La Crosse health insurance rates among fastest-growing

.
Health insurance rates in La Crosse have risen 157 percent this decade, the third-highest inflation rate among Wisconsin metropolitan areas, according to a report issued Tuesday.

La Crosse tied with Milwaukee and Kenosha in Citizen Action of Wisconsin’s third annual Wisconsin health insurance cost ranking.
Green Bay had the highest rate increase from 2000 to 2009 at 262 percent, with Appleton and Oshkosh tied for second at 171 percent.

The report also found that Wisconsin health insurance inflation has been 30 percent higher than the national average since 2000.

For 2009, La Crosse health insurance rates ranked fifth among the municipalities, paying an average of $636.70 a month for a single premium. Eau Claire topped the 2009 list with an average single monthly premium of $665.97.

The 2009 report found wide disparities between higher-cost and lower-cost cities and regions of Wisconsin, as well as large differences in the rate of health insurance inflation. The gap in relative insurance cost between high- and low-cost areas is more than $4,000 a year for a family policy and more than $1,500 a year for a single policy.

“The striking numbers in this report bring down to the regional and local level the huge economic price we are paying for health insurance hyperinflation in Wisconsin,” said Robert Kraig, the report’s author.

" oops - meant to say property taxes..... "

" DM420 - hey I thought our healthcare systems in this area were all not for profit, so it shouldn't be about the profit...or are you saying they are just using that as a cover so they can exempt themselves from paying their fair share in things like proerty taxes for example. Wasn't there a reprot a while ago that indicated that the costs in La Crosse were higher than the national average too - so it just makes sense that our insurance costs would be so high. Something needs to be done, this just can't continue. "

" DM420...what is the difference between Communism and Obama's plan? I always thought it was more socialism, but you may be right. Which may also be why he wants to close gun shops and take the first step in disarming the public! "

" Darwin,

You implied Insurance is necessary if you want to continue owning your home. How so? Medical collections are different then other forms of debt.

Based on this comment, it's not surprising that you'd support Senior Advocate's Communist health care idea (or Obama's for that matter). "

" Senior Advocate,

*Next take all the profit out of all medical facilities and organizations.*

Yeah, and then watch them pack up shop. No company is going to work for zero profit. Did you even take a business class at WWTC? Also, what kind of care do you think your going to get at this not for profit company? Or are you going to have the government take it over... then it can be run just like Social Security. Right...

*No duplication of services in any community. Do not need both skemp and gundersen*

Who needs competition to bring prices down? Will just dictate zero profit like a Communist state. I bet this health care will be nothing less then sensational!

WOW. "

" Senior Advocate, can you please explain to me how exactly the insurance companies (many of them...with competition) are the problem? Is it not a function of rediculously expensive health care? I agree with your cost cutting of the health care system, but let the government take over the payor system? They have that now; its called medicare and medicaid, and ITS GOING BROKE IN A HURRY. Name ONE government agency funded by taxes that runs efficiently. "

" Now there is a big surprise! Just wait until the government gets involved. I don't know why people actually believe that government can make health care better. Have they ever fixed anything? Look at the bailout packages in the works! Wake up people! "

" How does this report know what my health insurance rates will be in 2009? I don't even know what they will be until next month sometime? "

Senior Advocate wrote on Oct 29, 2008 9:05 AM:

" You people will just not take time to understand this area. The health insurance companies are a large portion of the problem. You must tackle this one step at a time. Replace the health insurance companies with a few (very few) claims processing companies, strickly regulated, non-profit, with citizen oversite that controls of all wages, no bonuses, fair salaries, no say in what get paid.
Use existing gov. departments to cover fraud, just staff them better and make the violators do mandatory prison time. And that is just for starters. Next take all the profit out of all medical facilities and organizations. No more hospital involvment in community affairs, etc. Just strickly medical care. No duplication of services in any community. Do not need both skemp and gundersen. Run the two combined under one roof and eliminate all the extra administrative positions. That's just a start. "

" I know - so don't buy health insurance. But try getting catastrophically ill once. Insurance is necessary if you want to continue owning your home. "

" Big Spender - hardly. Because that amount grows my boss can't afford raises. Therefore I'm LOSING money every year. I plan on converting my partime job to a second fulltime job just for the benefits. Perfect.

The best part of insurance companies as all that money goes to a place which has NO IDEA who you are, and decides how your doctor can treat you. Patients are not served by insurance companies. They are healthcare PIMPS who care about their bottom line long before you get treatment.

Just a theory... did Gundersen get into health insurance so they wouldn't look like the bad guys? Or so that they could rake in more money without showing too much hospital profit? Don't get me wrong. I've had excellent care at GL - but it's always after fighting with their insurance company to see if I can use my money. "

" Regarding: "La Crosse health insurance rates among fastest-growing"

Therefore, ain't La Crosse wages and incomes "among fastest-growing" too?

Just wondering... "
