3rd District candidates stick to message in wide-ranging debate

.
Everyone running for Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional seat seems to agree times are tough.

They differ widely on the solutions.
Energy costs, foreign wars, an economic meltdown: Regardless of the issue, none of the three candidates veered far from their central campaign messages in the debate Tuesday night before about 100 people at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Democrat Ron Kind, seeking his seventh term, emphasized the need for change, which he said should include health care reform and an energy policy with an emphasis on new technologies.

For Paul Stark, a Republican challenger from Eau Claire, replacing the federal income tax with a consumption-based system would solve most of the country’s problems by encouraging businesses to create domestic jobs and putting more money in people’s pockets.

Kevin Barrett, a Libertarian from Lone Rock who believes the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, were the work of the U.S. government, said the answer is slashing military spending, ending foreign wars and abolishing the Federal Reserve bank.

The most notable differences came on energy, with Barrett and Kind arguing for a national investment in renewable energy technologies and Stark calling for an old-fashioned solution.

Kind invoked former President John Kennedy’s 1961 call to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade and said a “green revolution” will create good-paying jobs while weaning the nation off foreign oil.

Stark said oil brought the country to its current standard of living, and tapping domestic reserves will make gasoline and diesel fuel more affordable.

“I don’t know why people hate oil,” Stark said. “Oil is not bad.”

Stark defended the war as necessary and credited the troop surge for reducing violence.

“We cannot cut and run,” he said.

Kind argued for setting a withdrawal date as a signal to the Iraqi people to take responsibility for their own future.

Asked what role the government can play in making health care affordable, Stark said none, but the “fair tax” would leave people more money to spend on insurance.

Kind said health care is a “fundamental right” and he would support a national purchasing pool, combined with tax credits, to help people afford coverage.

Barrett, though he admits it goes against his libertarian philosophy, supports government-run health care.

Stark frequently attacked Kind as a profligate spender who doesn’t listen to the people back home. Barrett called him a “war criminal” for voting for military action in Iraq and Afghanistan, which he likened to the aggression of Nazi Germany.

Both criticized Kind for his support of the recent financial bailout package. Stark said it hasn’t worked, though he did not propose an alternative; Barrett called it “a complete waste” and suggested the Treasury Department should begin lending directly to banks.

Kind defended the $700 billion package as necessary and said it hasn’t worked yet because none of the money has been spent.

“I do hope it works,” he said.

" Real world - what planet are you living on? Stark and intelligent should not exist in the same sentence. He lacks credibility and common sence. He is just a bit above the conspiracy theorist. And I have seen him be rude when he didn't get his way. Ron is a real statesman and deserves to be re-elected. "

" Mack,

Ever heard of an over-correction? If your driving in the winter and begin to fishtail, you can carefully correct the problem (McCain) or jerk the wheel in the other direction (Obama). Jerking the wheel just exacerbates things and changes the direction of the skid. Sure it's a change, but probably not what you had in mind.

Liberals need to stop promoting protest voting. Bush isn't running again (thank god) and neither candidate's views are in-line with the current administration. Anyone that says otherwise isn't looking at the facts.

Vote on substance, not style! "

I agree! Kind has done nothing but ignore the people for years and now it is time for a change. "

" Ron Kind says we need change. Ok Ron, I'll go with you on this one and the first change we need to make is to get rid of Congressmen who have been in for seven terms, not much change coming from that direction. Buh Bye Ronny "

" Things have not even begun to get tough yet. We've been digging this hole for 8 years and it's going to take a new direction to fix. George Bush is leaving this country in exactly the same shape as he has left every company he ever worked for. Bankrupt. Sustainability is not in his vocabulary. It has way too many syllables for George. "

Sooooo we spend somewhere between $700,000,000,000 and $850,000,000,000 and Ron "HOPES" it is going to work???

WTF?????

ANYONE that voted for this "rescue plan" should be voted out of office. "

Broken Promise: “House Speaker Nancy Pelosi slipped in a $25 million provision for San Francisco's waterfront on a $15 billion federal water bill at the last minute. It’s pork barrel spending, yes, but more than that. Republicans are crying foul because the federal cash for port improvements and the bill's provision for Pier 35 cruise ship dockage all benefit a toney area of San Francisco -- one where Pelosi's husband just happens to own real estate about a mile away.” – Investor's Business Daily, May 9, 2007

Broken Promise: “In the bill funding EPA and Forest Service projects, Speaker Pelosi obtained $700,000 for a grant for San Francisco for use in the Lower Mission District. . .” – “House panel approves ‘earmarks’ for lawmakers’ home districts, Associated Press, June 22, 2007 "

Broken Promise: “Ranking Democrats vowed in December to put a moratorium on earmarks; instead, a record number infect legislation pending in Congress, with 32,000 requests this year, compared with about 13,000 in 2006 …. Ideally, congressional Democrats would keep their pledge to ban earmarks altogether.” – “Earmark Chicanery,” Press-Enterprise 6/20/2007 "

Broken Promise: House Democratic leaders have been silent on H.R. 473, legislation introduced by Rep. Broken Promise: 215 Democrats, including Democratic Rep. Rob Andrews (D-NJ), voted “NO” on a Republican proposal to prohibit increases in authorization spending levels if the Social Security surplus has been spent the previous year. – Roll Call Vote #300, May 3, 2007 "

Promise: “Our New Direction plan will slash interest rates on college loans in half to 3.4% for students …” – Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) “A New Direction for America,” Page 17

Broken Promise: Democrats drastically scaled back their plans for a student loan interest rate cut shortly after taking power in Congress. And six months after Democrats took power, no legislation to cut student loan interest rates – temporarily or otherwise – has been sent to the President. “The much-touted House Democratic measure to slash in half student loan interest rates over five years has been drafted to offer only temporary relief.” – “House Dems Offer Only Temporary Student Loan Rate Cut,” CongressDaily AM, January 16, 2007. Promise: “[W]e will make this the most honest, ethical and open Congress in history.” – Nancy Pelosi Press Conference, 11/08/2006

Broken Promise: “When Democrats recaptured the House of Representatives last November they promised voters ‘the most honest, the most open and the most ethical Congress.’ Five months after Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her leadership team took control, that promise remains unfulfilled.” – “A Wake-Up Call For Congress,” Cleveland Plain Dealer Editorial, June 10, 2007

With so little in the way of accomplishments, is it any wonder a poll released by Gallup showed that just 14 percent of Americans have confidence in this Congress, an all-time low? The previous low point for Congress was 18 percent at several points in the time period from 1991 to 1994, the last time Democrats were in power. "

Broken Promise: “Six months after taking over Congress, Democrats find they have accomplished little of their agenda. Perhaps not coincidentally, Congress’ job approval rating has reached a dramatic low … If they can’t reverse the trend, some Democrats are starting to worry, their majority could be short-lived.” – “Democrats Promised Way More Than They’ve Delivered So Far,” Chicago Tribune, June 21, 2007 "
