Leona A. Sendelbach
Leona A. Sendelbach, 92, of La Crosse died on Monday, Oct. 27, 2008, at Hillview Health Care Center, La Crosse.

She was born in St. Lucas, Iowa, on Feb. 2, 1916, to John and Mary (Schmitz) Wurzer. She married Adolph J. Sendelbach on Aug. 26, 1941, in St. Lucas; he preceded her in death on Sept. 14, 2007.

From 1983 until 2003, Leona and Adolph belonged to the Sweet Notes Band in La Crosse, where Leona played percussion, entertaining at local nursing homes and hospitals. Leona also enjoyed gardening.

She is survived by one daughter, Phyllis (Richard) Duffrin of La Crosse; one son, Roger (Patricia Ann) Sendelbach of Germantown, Md.; five grandchildren, Bryan and Aaron Duffrin of La Crosse, Tony (Noreen) Sendelbach of Atlanta, Sarah (Mike) Freda of Commerce Township, Mich., and Andrew Sendelbach of Germantown; one great-granddaughter, Natalie Freda; one sister, Lucille Boyer of Hawkeye, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Edmund Wurzer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, Oct. 31, at 10:30 a.m. in Marian Chapel at Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman. The Rev. Michael Gorman will officiate. Entombment will follow in St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum in Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be directed to Cathedral Parish. Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is assisting the family with arrangements.

Judith Skaar

WYOCENA, Wis./VIROQUA — Judith Skaar, 96, a resident of Columbia Health Care Center in Wyocena, and formerly of Viroqua passed away Monday, Oct. 27, 2008.

Judith was born Aug. 17, 1912, in Roslyn, S.D., to Thomas and Josephine (Aadland) Ottum. She was united in marriage to Scheldrup Skaar on June 7, 1933. They farmed in the Bud, Wis., area until 1970 when they moved to Viroqua and Sheldrup then worked for the Harbach and Nixon farms in the area until retiring.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Judith Skaar of Pardeeville, Wis.; and daughter, Janet of Portage, Wis.; three grandchildren, Rochelle (Kerry) Ohnesorge of Mosinee, Wis., Richard (Kristin) Skaar of Greensboro, N.C., and Renee (Kyle) Ades of Wyocena; seven great-grandchildren, Michael and Samuel Ohnesorge, Jacob, Madison and Mallory Skaar and Kimberly and Mason Ades; and other dear relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1989; three sisters, Gladys Schroeder, Audrey Perbix and Della Brolin; and a brother, Hobart Ottum.

Funeral services for Judith Skaar will be Friday, Oct. 31, at noon at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua. The Rev. Meg Hoversten will officiate, and burial will be in Viroqua Cemetery. Friends and relatives may call at Smith Funeral home in Pardeeville today from 4 to 7 p.m. and at the church in Viroqua on Friday from 11 a.m. until the time of services. Richard L. Johnston

Richard L. Johnston, 81, of La Crosse died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, at his home. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. James the Less Catholic Church, La Crosse. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, La Crosse, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church. Mary M. Burg

CALEDONIA, Minn. — Mary M. Burg, 86, of Caledonia died on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, surrounded by her family at Caledonia Care and Rehab, Caledonia.

She was born Dec. 27, 1921, in Caledonia to Owen and Anna (Hayes) Gavin. Mary attended Loretto High School in Caledonia; she married Everest Burg on Sept. 10, 1940, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Caledonia. He preceded her in death Dec. 31, 1995. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, its Council of Catholic Women and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Mary enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her nine children, Rita (Ron) Cuhel of

La Crescent, Minn., Maureen (Ardell) Lien, John (Elaine) Burg and Anne (Robert) Augedahl, all of Caledonia, Linda (Tom) Wenzel of Winona, Minn., Mike (Margaret) Burg of Caledonia, Patricia (Bruce) Arnold of Prairie du Chien, Nick (Peggy) Burg of Hokah, Minn., and Marion Burg Bland of Rochester, Minn.; son-in-law, Paul Schulte of LeRoy, Minn.; 29 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Heinen of St. Paul, Minn.; four brothers, Emmett “Jim” (Phyllis) of Brainerd, Minn., Lawrence (Elaine) Gavin and Wilfred (Josephine) Gavin, both of Caledonia, and Robert (Ruby) Gavin of Pennsylvania; a sister-in-law, Carol Gavin of Caledonia; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Jean Burg and Helen Schulte; a sister, Mildred; and four brothers, Earl, Father Harold, John and Joe Gavin.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia. Father Gregory Leif will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Holy Family Hall (behind St. Mary’s Church), where there will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Friends also may call one hour prior to the service at the church Friday. McCormick Funeral Home, Caledonia, is assisting the family.

