Leslie ‘Les’ J. Jacobson
Leslie “Les “ J. Jacobson, 78, of La Crosse died at his home with his family by his side on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008.
He was born on the family farm in rural Houston County, Minn., on Aug. 30, 1930, to Carl and Dora (Stigen) Jacobson. He married Jeneane Raatz on Oct. 11, 1958, in La Crosse. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Les worked in the auto body repair business since 1956. He established Jacobson Auto body in La Crosse in 1956. He later purchased Schaller Frame & Alignment Repair in 1981 merging the two businesses into Schaller-Jacobson Collision & Alignment Repair. Eventually, he became co-owner of the business with his son, Brady, when they moved to their new facilities in 1996.
Les served with the 82nd Airborne during the Korean War and held the rank of corporal at the time of his discharge. He was a past member of Roy L. Vingers’ American Legion Post 52, Elks Lodge, and a member of Moose Lodge 1920 of La Crosse. Les was also a member of Mary, Mother of the Church Parish.
Les is survived by his wife, Jeneane; and four children and their families: daughter, Leslie Jacobson (Mark Syftestad) of Richland Center, Wis., and her son, Ryan Kinyon of La Crosse; daughter, Andrea (Jim) Curtis of Onalaska and their children, Jennifer Curtis of La Crosse, Michael Curtis of Lakewood, Colo., and Michelle Curtis of Onalaska; son, Brady (Mary) Jacobson and their children, Megan and Erin Jacobson of Stoddard, and Christin (Michael) Scott and their daughter, Hannah, of Bellevue, Neb.; and son, Craig Jacobson and his daughter, Rachel Jacobson, of Onalaska.
He is further survived by two brothers, Clifford (Marge) Jacobson of La Crosse and Norman (Lou) Jacobson of Loveland, Colo.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Julie Schroeder of Denver, John (Bonnie) Raatz of La Crosse, Gordon Gullikson of Onalaska, and Lee Weymiller of New Albin, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Verna Weymiller, Lillian Ellingson, and Marie (Blomquist) Gullikson; and one brother, Milton Jacobson. His favorite pastime was being with his family. The kindness and love he showed to his family and friends will be greatly missed.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, Nov. 3, at 10:30 a.m. at Mary, Mother of the Church Parish at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, La Crosse. The Rev. Douglas Robertson will officiate. Entombment, with military honors, will be held in Oak Grove Garden Mausoleum, La Crosse. Friends may call at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m., and at the church on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be given to the Cancer Center at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center.
Nancy Conner Dahl
Nancy Calloway Ott Dahl, 85, of La Crosse passed away at the Hillview Healthcare Center on Oct. 30, 2008.
She was born on July 16, 1923, to Ben and Jessie (Calloway) Ott in La Crosse. When Nancy was 3 months old and her brother John was 4 years old her mother, Jessie, died. Nancy was raised by Eddie and Elsie (her aunt) Newburg. Nancy was always grateful to be blessed with a wonderful childhood with her cousin, Bill Newburg, and her brother, John. John was raised by his grandparents, Will and Magdalena Ott. John and Nancy spent summers together at “Sunset Cottage” located on an island on the Mississippi River. Later the cottage was lost due to the building of the lock and dam.
Nancy went to school in La Crosse and then attended Durham Hall in Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota. Nancy married Chuck Conner in 1942; they were later divorced. In the 1950s she taught modeling and organized style shows. She also did some TV commercials for WKBT. She enjoyed being involved in the Mississippi Gamblers and the Tuesday Club Investment Groups. Her gardens were her true love and the passion and skill for gardening came from Will Ott, who was a master gardener. She took great pride in her home located at 1801 Cass St.
In 1968 she married John Weigel and lived in the Chicago area. During this time she also modeled for Saks Fifth Avenue.
After returning to La Crosse in the 1970s she married Kenny Dahl.
