Richard S. Hulse, D.D.S.
ONALASKA — Richard S. Hulse, D.D.S., 74, of Onalaska passed away Monday, Oct. 27, 2008.
Dick was born Nov. 2, 1933, to Alvor S. Hulse and Verda E. Lutz in Ogden, Utah.
He grew up with a love of the outdoors, and was hunting and fishing by age 12, which continued to the present day. He graduated from Weber State University in 1953 with an Associate of Science Degree and went on to graduate with honors from the University of Utah in 1955 with a degree in biology. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree with high honors from Northwestern University in 1959 and was elected to the Omicron Kappa Upsilon honorary dental fraternity. He was a member of Psi Omega Frater-nity and elected Grand Master in 1959.
He was a proud member of the U.S. Army National Guard from 1951 to 1955 in the 222nd Field Artillery Battalion and then joined the U.S. Navy Dental Corps in 1959. He was assigned to the U.S. Naval Academy dental staff in Anna-polis, Md., until 1961. From 1961 to 1963, he was assigned as head of dental staff aboard the USS Proteus AS 19 1st Sub-marine Tender for Polaris submarines. He was awarded numerous commendations including the National Defense Medal and Navy Commen-dation Medal.
Dick married Sharon Williams in 1959 and had three children, Julie, Kurt and Wendy. He moved to La Crosse in 1968 to start a private practice of general dentistry. He was active in the La Crosse District Dental Society and presided as president in 1975. Later, he was divorced. On July 20, 1990, he married Teresa A. McGuire, and they had two children, Eric and Aaron.
Dick is survived by his wife, Teresa; five children, Julie (Paul) Hatlem of La Crescent, Minn.; Kurt (Jeanne) Hulse of Onalaska and their children, Kyle, Garrett and Calvin; Wendy (Rick) Lommen of Onalaska and their children, Lauren, Claire and Tyler; and Eric Hulse and Aaron Hulse, both at home; his sister, Kathryn Kammeyer of Ogden, Utah; his brother, Robert (Kathy) Hulse of San Juan Capistrano, Calif.; his mother-in-law, Gloria McGuire of Viroqua; his brothers-in law, Mike (Nancy) McGuire of West Salem; Bill (Tammy) McGuire of Monroe, Wis., Kevin McGuire of La Crosse, Brian (Wendy) McGuire of Mauston, Wis., and Patrick (Terri) McGuire of Viro-qua; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Al and Verda (Lutz) Hulse; his father-in-law, Jim McGuire; and his brother-in-law, Ed Kammeyer.
Dick was a founding member of the support group “Children of the Heart,” which he was proud of naming. He worked closely with doctors and geneticists at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center to help create the Down Syn-drome Clinic, which is used to this day. He worked closely with Dr. Marc Williams and Kevin Josephson in bringing the “Down Syndrome into the 21st Century Symposium” to Gun-dersen Lutheran. Doctors from as far as Utah came to speak.
Dick was a forward thinker and full of wonderful ideas. He lived his life by his motto: “Enjoy the moment, but keep looking ahead.” Dick was also a renaissance man — he knew so much about so many things. He loved learning. He was also a talented artist, watercolor being his favorite medium. Dick cherished the relationships he had with his patients and was proud to have been practicing dentistry for 50 years next June.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Oct. 29, at Schu-macher-Kish Funeral Home in La Crosse. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at First Congregational Church in La Crosse.

