Ethel Corrine Burr
LANCASTER, Wis. — Ethel Corrine Burr, 89, of Lancaster died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008, at Grant Regional Hospital surrounded by her family.
Ethel was born March 31, 1919, in Glen Haven, Wis., the daughter of Arthur and Helena (Breuer) Kaufman. She graduated from Bloomington High School. She married Melvin Burr on Jan. 31, 1941. Together they raised six children.
The joy of Ethel’s life was her family. Nothing brought her greater pleasure than to spend time with family and friends enjoying good conversation and laughter. If there was mention of a euchre game, Ethel was always ready. At many a gathering, Ethel would come prepared with her homemade macaroni and cheese, a favorite of family and friends.
Ethel enjoyed many years of bowling as a member of Carey’s Pillettes. She was also a member of St. Clement CCW and a volunteer at the Lancaster Care Center and the Lancaster Meal Site.
She is survived by four daughters, Marlene (Kenneth) Koehn of La Crosse, Linda (Jack) Roesch and Luann (John) Bendorf, both of Lancaster, and Rhonda (David) Broihahn of Dubuque, Iowa; and one son, David (Evonna) Burr of Holmen. Ethel is also survived by her grandchildren, Kathy and Mike Koehn, Mike, Jennifer and Ryan Roesch, Leann Handel and Lynn Wolf, Thomas and Elena Burr, and Steven and Trisha Broihahn. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren.
Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Steven; two brothers, Walter and Thomas Kaufman; and two sisters, Bernice Merrell and Florence Hanhardt.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster, with Father William Seipp officiating and Bill Manthe assisting. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster. Friends and relatives may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Schwartz Funeral Home, Lancaster, and from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service Sunday at the church. Richard L. Johnston
Richard L. Johnston, 81, of La Crosse died on Tuesday, October 28, 2008, at his home.
He was born on Nov. 7, 1926, in La Crosse to Roy and Mollie (Thill) Johnston.
Dick was a 1944 graduate of Aquinas High School. He was a Navy veteran of WWII, serving in the Pacific aboard the aircraft carrier USS Lexington (CV-16).
He married Rita Frederick on April 12, 1958, in Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Dick was a member of Carpenters and Joiners Local 1143 for more than 50 years. He was also a member of Roy Vingers American Legion Post 52 and Thomas L. Rooney VFW Post 1530.
He is survived by his wife, Rita; three daughters, Mary Johnston of Milwaukee, Laura (Tim) Mays of Rose Hill, Kan., and Kathleen (Henry) Walton of Chicago; five grandchildren, Nicholas and Michael Mays, Lauren McElroy, and Christopher and Peter Walton; two nieces, Charleen Berryman and Kathleen Nelesen; and a nephew, Richard Brague.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; a brother, Harold “Tiny” Johnston; and a sister, Kathleen Brague.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, Nov. 3, at 10:30 a.m. at St. James the Less Catholic Church. The Rev. Roger Scheckel will officiate. Burial will take place at a later date in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. A prayer service will be held on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
Callista Roster
Callista Roster, 90, of La Crosse died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008, in Hillview Health Care Center, La Crosse.
She was born Dec. 21, 1917, in Caledonia, Minn., to Matthew and Catherine (Hoffman) Thimmesch. She married Aloysius “Al” Roster on Aug. 12, 1940, in St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Caledonia. She was a graduate of Loretto High School, Caledonia, and Wisconsin Business College of La Crosse.
She was a member of Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman and was active in the Cathedral Woman’s Association. Callista was a secretary for James Grande, Houston (Minn.) County superintendent of schools, and spent nine years as manager of fashion accessories at Kmart in La Crosse.
She is survived by her husband, Al Roster of La Crosse; two sons, James (Cathy) Roster of Milwaukee and Thomas (Jeannie) Roster of Klamath Falls, Ore.; and by three grandchildren, Carolyn of Madison, Brooke of Portland, Ore., and Brent of New York City; and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathryn “Kay” on March 28, 1969.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, in St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral, 530 Main St., La Crosse. The Rev. Michael Gorman will officiate, with burial to be held in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, La Crosse. Family and friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the cathedral on Saturday.

