Ron Kind wins seventh term

.
Ron Kind easily won re-election to his seventh term in Congress on Tuesday.

With 60 percent of precincts reporting, the La Crosse Democrat had 62 percent of the votes in a three-way race for Wisconsin’s 3rd District seat.
Kind said it’s an honor to represent the district again but was more excited about the election of Democrat Barack Obama.

“Parents tomorrow will be able to look their kids in the eye and honestly say, ‘You can grow up to be president,’” Kind said of the election of the nation’s first black president. “All parents can say that now.”

Kind said he looks forward to working with the Obama administration, which he said would work across party lines.

“No party alone can solve these problems,” Kind said. “They’re too big.”

Kind fended off a challenge from Republican Paul Stark, an Eau Claire homebuilder, who carried about 36 percent of the votes.

Stark praised Kind as a formidable candidate but vowed to run again in two years.

“I’m not giving up,” he said.

Libertarian Kevin Barrett, a former college teacher from Lone Rock best known for his outspoken belief that the U.S. government was behind the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, carried about 2 percent.

Kind, a former La Crosse County prosecutor, has not had a close race since he was first elected in 1996.

He was vastly better funded than either of his opponents and had spent more than $800,000 on this campaign as of the Oct. 15 reporting deadline.

Barrett, who raised only about $5,000, Monday declared himself the victor — in “votes per dollar.” He planned to announce a proposal that elections be decided on votes per campaign dollar spent and said he would ask Kind to resign and “vacate his Washington office so I can move in.”

" I hope Ron will be less timid in future, although it's his timidity that keeps him in office. The viewpoints of most U.S. politicians are kept submerged by their indebtedness to corporate money and influence. C'mon, Ron, take a stand!

Now it's time to clean up the Bush mess; that's a tall task for any new president! The bleeding hasn't stopped, though, Bush can still do a lot more damage to the country in his last two and a half months in office. Let's hope Congress can put the kibosh on any of that!

Next, progressives must try to wean the Democrats away from corporate patronage; that's the hardest and most necessary task of all. Organized pressure is what it will take: check out the moveon.org site or alternet.org for more.

" Ron Kind is a crook. He bailed HIS buddies out. He has been a yes man in Washington for years, and gets all the "perks". Now he is going back slapping all the "good ol boys" on the back and yucking it up on OUR money. He does not listen, and the morons voted him back in. He is going to be a yes man to Obama and when the tax increases come along he'll vote for them. There is no way the pie in the sky promises Obama has made, are going to work with-out a tax increases to the middle class. The math does not work with-out it. "

" I guess not enough people were against the Wall Street bailout. I for one was hoping a message would be sent to Ron that he did the wrong thing. "

" Gee common cents: you didn't advocate term limits when Thompson was governor, did you? Makes me wonder why now when Democrats are now more in the majority that you seem to want it. Just something for all those wanting term limits to think about. And we just had a way to limit terms and still the people voted them in. So if we aren't doing our job as citizens, why force it upon those willing to serve? The choice should be done at the ballot box, not by artifical means. "

" Really ? Ron Kind - AGAIN ? He's done what again ? Just rip on George Bush, that's all I ever hear him do. He has no vision or no direction. Of course, he likes Obama, at least he has a plan. What's the matter Ron, your kids too old to dress up in Packer clothes during my Packer game to get some votes ? "

" common-cents, Ron Kind is a U.S. Representative not a Wisconsin (Assembly) Representative. Madison has nothing to do with term limits for federal government representatives. "

Merlewolf wrote on Nov 5, 2008 8:44 AM:

" Will we never learn? This is what's wrong with politics...it shouldn't be a career. Too bad they can't just serve a term or two and then go back to farming or sales or writing or carpentry.

Politicians are like diapers and should be changed often...and for the same reason! "

common-cents wrote on Nov 5, 2008 8:07 AM:

" 7th Term, we need change. We should demand TERM LIMITS in Madison, 2 terms and your out.
Lets get TERM LIMITS added to the midterm elections ballot and VOTE yes to term limits.
Our lawmakers will never pass term limits, because they never listen to the people.
The good old boys club needs to have the tree fort burned down. "

" The lowest congressional approval ratings in the history of this country and we just keep electing the incumbents over and over. I see even being indicted doesn't prevent your reelection. Heck, Stevens in Alaska was convicted and he's leading his race. How about some accountability people. I don't just mean Ron Kind either. "

Sully wrote on Nov 5, 2008 2:37 AM:

" Kind? Great! Another term of listening tours, and blowing smoke. His own words were he got two kinds of calls to his office on the bailout plan. No and hell no. He votes for it against the wishes of the people he represents and they are stupid enough to elect him again.
Guess I am confused. I thought he was supposed to represent us. "
