Longfellow students attend rally, hold mock election

.
Megan Dawson cast her ballot Wednesday for a candidate who gained her support earlier that morning.

She had researched John McCain and Barack Obama but still couldn’t decide between the Republican and Democratic presidential nominees.
“It was really a split decision for me,” said Dawson, 13.

But when it came time to vote in the school’s mock election, she said, a political rally earlier Wednesday organized by teachers helped McCain clinch her vote.

About 200 Longfellow eighth-grade students capped their lesson in civics by attending the political rally and voting with the sixth- and seventh-graders in a mock election.

They filed into the small gym to hear campaign worker Andrew Londre and eighth-grade student Katie Hafemann lobby for Obama, and campaign volunteer Patty Nuttal and eighth-grade student Ellyn Pedretti advocate for McCain.

Pedretti said McCain was “clearly the best man” and “an American hero” and touted his military record and experience in the senate.

Hafemann described Obama as a strong leader who would make changes in Washington that would be good for the people.

“Barack Obama believes the American Dream is available to anyone,” she said.

Longfellow students and staff dedicated classroom hours to learning about the 2008 presidential campaign before attending the rally.

Some watched the debates between John McCain and Barack Obama in their social studies classes, while others wrote commercials about the Republican and Democratic presidential nominees.

“To me, as a teacher, to not talk about it in class would be pretending the world didn’t exist out there,” said Richard Frost, who teaches eighth-grade American history at the school. “I encourage the students to encourage their parents to become an engaged electorate and go vote.”

Although they’d already decided to support Obama, Hannah Brekke and Tia Sneath, both 13, said the forum provided them with a lot of information.

“I know the candidates a lot better,” Brekke said. “I didn’t know a lot about John McCain before. I learned about his economic and health care plans.”

Sneath said hearing both candidates ideas in one setting was great, but her vote still went to the Illinois senator.

“I like Obama,” she said. “I like his views on everything.”

Alyssa Clarkin has been interested in this election and has educated herself by watching the debates.

She said she has been able to identify with Obama because he wants to lower taxes and address the war in Iraq.

At 13, Clarkin says it’s important for eighth graders to pay attention because they could have a say in the next election.

" rbamom,

You dodge questions as good as Obama. Maybe you should run for president. "

I am confused - what do you mean companies don't pay taxes, they pass them on to the customers.

I hope that you take this in the way it is intended, but I sure as hell wouldn't want you to be my accountant if you can't understand how companies don't pay taxes.

Also, tax cuts lead to increased revenues for the government. The issues that we currently have are due to over spending. Therefore our revenues don't keep up with expenses. Spending simply MUST be cut.

We may differ on the priorities of what should get cut but until that happens, nothing will get solved. "

" rbamom; you stated "things are not better for myself than they were 8 years ago." You sound like a typical Democrat who wants GOVERNMENT to make your life "better". YOU are in control of your life, what you do and how you choose to spend your money. By you being an accountant I'm guessing you probably have a pretty hefty mortgage every month, probably an SUV or two. I'm so tired of people whining about struggling when so many live beyond their means and then bitch that the government can't "help them out." Work hard, live within your means and life is much easier. You shouldn't count on the government to ease your pain....do for yourself!! "

" I have done research on the candidates and I am an accountant, so I have a pretty good understanding of financial issues. I am not even close to the $150,000, so I guess to me if it is $200K or $250K, I really don't care. Quite honestly, I don't think that either of the candidates should be preaching about tax cuts when our country has the record debt and budget deficits that it has now. I can only say things are not better for myself than they were eight years ago. If people were not selfish and greedy the trickle down theory would work, but unfortunately, that is not the reality of it. "

" rbamom,
Don't be naive enough to believe the middle class isn't going to suffer with higher taxes under Obama.

Do you invest for retirement(401K, mutual fund, etc)? If you do, you will get a tax increase under Obama.

Do you buy gasoline? If so, you will see a tax increase under Obama.

Do you buy products made by corporations? If so, you will see an increase due to Obama tax increase.

The truth is, with all the proposals Obama is putting on the table, most be funded from higher taxes. They don't pay for themselves. Sure, he'll lower your income tax; however, don't be surprised when every other tax goes sky high.