Linda Ann (Paulson-Edwards) Hoyt

Linda Ann (Paulson-Edwards) Hoyt, 69, passed away Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. She lived in La Crosse with her daughter, MaryAnn, and her son-in-law, Eric Westerberg, and three grandchildren.

She was born Sept. 17, 1939, in Boston but resided in Wisconsin.

Linda was preceded in death by her husband, Norman L. Hoyt, and a sister, Joy Vigil-Fast.

She is survived by her children, Donald T. Hoyt of Eau Claire, Wis., Ann Maire Hoyt of Jackson, Miss., David L. Hoyt of La Crosse, Ronald W. (Rita) Hoyt of Eau Claire, Joann (Charles) Woodford of Eau Claire, and MaryAnn (Eric) Westerberg of La Crosse; 20 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Edwards of Mayer, Ariz.; many nieces and nephews and other family members; and lots of friends, all who loved her very much.

Services will be at noon Friday, Oct. 31, at Fuller Speckien Hulke Funeral Home, 3209 Rudolph Road, Eau Claire. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Friends and family may offer condolences at www.fullerspeckien.com.

Lorna ‘Lori’ Lee Atkins-Cox

NECEDAH, Wis. — Lorna “Lori” Lee Atkins-Cox, 50, of Necedah died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, Wis. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Necedah Assembly of God Church. Burial will be in Babcock (Wis.) Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at Torkelson Necedah Family Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the church. Jeffrey F. Manske

ONALASKA — Jeffrey F. Manske, 48, died at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008.

He was born Jan. 23, 1960, in Winona, Minn. His parents were Willard and Beverly (Kuhlmann) Manske. Jeff was the founder and owner of Advanced State Security. He married Rochelle (Stowell) and they later divorced.

He is survived by his mother, Bev Manske of Onalaska; three sons, Tyler of Minneapolis, and Travis and Tanner of Elk River, Minn.; a sister, Barb (Jay) Lamaere of Blaine, Minn.; a brother, Gary (Becky) Manske of West Fargo, N.D.; nieces and nephew, Mallory Forer, Melinda Beck, and Heather, Nicole and Andrew Manske; and a great-niece, Aubreah Beck.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Memorial services will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, 410 Main St., Onalaska. The Rev. Breck McHan will officiate. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 2 p.m. until the services.

Memorials may be given to Onalaska First Lutheran Church or the Hospice Unit in care of Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center.

Bette T. Schaffner

WINONA, Minn. — Bette T. Schaffner, 84, of Winona and formerly of La Crosse passed away, Friday, Oct. 24, 2008, at St. Anne Extended Healthcare, Winona.

Bette Theoline was born April 29, 1924, in Fountain City, Wis., to Allan and Alpha (Dressendorfer) Schaffner. Bette graduated from Fountain City High School and received her bachelor’s degree in foods and nutrition from University of Wisconsin-Stout. She taught at high schools in Becker and Gilbert, Minn., and River Falls, Wis., and Viroqua. After two years as a home agent in Wabasha County, Minn., she completed her master’s degree at University of Minnesota. The remainder of her career was spent teaching at University of Illinois, Champaign/Urbana; Montana State University, Bozeman, and Baldwin Wallace, Berea, Ohio. In 1985 she retired to La Crosse, where she worked actively at developing the Learning in Retirement program at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Bette is survived by her sister, Ardys (Charles) Keilholtz of Fountain City, and her family, Kim Keilholtz of Minneapolis, Paula (Gary) Haines and Nathan, both of Arcadia, Kevin (Tina) Keilholtz, Trevor, Ben and Brooke of Elgin, Minn., and Chrissanne (Robert) Pieper, Analise and Abby of Rochester, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, James and Gordon.

