Meatpacker fined nearly $10M for violations

.
DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa on Wednesday fined a kosher meatpacking plant that was targeted by a federal immigration raid nearly $10 million for alleged violations of state labor laws.

Labor Commissioner Dave Neil assessed the civil penalties against Agriprocessors in Postville for what he called repeated violations of Iowa’s wage laws from January 2006 to June 2008.
The alleged violations included illegally deducting sales tax and miscellaneous costs, and failing to pay dozens of workers their last paycheck after the May raid by federal immigration agents.

The civil penalties total more than $9.9 million.

An Agriprocessors spokesman didn’t immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.

Also on Wednesday, a human resources employee of Agriprocessors changed her plea to guilty for her role in helping illegal workers use false documents to work at the plant.

Laura Althouse, 38, of Postville, appeared in federal court in Cedar Rapids to enter her plea to charges of conspiracy to harbor undocumented immigrants for financial gain and aggravated identity theft. She originally faced the conspiracy charge as well as charges of aiding and abetting document fraud and aiding and abetting aggravated identity theft.

Her lawyer didn’t immediately respond to calls seeking comment.

The U.S. attorneys office said Althouse remains free on bail pending sentencing, which will scheduled after a presentence investigation report is completed. She faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine on the conspiracy charge, and up to two years in prison and a $250,000 fine on the aggravated identity theft charge.

" Close all the businesses? ABSURD! When there is no national id/workers card, its insane to hold business accountable for enforcing our immigration laws. That is the GOVERNMENT'S responsibility! As long as you have sanctuary cities, churches that house and welcome the illegals and our government turns a blind eye..ie Bill Clinton, it is ridiculous to hold any business responsible! "

" Fined? This company should be out of business! Right now the Somali have taken over the town. I don't know how the locals stand for this invasion. Since that company moved into this little town there have been problems, it is a stinken dirty business, and where are the FEDERAL INSPECTORS? The D of A has become a disastor. WE have more meat packing companies who should be shut down, Hormel is another, Cargil, Many, we need to do something about this food industry folks!!!! "

" It's not that Americans won't do that job. It's that they won't do the job for that wage. I worked at a meat packing plant and until IBP opened in Iowa with their illegals in the mid 80's we were paid decent. Then unable to compete, wages dropped 3.50 an hour to 6.50. Illegal immigrants devalue labor period. "

" "Alleged" violation of state labor laws?

More lousy editing. The HR person pleaded GUILTY.

Throw the whole management team in jail and the hiring of undocumented workers will stop. Send a message to the managers who profiteer on the backs of people who are just trying to feed their families. "

" There are many jobs in this country that most Americans don't want to do. This is one of them. They should be paid a decent wage though. As long as it doesn't make the price of my t-bones go up. "

" Now thats sending a message sadly it will probably never be collected and if it is those workers wont see a dime the govt will keep it all. They turn a blind eye to a major fiasco like this then whenppublic pressure mounts to the point they must act, raid them, shut them down and make 10 million dollars.
This is America today and unless those people are compenstated the Gov't is as guilty as the company "

" These hardworking meatpackers, whether migrants or not, deserve to be paid a proper wage with proper benefits. Any firm that can't or won't provide these basics to its workers doesn't deserve to be in business! We've given businesses unrestricted access to the world's labor force: it's time that changed! "