Robert L. Adams
Robert L. Adams, 55, of La Crosse died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 30, 1953, in Milwaukee to Lyle and Linda (nee Krenke) Adams.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Kenneth Adams.
He is survived by his sisters, Karen (John) Bradley and Dr. Sandra (Tom) Eisele; a sister-in-law, Arlene Adams; nieces and nephews, Christopher, Jennifer and Robert Bradley, Adam, Carolyn and Spencer Eisele, and Todd, Tim and Bradley Adams; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m. at Wisconsin Memorial Park Chapel of the Chimes, 13235 W. Capitol Drive, Brookfield, Wis., with a visitation at the cemetery chapel from 10 a.m. until time of the services. Interment will follow in the cemetery.

Milton F. Quillin
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — Milton F. Quillin, 82, of Eau Claire passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008, at his home with his wife at his side.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 3, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 1712 Highland Ave., Eau Claire. Father Eugene Klink will officiate. Entombment will immediately follow the services in the Chapel of the Resurrection Mausoleum in Eau Claire. Friends may call on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Fuller Speckien Hulke Funeral Home and on Monday at the church one hour prior to services.
Milton was born on Dec. 30, 1925, to Thomas and Eleanor (Gasper) Quillin at the family farm in Brownsville, Minn. He married Helen Hammell on Sept. 17, 1951, at Immaculate Conception Church in Lansing, Iowa. They lived in La Crosse for a short time and then moved to Eau Claire in 1953. He was employed by G&R Tile and Terrazzo. In February 1958, along with three partners he started Eau Claire Tile and Terrazzo Inc. He retired in 1982 due to health issues. Milton was a lifetime member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers.
Milton is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen of Eau Claire; son, Daniel (Cathy) Quillin of Eden Prairie, Minn.; son, Steven (April) Quillin of Lakenheath AFB, England; and grandchildren, Kyle, Ellen and Sophia, who he was very proud of. He is further survived by a brother, Cyril Quillin of Onalaska; and a sister, Eileen (Ernest) Yanke of Port Charlotte, Fla.; as well as sisters-in-law, Verna Quillin, Stacia Quillin and Lois Quillin. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Marcel “Mac” Quillin, Devoine (Duke) Quillin and Donald Quillin; a sister, Rosemary Nixon; and a sister-in-law, Ann Quillin.

Frederick ‘Fritz’ W. Krachel
CHASEBURG — Frederick “Fritz” W. Krachel, 90, of rural Chaseburg passed away peacefully Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008, at Bethany St. Joseph Care Center in La Crosse.
He was born July 15, 1918, to Alfred and Theresa (Kapanke) Krachel in rural Chaseburg. He was baptized and confirmed by the Rev. E.H. Palechek at Hamburg St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, where he remained a member all his life. On Oct. 25, 1945, he married Alvina Johnson at Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church. He farmed the home farm until 1966 and then worked for the town of Hamburg for 26 years. He was a longtime member of the Coon Valley Lions Club and served on the Coon Valley Farmers Telephone Company Board of Directors.
Survivors include his wife, Alvina; a sister-in-law, Lola Krachel of Onalaska; nieces, Teresa (Dave) Kasten of Woodstock, Ill., and Betty (Randy) Dahlen of Westby; great-nephews, Kristofer (Ali), Todd and Cody Kasten, and Kory (fiancée Ashley Krueger); and great-niece, Karlee (Tom) Wallin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Arnold; and a brother-in-law, Wallace Johnson.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chaseburg. The Rev. Steven Oldre will officiate, with burial in Hamburg Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Chaseburg. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until service time. Seland Funeral Home in Coon Valley is assisting the family. Memorials to Hamburg Lutheran Church are preferred.
