Behind the scenes, electors play role in presidential democracy

.
If Republican John McCain wins the popular vote in Wisconsin on Tuesday, state Rep. Mike Huebsch will cast one of the state’s 10 electoral votes.

If Democrat Barack Obama wins, it will be Rollie Hicks doing the voting.
And should Libertarian Bob Barr win, Tomah Mayor Ed Thompson will have the honor.

“We don’t get much work,” said Thompson, who ran in 2002 as the Libertarian candidate for governor.

Huebsch, Hicks and Thompson are three of Wisconsin’s 40 potential electors.

Their names won’t appear on the presidential ballot, but technically they are the ones who will be elected. They in turn will cast the state’s 10 electoral votes Dec. 15.

Wisconsin is one of 48 winner-take-all states where the candidate who wins a plurality of the popular vote gets all the electoral votes. A candidate must receive at least 270 electoral votes to be elected president.

Each party nominates one elector from each of the state’s eight congressional districts usually the party chair plus two at-large electors.

In the Republican party, state chairman Reince Priebus got one of those spots; the other was slated for the state’s top elected Republican. But Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen wanted to be impartial, so Huebsch said the honor came to him.

Huebsch, a West Salem Republican who is speaker of the Wisconsin Assembly, is on the ballot himself, trying for an eighth-term.

“Getting together and voting is all perfunctory,” Huebsch said. “It’s just for show.”

But the system is not.

Huebsch, like many supporters of the Electoral College, say without it presidential candidates would never bother campaigning in states like Wisconsin, instead focusing on places with large populations.

Thompson was surprised to hear he was still an elector and said he now considers himself an independent. He’s not a fan of Libertarian candidate Barr but is bound by law to vote for him should he win.

Hicks, a retired educator from Eau Claire, who got involved with the county Democratic party in 2003, said when nominated he thought of the college that elected George Washington as the first president with 69 votes in 1788.

“I couldn’t help but think of what an honor it is,” he said, “to play through the whole drama of our democracy.”

" There is a distinct pattern through history that when we have a Democratic administration we grow more jobs, grow the economy, stocks do better, all better by a significant difference than when there is a Republican administration. If you can even classify these recent cats as Republicans. These dudes are off the chart in ways that are not good. "

" Spender:

There is a distinct pattern throughout American history: When tax rates are reduced, the economy’s growth rate improves and living standards increase. Good tax policy has a number of interesting side effects. For instance, history tells us that tax revenues grow and “rich” taxpayers pay more tax when marginal tax rates are slashed. This means lower income citizens bear a lower share of the tax burden – a consequence that should lead class-warfare politicians to support lower tax rates.

Conversely, periods of higher tax rates are associated with sub par economic performance and stagnant tax revenues. In other words, when politicians attempt to “soak the rich,” the rest of us take a bath. Examining the three major United States episodes of tax rate reductions can prove useful lessons.

Again, I ask, why raise taxes on ANYONE?? "

Okay then BS how tell me again how bad the Republican deficits are. When you look at the deficits as a % of GDP, the last 3 years are all less than the worst Clinton years.

Also, stated in constant 2000 dollars, tax receipts to the government are up 14% compared to the Clinton years. So why would we want to raise taxes on any group, rich or poor, when lower taxes increase revenue to the government?

It's a SPENDING ISSUE. Lets cut spending!! "

Congratulations! You're the first rightwinger to dare to take me on directly, instead of just dodging the point in the usual rightwing way! Refreshing!

To answer your point, Obama will have to cut corporate welfare and transfer payments to the rich: the Dems need to reconsider the Bush-McCain Wall Street Bailout Bill as well. The working classes fare better under Obama than under McCain, by far: rich white guy McCain is all about making life better for rich white guys, like the Bushes, like Reagan, like Nixon...

The record, as I posted below is clear: Republicans run up the debt more than Democrats, by far. "

Most of us here have a conversation, back and forth. Sure we aren't agreeing often, but we do listen to each other and use that to form a response. Spinner isn't contributing, he's just copying and pasting liberal talking points over and over and over again.

If that's what he going to do, then I won't read his posts, ever. It's a childish and frankly, asinine. While I don't agree with many of the Obama supporters that blog here, I do respect them for posting their thoughts and not copying and pasting the same link in every political article in that day's paper. " Analogy: you have a party to go to. You are tired of your old clothes, so you go out and buy a good looking pair of new shoes. When it is time to get dressed for the party, you begin to wonder if those new shoes are going to be comfortable and if they will serve the purpose. So you go to the closet and get out your old reliable comfortable pair of shoes and wear them because you know what you can expect from them. For those of you who can't figure it out, party = election, new shoes = Obama, old reliable shoes = McCain. "

Employers need to make money to operate. Then when the government takes over the big business and is now in total control of the US You can go be in Obama's civilian army/workforce--that the governemnt controls.