Ophelia G. Rotering
Ophelia G. Rotering, 85, of La Crosse died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008, at Hillview Health Care Center in La Crosse.
Ophelia, who was a native of Guad-alupe Calvo, Mexico, was born Dec. 22, 1922, to Jose De-La-Luz and Carmen (Franco) Garcia. She married Henry Rotering in 1949 in Texas, and they later divorced.
Ophelia was employed at Trane Co. for more than 28 years. She also served as a Spanish interpreter at Trane Co., University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Western Wiscon-sin Technical College. For many years, Ophelia also served as a home caregiver for mentally and emotionally challenged adults. She was a past board member of Riverfront Inc. and a longtime volunteer with the organization. She was also an active member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in La Crosse.
Ophelia is survived by two sons, David Rotering of Costa Mesa, Calif., and Henry Rotering IV of La Crosse; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, James (Elizabeth) Rotering and their children, Zoe, Ransom, Jamie, Liam and Esme, all of Madison, Andrea (Chad) Thorson and their children, Lars and Jette, of Madison, Joshua Rotering and his children, Natalie and Joshua Jr., of Marshfield, Wis., and Henry “Hank” (Erin) Rotering V of New Orleans; one sister, Catalina Garcia of Austin, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Esther Cano, and a brother, Rodolfo Garcia.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in La Crosse. The Rev. David Olson will officiate. Entombment will follow in Garden of Peace Mausoleum at Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery in rural La Crosse. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday
at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse, where a prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m., and at the church Friday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services.

Muriel L. Stuart
ONALASKA — Muriel L. Stuart, 88, of Onalaska died Monday, Oct. 27, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.
She was born Jan. 24, 1920, in Fredericksburg, Texas, to Marvin and Erna (Hahn) Wiemers. She married Milton Stuart on July 15, 1942, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 21, 1968. Muriel began teaching grades one through seven in a one-room schoolhouse in Stevenstown. She later taught fourth and fifth grades in Holmen. She taught from 1950 until 1985. She was a member of Onalaska Chapter 249, Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by a daughter, Shirley (Kyle) Stuart of Dell Rapids, S.D.; a son, Terry (Linda) Stuart of Onalaska; four grandchildren, John (Holly) Wermager, Matthew (Allison) Wermager, Jamie (Marnie) Stuart and Christopher (Leann) Stuart; three great-grandchildren, Anna, Joshua and Rachel; and three brothers, Jack, William and Charles Wiemers, all of Texas.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Onalaska United Methodist Church, 212 N. Fourth St., Onalaska. The Rev. Jenny Arneson will officiate, and burial will be in Onalaska Cemetery. Friends may call at the church Friday from 12:30 p.m. until services.
Memorials may be given to Onalaska United Methodist Church.

Marian R. Dolezel
Marian R. Dolezel, 81, of La Crosse died Monday, Oct. 27, 2008, at Bethany Riverside Care Center in La Crosse.
She was born in La Crosse on May 3, 1927, to Mathias and Elizabeth (Stangl) Dolezel. Marian graduated from Aquinas High School in 1944 and La Crosse State College in 1948. She received her master’s degree in teaching from the University of Iowa and began her 40-year teaching career, teaching for two years in Viola, Wis., five years in Black River Falls, one year in Ironwood, Mich., and 33 years in Cedar-burg, Wis., before retiring.
Marian was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and Wisconsin Education Association, and she volunteered for Lifeline and RSVP at the Franciscan Health System. She loved traveling throughout the United States and other countries.
Marian is survived by two sisters, Betty Anderson of La Crosse and Margaret Niedzwiecki of La Crosse; a brother, John Dolezel of Eau Claire, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Mary Dolezel of La Crosse; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, David; and two brothers-in-law, Richard Anderson and Joseph Niedzwiecki.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday,
Oct. 31, at St. James the Less Catholic Church in La Crosse. The Rev. Roger Scheckel will officiate. Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends may call at the church Friday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services.
Memorials may be given to the St. James Catholic Church Endowment Fund.

Natalie Evelyn Mertes
Natalie Evelyn Mertes, infant daughter of Kenneth and Susan (Manke) Mertes of La Crosse, was born Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center in La Crosse. Her precious short time ended Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008.
In addition to her loving parents, she is survived by two sisters, Rebecca and Rachel Mertes; her maternal grandparents, Kenneth and Carolyn Manke of Bangor; her paternal grandfather, Kenneth (Donna) Mertes of Grand Rapids, Minn.; her paternal grandmother, Phyllis Dreis of Hastings, Minn.; her maternal great-grandmother, Vivian Manke of Westby; her paternal great-grandmother, Leona Fisher of Hastings; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at Woodruff-Jandt Funeral Home, 4239 Mormon Coulee Road, La Crosse. Father Lawrence Berger will officiate.