Nancy is survived by two daughters, Sue (Charles) Gelatt and Lynn (David) Kulas; seven grandchildren, Colin Jimieson (Jenn Wells), Katie (Brian) Devlin Huxtable, Jennie Devlin (Mike Douglas), Sarah Ipsen, Anna Ipsen, Brook (Wendy) Torstenson and Eric (Gwen) Torstenson. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren. Nancy was blessed to have Cindy Peterson and Jan Zenker as two special people in her life who helped care for her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Krisa Torstenson; a brother, John Ott; and her dear friend, Sam Fellows.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at First Presbyterian Church, 233 West Ave. S. The Rev. Taylor Haley and Father Bernard McGarty will officiate. Friends may call Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson St., on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. and again at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be sent to the Alzheimer’s Organization, Hillview Healthcare, Diabetes Foundation, Franciscan Skemp Medical Foundation, Gunder-sen Medical Foundation, or the charity of the donor’s choice.
The family is grateful for the loving care that Nancy received from Watkins Manor and Roger Metz Facilities in Winona, Minn., and the wonderful staff at Hillview Healthcare Center. Thank you all for your compassion.
Royce Arlyn Mensink
VIROQUA — Royce Arlyn Mensink, 73, of Viroqua died on Wednesday evening, Oct. 29, 2008, in his apartment in Oak Grove, Minn., with his family at his side.
He was born on Nov. 4, 1934, in Preston, Minn., to Earl and Eva (TerMaat) Mensink. He graduated from Preston High School in 1953, was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1954, and served his country for two years in Germany. He then graduated from Winona (Minn.) State University in 1960 and later earned a master’s in business administration degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Royce and Caroline (Serven) met in Milwaukee in 1963 and were married later that year. Royce accepted a position at Milwaukee Area Technical College in 1964 teaching computer programming and business information systems. He retired from MATC in 1998 after teaching there for 34 years. Royce and Caroline moved to rural Viroqua in 1999. In October 2008 they rented an apartment in Oak Grove to be near their family while he was ill.
He was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, American Legion No. 138 and VFW Post No 3032, Friends of the Library, and Viroqua AARP. He enjoyed sports, traveling, reading and being with his family.
Royce is survived by his wife, Caroline; two sons, Matthew (Kari) Mensink of Oak Grove, and Todd (Kellie) Mensink of Coon Rapids, Minn.; and four grandchildren, Logan, Andrew, Mattisyn and Preston Mensink. He is also survived by one sister, Evelyn Roelofs; four brothers, Wendell (Cleo) Mensink, Elwyn (Eileen) Mensink, Lyall (Charlene) Mensink and Loyal (Alayna) Mensink, all of Minnesota; and other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Mark Mensink.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Viroqua with Pastor Kathy Ingbritsen officiating. Military rites will be provided by Jacobson-Olson American Legion Post No. 138, Running-Johnson-Ray VFW Post 3032 and U.S. Army Honors Team. Burial will be in Greenleafton Cemetery in Preston. The family suggests memorials to either Immanuel Lutheran Church of the American Cancer Society.

Wesley L. Schuppel
ONALASKA — Wesley L. Schuppel passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008, surrounded by his loving family.
Wes was the son of Earl and Octavia (Munson) Schuppel. Upon graduation in 1940 from Onalaska High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1941-1947. He departed Pearl Harbor on Dec. 5, 1941. He was a member of Onalaska Post No. 336 of the American Legion.
After service, he returned to Onalaska and began raising mink with his brothers, Erwin and John, on the Schuppel Mink Farm. He later retired from Western Technical College.
Wes loved to travel to various parts of the U.S. and enjoyed getting together with his former Navy shipmates for reunions. But he was especially fond of his trips to Hawaii. He will be remembered for his love of woodworking and for all of his help in building and doing remodeling projects for Bob and Joan.
Wes is survived by his loving wife, Harriet (Larson); his son, Bob (Julie) Schuppel of West Salem; his daughter, Joan (Mike) Mulrine of Onalaska; grandchildren, Kia and David Mulrine; brothers, Erwin, and John (Margo) Schuppel of Onalaska; sister, Lorraine (Virgil) Lang of Onalaska; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Wendell and his wife, Esther; his sister, Maydell and her husband, Clifford Young; and two nieces.
Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church, 1010 Sill St., in La Crosse. The Rev. Stephen Sandness will officiate and burial, with full military honors, will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 401 Main St., Onalaska, on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the service.

Miles ‘Gov’ A. Marnach
CALEDONIA, Minn. — Miles Andrew Marnach, 88, of Caledonia died Thursday, Oct 30, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center in La Crosse surrounded by his family.
Miles “Gov” was born Dec. 22, 1919, in Caledonia to Nicholas and Charlotte (Schiltz) Marnach.
Gov was a 1937 graduate of Loretto High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving in England and France. Miles married Elsie A. Wiemerslage on June 18, 1946, in Caledonia. Miles and his brother, Earl, owned and operated the Marnach Hotel, then Marnach Beverage until 1973. He served on the Caledonia City Council and was Caledonia treasurer for 13 years. Miles was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia, and a proud member of the Knights of Columbus Post 1198, American Legion Post 191, and VFW.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Elsie; two sons, Terry (Carol) of Brownsville, Minn., and Jeffrey (Katherine) of La Crescent, Minn.; and one daughter, Jaclyn (Albert) Butenhoff of Winona, Minn. Gov is also survived by nine grandchildren, Colin, Andrew, Nicholas, Daniel and Matthew Marnach and Alyssa, Mark, Philip and Karl Butenhoff. He is further survived by a sister, Dolores Augedahl of Caledonia.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Arnold, Earl and Vernon Marnach; and a sister, Mary Joan Wiebke.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 308 E. South St., Caledonia. Father Gregory Leif will officiate and burial, with military honors, will be in Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at McCormick Funeral Home, 205 E. Main St., Caledonia, where a prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. Friends also may call one hour prior to the service at the church Monday. Memorials may be given to St. Mary’s School or Caledonia Public Library.
Matthew Peter Fokema
Matthew Peter Fokema, 34, of La Crosse left his earthly home on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008.
He was born March 22, 1974, in Madison. He was baptized and confirmed in the United Methodist Church. Matthew graduated from Sparta High School. He was a La Crosse Tribune carrier for a number of years, and worked at Sparta Floral and the Foundry in Sparta.
Matthew was an avid reader and enjoyed music. He had a profound interest in world affairs and current events.
Matthew is survived by his parents, Marvin and Shirley (Heintz) Fokema of Cambridge, Wis.; a sister, Sarah Rohn of Sparta; a brother, Daniel (Chelsea) Fokema of Sparta; his paternal grandmother, Loreen Fokema of Caledonia, Minn.; a niece and nephew, Morgan Rohn and Mason Medley; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Verdayne and Alva Heintz; and his paternal grandfather, Peter Fokema.

Jane B. Stuckert
Jane B. Stuckert, 80, of La Crosse died on Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008, in her home.
She was born on Feb. 23, 1928, in La Crosse to Vilas and Georgina Horner. Jane graduated from Central High School and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She married Earl Stuckert on Aug. 8, 1955. Jane was a board member of the La Crosse Society of Arts & Crafts. She was a naturalist at Hixon Forest, an avid painter, and worked with abused labradors.
She is survived by her husband, Earl; a son, Steve (Shirley) Stuckert of Pittsburgh; two grandchildren, Max and Mackenzie; and a brother, Jack (Carol) Horner of La Crescent, Minn. She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Nov. 3, at 11:30 a.m. at English Lutheran Church. The Rev. Duane Baardseth will officiate. BLACK RIVER FALLS — Vera (Douglas) Marie Greengrass, 61, of Black River Falls died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008, at Black River Memorial Hospital, Black River Falls. Traditional Ho-Chunk services will be tonight and Sunday evening at Andrew Blackhawk American Legion Post 129, Black River Falls.

Lorraine M. Lehrke
Lorraine M. Lehrke, 77, of La Crosse passed away on Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008, in her home.
She was born in La Crosse on April 6, 1931, to George and Anna (Bachman) Lehrke. Lorraine was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in La Crosse.
She is survived by her sister, Betty (Dick) Fried of La Crosse. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister.
