Co-author to sign gas station book at Pearl Street Books

.
Co-author Jim Draeger will sign copies of the new book “Fill ‘er Up: The Glory Days of Wisconsin Gas Stations” at 6:30 p.m. today at Pearl Street Books, 323 Pearl St. in downtown La Crosse.

A former Pure Oil gas station at the corner of Cass and Fourth streets in La Crosse is one of those featured in the book, which Draeger wrote with Mark Speltz. The building was constructed in 1930, according to Tribune files, and since 2003 has housed the Mobile Detail Specialist detailing business.
The book’s cover has a photo of a restored Texaco gas station in Independence. Draeger, who will speak about the La Crosse gas station and others, is an architectural historian with the Wisconsin Historical Society. Speltz is a historian at American Girl.

" Another little La Crosse connection here... In the video where the Texaco Station in Independence was filmed, when it comes to the part showing the man named "Skinny" on his Harley, thats my father with my sister Lynn, on his 48 Panhead. I guess this explains why I'm into the motorcycle gig! "

" We caught that show last spring on WPT. It was really fascinating and fun to watch. Who knew that old gas stations could be so interesting?! Good luck with the book tour! "

" Nope, I meant 31.2 - digital. Jeepers. . .

Or the .2 sub-channel of whichever station you have, if not in La Crosse. "

" I recalls that Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) did a program some years back on the very same subject (it re-runs often, usually on 31.1 - digital - the "Wisconsin Channel" - because they don't really have enough material to fill up 24 hrs daily with new, original programming).

That Pure station (which I remember) housed a TV repair and antenna construction business for a number of years, prior to it's current or last use. "
