it sends to the rest of the team that loyalty to them during their dedication and sacrifice is easily shifted; second, if you are basing that move on only a few performances and you wind up being wrong in the change, you may have lost the fire that veteran had to your cause. Anytime you make a change like that you open up some risks, and dedication and loyalty are still highly valued in football: in both directions, to the team and to the players. Players understand the heirarchy of EARNING that spot, and most are not comfortable with the idea that an injury for a week alone could lose that position that you have earned over months. "

" I wasn't sugggesting Harris should be replaced. My comment was a generalzation stating that any player (no one in particular) can/should lose their spot to injury if the person filling in is performing better than who he/they are replacing! I just don't buy the statement someone on here made a team owes a player their spot back because of their dedication or commitment. I don't care who the player is if the person stepping in is out performing the player he is filling in for...that spot is now his and he won it outright! Sometimes it takes an unfortunate occurance like an injury for someone else to get their chance and if they make the most of it good for them and give them the spot. Life isn't fair sometimes.... "

" slinger: How many receptions did T.O. have against the Packers? How many games does Harris have under his belt? How many does Williams have? I think that Harris' experience alone makes it worthwhile to give Harris his job back. If he underperforms, then Williams comes in...my opinion...just mine...Your example of Favre and Majkowski: not truly the same, as Wolf was going to pull that trigger at the earliest opportunity: Majkowski going down was his opportunity. I don't see anyone with the Packers anxious to replace Harris...yet. "

slinger1919 wrote on Oct 14, 2008 5:48 PM:

" I disagree on most of you on this blog about one thing...I think a guy can lose his job/spot to injury. Proven and assuming the person that filled the spot is assumingly better! Remember when "The Magic Man" got hurt and who stepped in and then took over his starting position??? I rest my case!!! Also I don't buy the reason to give a person thier job back to do the team owes it to them because of thier "dedication and commitment". There isn't a person on any team that shouldn't be posessing dedication and commitment or they shouldn't be on the team. Sorry...but this isn't just a sport but a business. The best man gets the spot regardless.... "

" I don't like Harris, but when he is healthy, the job is his. Thats the way it goes, you cannot lose your job due to injury, unless in extreme situations, such as pure dominance by the replacement, or injuries that will have a lasting effect on your play. Williams has played well, but not well enough to warrant a permanent change. "

" Al should comeback slowly. Not start, and then put in a down or two per series. Gezz the guy could of died with this type of injury, make sure he can play full speed and get a couple good hits before sitting anyone. I hear ya 2020 on the dedication, the guy is gritty that is for sure, but his long term health should be taken into consideration.

G_H can you come in here if the Pack gets whooped by the Colts. You not being in here when they lose, just gives the Bear and Vike fans ammo. The way this year is going, they don't need anymore, if you know what I mean! "

" g_h: Awfully arrogant...you have your share of errors on here. You running for office somewhere? You avoid the quesiton and sling mud...poor excuse for your avoidance g_h. "

" felchingpro, it's painfully clear you don't know the difference between then and than. lord knows i've tried to be nice and explain it to you, but, it's obviously too much for you to comprehend. now it seems as though i'm going to need to explain the difference between predictions and wishful thinking. better yet, have free speech explain that one to you. good day. "

fishingpro wrote on Oct 14, 2008 10:01 AM:

" Hey God,
How come when the packers are on a 3 game skid you don't come on here to disrespect people. Now that they pulled out a win you are back. What gives?

Vikings lost to the Colts by 3. I would be willing to bet the pack gets pounded alot worse then that.

What's your take on that prediction? "

PackAttack2020 wrote on Oct 14, 2008 8:47 AM:

" ah...g_h...always on the attack...here's MY reasoning: the guy deserves to have his job back based on his dedication and commitment to the Packers. If he struggles when he comes back, then give Williams a shot. Williams has done well, but he has had his moments too. Harris brings a size advantage to the field with at least 2 inches over Williams, and that can be pivotal against the increasingly taller NFL receivers. g_h, I know you have trouble with this concept, but it's about respect, and the rest of the team will understand and appreciate the respect Harris will receive when he comes back. They will expect the same should they get hurt and return. "

GOD_HIMSELF wrote on Oct 14, 2008 8:02 AM:

" what a surprise, packattack thinks the veteran should keep his job indefinitely. he probably thinks we should bring gilbert brown back to help with the d-line. "bring holmgren back", "let favre jerk us around forever". hell, with bigby hurting maybe teddy should think about giving butler a call. hey, buddy, it's 2008 not 1998. "

Mr. Bigglesworth wrote on Oct 14, 2008 7:53 AM:

" I agree, let's see how he holds up against Reggie Wayne or Marvin Harrison, not saying I don't like Tramon, because I do, but this will be a good barometer. "

PackAttack2020 wrote on Oct 14, 2008 7:37 AM:

" Tramon is good and very promising, but I think when the veteran gets healthy he comes back to his job. Work him back gradually...but he gets to have his job back. The Seattle receivers ARE NOT proof that you have arrived by keeping them shut down. "

GOD_HIMSELF wrote on Oct 14, 2008 5:55 AM:

" is he coming back to play the nickel? if i were coaching the team i'd leave williams in there. sorry al. "
