They’re among about 80 teachers nationwide to get no-strings-attached cash awards from the Milken Family Foundation. The awards are often called the “Oscars of teaching,” and they’ve been given out since 1987 to recognize outstanding teachers and encourage young people to go into the profession.
This year’s Minnesota winners are Kelly Woods, a third-grade teacher at Nellie Stone Johnson School in north Minneapolis, and Tracy Cross, a fifth-grade teacher at Galtier Magnet Elementary School in St. Paul.
Woods is credited with helping raise the performance of students who had been below grade level. Cross is Galtier’s building-wide math coach, known for what the Milken foundation calls “cutting-edge instruction.”