A private family service will be held with burial at Fountain City Public Cemetery, Fountain City.

Clara B. Beach

ONALASKA — Clara B. Beach, 87, of Onalaska passed on to her next life on Monday, Oct. 27, 2008, at home.

She was born June 11, 1921, in Canada. She loved to bicycle, fish, cook and knit — many people have items that she has knitted.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Frank (Shorty) Beach; a son, John (Debbie) Beach of Onalaska; a brother, Fred Brown of La Crosse; a sister, Doris Dascher of Eau Claire, Wis.; two grandchildren, Ryan Beach of La Crosse and Danielle (Ryan) Knoll of Onalaska; and two great-grandchildren, Hailey Beach and Luke Knoll.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles Brown, John Brown and Virgil Brown; and a sister, Orilla Radke.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday Nov. 1, at 11 a.m. at Forest Hills Cemetery in Eau Claire.

Helen M. Jaszewski

ARCADIA — Helen M. Jaszewski, 88, of Arcadia, formerly of Dodge, Wis., died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Arcadia Hospital.

Helen was born Feb. 1, 1920, in Independence to August and Mary (Gabriel) Susa. She married Joseph Jaszewski on June 7, 1938, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Independence. Helen and Joe farmed in Dodge until they retired and moved to Arcadia in 1975. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Rosary Society. Helen was a homemaker.

Helen is survived by three sons, Daniel (Kathy) Jaszewski of Arcadia, Thomas (Charleen) Jaszewski of Winona, Minn., and Ronald (Sue) Jaszewski of Arcadia; five daughters, Delores (John) Konkel of Arcadia, Marian (Donald) Snyder of Carlsbad, Calif., Theresa Wineski of Whitehall, Joanne (Roger) Klein of Arcadia, and Diane (Jerome) Rebarchek of Arcadia; 27 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; and a special friend, Josie Korpal of Arcadia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, on Jan. 27, 1981; a brother, Michael Susa; two half-sisters, Mary Slaby and Emma Bautch; three grandchildren, Paul and Brady Rebarchek and Rebecca Klein; and three great-grandchildren, David Konkel and Blake and Bennet Dallman.

Funeral services will be Friday, Oct. 31, at 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pine Creek, with the Msgr. Matthew Malner and Father Raj officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at Wozney-Killian Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. today, where there will be a 7 p.m. prayer service and 7:30 p.m. rosary. They may also call on Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Casket bearers will be grandchildren: John Konkel Jr., Brian Snyder, Andy Jaszewski, Dawn Salza, Roger Klein Jr., Sara Jaszewski, Chad Rebarchek, Brenden Jaszewski and Ron Jaszewski Jr.

Vickie Lea Snyder

Vickie Lea Snyder, 56, of La Crosse passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.

She was born in La Crosse on July 11, 1952, to Lee and Carol (Gordon) Snyder. Vickie was an avid outdoors person. She loved gardening, fishing, and camping. Vickie was gifted with a great sense of humor and a positive attitude.

Vickie is survived by five sisters, Kay (Ralph) Groth, Sally Snyder, Peggy (Jim) Fadness, Teri Kim Ferguson and Sandy Fox; four brothers; Robert (Sharon) Snyder, David (Kathy) Snyder, Bill (Sue) Snyder and John (Barbara) Snyder; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Vickie was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, James Ferguson.

A private funeral service will be held at a later date. The family would like to especially thank the care providers at Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center, the fourth-floor nursing staff at Gundersen Lutheran, Dr. Frank Cadwell, Dr. Roger Kwong, PA Andrew Irons and Kim’s co-workers at Gundersen Lutheran. Blaschke & Schneider funeral home is assisting the family.

Robert ‘Bob’ Lenning

TOMAH — Robert “Bob” Lenning, 82, of Tomah died of Parkinson’s disease Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008, at Tomah VA Medical Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Tomah VA Chapel. Burial will be in Duger Hill Cemetery, Finley, Wis. Family and friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the chapel. Torkelson Funeral Home of Tomah is assisting the family.