That will be some real CHANGE for all the liberals that didn't bother to research their candidate! "

" I was merely countering enuffalready's comment regarding Clinton."

***************

My comment regarding Clinton was with his failed campaign promise (lie) of middle class tax cuts. I was being sarcastic on the Monica thing, but what about the real issue of the middle class tax cuts??

Senator Obama is running the Clinton campaign playbook step by step and the Republicans still can't figure it out.

I'm betting $50 bucks that Mr. Obama goes back on the middle class tax cuts.

By the way, where is the end of middle class these days in the Obama camp?? $250k??, $200k?? $150k??

Getting an answer to that question is like trying to nail jello to a tree!! "

" Wake up people.
Mc Cain doesn't stand a chance in 99.99% of the public schools in this country. Kids are "molded" and "shaped" by techers these days. Teachers boldly give their opinions and then proceed to instruct the students based on said opinions.

Can I prove it, you bet, just sit down and have a
discussion with your kids a find out just how these so called open minded teachers operate. "

" nova,
I am not on any soapbox - if you read what I said, I don't care about anyone's love life. I was merely countering enuffalready's comment regarding Clinton. But exactly, what am I uninformed and bias about? "

Nova wrote on Oct 30, 2008 11:39 AM:

" rbamom...you might want to get off of your soap box when questioning one's character based on the success of their marriage. Do you hold a certain (northside) high school principal in the La Crosse school district to the same standards? Guessing you're not that consistent in your uninformed bias. "

rbamom wrote on Oct 30, 2008 11:19 AM:

" Oh also ennufalready...
It seems pretty apparent to me that John McCain left his wife Carol after he had already met his future wife Cindy (in the bar)..... Hmm. Personally, this doesn't matter to me, but the intern thing is a little old. We can impeach Clinton for lies, but Bush can't seem to ever tell the truth, even when it involves sending our children to put their lives on the line for our country. Go figure! "

rbamom wrote on Oct 30, 2008 11:08 AM:

" enuffalready-
I am confused - what do you mean companies don't pay taxes, they pass them on to the customers. McCain's big plan may include some tax cuts for businesses, but you do realize that he wants to tax our health care benefits, which will raise taxes for ALL business providing health benefits for their employees (as well as the employees). Also, on the issues that I am concerned with, McCain has supported most of the policies of President Bush to include the budgets - no change expected there. Obama also wants to stop this war which most of the american public no longer supports (yes, we all still support our troops even if we don't support the war!)-change there!
Finally, Obama wants the people in this country to have a voice in the government - "For the people" - remember that - definate change there! "

******************

@ rbamom:

a.) Why is is that you feel Senator Obama represents change, and McCain doesn't? Any FACTS would be appreciated. Help me understand.

b.)Companies don't pay taxes they pass them on to us, the consumer.

c.)Bill Clinton said the middle class would get a tax cut when he was campaigning. Guess he was too busy with interns, oops, I mean other things, to get around to that.

**********

I'm surprised that Republicans received any votes in the school elections given the political slant of the teachers. "

rbamom wrote on Oct 30, 2008 10:22 AM:

" Really, I can't believe that you are all so critical of our students. I bet most of them actually know more about the candidates than a lot of adults. Obama represents changes to the future and McCain simply does not. We cannot afford another 4 years of failing systems and giving tax breaks to record profit breaking companies. If you are in the middle class, you will not see tax increases under Obama - can't you hear!
Education is the base that will determine the future of our country - which in spite of all, I still love. My father dedicated his life to the military as well, so I respect that - but my vote is for Obama. I hope that these students are a representation of the actual polls. At least Obama is capable of discussing issues, which apparently McPalin cannot! "

Nova wrote on Oct 30, 2008 10:01 AM:

" No surprise on these results. Obama always appeals to individuals who pay NO taxes. Nice to know they still serve Kool-Aid with the (free) school lunches. Fortunately, I get to vote NO on the school referendum in the "real" election. "

Darwin wrote on Oct 30, 2008 8:39 AM:

" These kids probably spent more time doing research into the candidates as it was required for class. As opposed to those who simply watch their favorite pundit and take their word for it rather than doing some fact-checking on their own. This applies to BOTH sides. "

Hudson wrote on Oct 30, 2008 7:52 AM:

It's a good thing that these kids can't vote, cause they are out of touch with reality. "
