94th Assembly District debate: Ideas to keep state strong in a weak economy

.
With the economy tanking, candidates for the Wisconsin District 94 Assembly seat offered their visions Tuesday for how western Wisconsin could stay ahead of the game.

Assembly Speaker Mike Huebsch argued economic development starts at home.
“The best way this economy and this state is going to move forward is that those dollars stay in your pocket,” Huebsch said.

Democrat Cheryl Hancock, a 12-year Holmen School Board member, accused Republican Huebsch of catering to special interests and refusing to close corporate tax loopholes rather than making public schools and higher education a priority to drive economic growth.

“Taxes on business will not get this state moving forward in a strong economy,” Huebsch countered.

Huebsch and Hancock squared off in a debate at the University of Wisconsin-

La Crosse campus moderated by political science professor Joe Heim.

Their audience bore little resemblance to the district they want to represent — mostly rural and suburban

La Crosse County. But Hancock played well to the room of mostly college students, many of whom scoffed at Huebsch’s support of nuclear power and concealed carry firearms legislation.

Hancock immediately went on the offensive with the

14- year incumbent, who she attempted to paint as someone who puts party and politics above people.

“He has been more concerned about the needs of special-interest groups than the needs of the voters,” she said.

But Huebsch said his main focus is to keep money with the public, not going to the state.

“I’m not as concerned with the state budget as I am with your budget,” Huebsch said. “The government has enough of our money.”

The candidates clashed on almost every topic, including the role of nuclear power in Wisconsin’s future, climate change, public school funding, the state prison system and corporate taxes.

Hancock, the executive director of American Red Cross Scenic Bluffs Chapter, favored restructuring the state’s K-12 education funding formula, arguing the current revenue limits leave districts strapped for cash in trying to meet rising personnel and health care costs.

Huebsch countered that the revenue caps keep tax increases from outpacing people’s ability to pay.

Tuesday’s debate was the first in a series featuring local candidates at UW-L. The next debate will be between state Sen. Dan Kapanke and Democratic rival Tara Johnson on Tuesday.

" OK, she wanted to change the formula. I get it, how would she change it? How would that HELP property taxes GO DOWN? These are the DEVIL in the DETAILS so to speak that she skirted around.

I’ll ask again, WHY didn’t the news media RECORD the entire debate and air it for those who couldn’t be there? "

Nope, not a conflict of interest?! The Red Cross' name shouldn't even be mentioned. Can we say Ethics Violation? Not to worry, the Red Cross will have her back soon.

Why does her being argumentative & instantly on the offensive not surprise me? "

" And don't forget about Hancock's statements during the last school board referendum in Holmen. She was talking out the Left, Right, Front, and Back of her mouth on that one. "

" To Sr. Advocate, re: "This current wave of anti-business shows the ignorance of the population today."

Well, our reps in Congress certainly handed Big Inept Business the keys to the store, so how anti-business can we really be? Those who really believe in pure capitalism would want Big Inept Business to be swept away by their own failure so new flowers can bloom in weed-free soil. "

" You don't want to be voting Republican in harsh economic times. The Dow went south again today, the TED spread is at record highs, and unemployment numbers (especially U6) are aiming for the moon. Repubs, during bad times, circle their wagons around the uber-rich: you'll be excluded as they suck in resources to protect themselves. "

" Hancock is the President of the Holmen School Board, and under her leadership the district started a charter school 'assuming' the funding would be there. Well the funding was not guaranteed, grant applications had to be written to recieve the funding, and the district didn't follow through. So, the charter school funding was NOT granted and Hancock feigned shock and disbelief as she thought it would be there all along. Under her leadership the district hired a Principal/Administrator for the Charter school "assuming" the funding would be there.

This is leadership? Give me a break! Not only is she not qualified to represent us, the Holmen School Board needs to be voted out! "

Better vote often, Cheryl is gonna get crushed. The good news is that the Red Cross won't be looking for a new director. "

" Tax business, tax business, tax windfall profits, tax, tax, tax. This current wave of anti-business shows the ignorance of the population today. History shows that when companies are profitable, jobs are created, unions can demand more pay and benefits, people can buy more and upgrade their lifestyles and so on. Now we are releagated to class envy. If you work hard and make money, everyone thinks you owe it to them and should give it to them. The smart person will not take financial risks if he/she has to give it all away. Socialism does not work, never has and never will.We have laws in place to stop those who truely exploit others. We just will not vote in legislators who will follow and enforce the laws. Instead we want to vote for people like Obama who exploit the class envy but make and give your taxes to anarchists. "

" tax-me-more - What you and the democrats are referring to with "tax big oil" is a corporate windfall tax. So, your point of the trickle down effect of corporate taxes may very well be true for those companies that are just barely getting by. For Exxon/Mobil, who has been consistently turning a multi-billion dollar profit per quarter, I just don't see how more tax on those profits is completely bad. In fact, I think it encourages them to invest some of that revenue on more R&D, which is better for all of us. "

" Economics 101.

1. Private business MUST show a profit to stay in business.

2. If the cost of raw materials goes up, business MUST pass those costs on to the consumer, or make cuts elsewhere. See [1].

3. If the cost of doing business goes up, hire taxes, business MUST pass those costs on to the consumer or make cuts elsewhere. See [1].

Conclusion, any INCREASE in business taxes WILL BE PAID by the CONSUMER.

So when the Democrats say they will "tax big oil," or close "loop holes" thus raising business taxes, economics 101 proves it means they (Democrats) will TAKE your money right out of your pocket. "

Your money is no longer safe in most banks. Somebody else gets to use it, not pay it back and then gets bailed out by our socialized government. THINK MAN! THINK! I know it's hard when you're a puppet. "
