Monica M. Schank
ARCADIA — Monica M. Schank, 91, of Arcadia died Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Medical Center in Arcadia.
She was born April 23, 1917, in Arcadia to John and Mary (Filla) Rumpel. On Oct. 12, 1937, Monica married Edward Schank in Arcadia. He died Dec. 4, 1993.
Monica was co-owner of their farms and worked hand-in-hand with Edward, farming their entire lives. She was an active member of OLPH Catholic Church and the Rosary Society, and for more than 40 years served as a member of the Hospital Auxiliary.
She is survived by three daughters, Joan Guenther of Arcadia, Doris (Ralph) Ruben of Buffalo City, Wis., and Diane (Dennis) Fritsch of Rochester, Minn.; three sons, David (Charlotte) Schank, Tom (Renee) Schank and Daniel Schank, all of Arcadia; daughter-in-law, Jane Kujak of Arcadia; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; special daughter in her heart, Joan Lambert-Hafermann of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; one sister, Thecla Foegen of Arcadia; two brothers, John (Janice) Rumpel and Jerome (Cleo) Rumpel, both of Arcadia; and special friends, Bernetta Haines, Grace Galuska, Gert Chambers and the ladies of the Hospital Auxiliary.
Monica was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, John Schank; four brothers, Raymond, Albert, Joseph and Ernest Rumpel; four sisters, Molly, Margaret, Bernadine and Marian; and one son-in-law, Alvin Guenther.
Monica was a gentle, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. She will forever be remembered for her wonderful coffee cakes, her love for gardening, cooking, and quilting, her timeless hours of volunteering and her nightly card games.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Holy Family Parish, Arcadia, with Father Michael Klos and Monsignor Edmund Klimek concelebrating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Arcadia. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Wozney-Killian Funeral Home, Arcadia, where there will be a 7 p.m. prayer service and 7:30 p.m. rosary. Friends also may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church.
Casket bearers will be Kevin Guenther, Frank Schank, Scott Schank, Greg Ruben, Zach Schank and Craig Schank.

Kenneth G. Arneson
EAST LANSING, Mich./LA CROSSE — Kenneth G. Arneson, 69, of East Lansing and formerly of La Crosse died Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Mich.
He was the loving father of Joseph Arneson and cherished brother of Richard and the late Lee Arneson.
Ken worked for more than 25 years in the insurance industry in Chicago. Ken moved to Michigan in 1999 and enjoyed reading, walking the many nature trails in the area and attending Michigan State University sporting events with his son. Ken looked forward to the many festivals and outdoor concerts held every summer in East Lansing. He also has been a volunteer for Active Living for Adults (ALFA) in East Lansing.
Ken was a graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School, class of 1956. He received his B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and did his post-graduate studies at Florida State University and Northwestern University.
A Memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1333 13th St. S., La Crosse. Memorial visitation will be
9 a.m. until time of Mass.

Daniel ‘Danny’ Maynard Burfield
YUCATAN, Minn. — Daniel “Danny” Maynard Burfield, 25, of Yucatan died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, due to injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident in rural Caledonia, Minn.
Danny was born March 13, 1983, in Winona, Minn., to Terry and Rhonda (Thomas) Burfield. He was raised in Houston, Minn., and lived there all of his life. Danny attended church and Sunday school at Bethany Evangelical Free Church in Houston. He attended Spring Grove High School and graduated in 2002. Danny worked with his father in his trucking business and on the farm. He was currently working for Ken’s Repair Service in Houston. Danny enjoyed working on his cars and trucks, hanging out with his friends, working with his fellow employees, animals, fishing and, most of all, spending time with his two children.
Danny is survived by his two children, Meryah and Ethan; parents, Terry and Rhonda of Spring Grove, Minn.; two sisters, Rachel (Dustin) Bauer of West Concord, Minn., and their children, Randy and Michael, and Sarah (Travis Moen) Burfield and their son, Jackson, of Spring Grove; paternal grandfather, Ron Krueger of Stoddard; paternal grandmother, Gladys Burfield of rural Caledonia, Minn.; and by many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Scott Allen Raynor; maternal grandparents, Francis Clifford Thomas and Helen Rachel Thomas; paternal grandfather, Russell Burfield; Uncle Guy Thomas; Aunt Pat Hummell; and brother-in-law, Ronnie Lange.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston, Minn., with the Rev. T. Wayne Larson officiating. Burial will be in Money Creek Cemetery in Money Creek, Minn. Friends may call from
4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hoff Funeral Homes-Houston Chapel and one hour prior to services Friday at the church.

Thomas ‘Tom’ Karl Severson
BANGOR — Thomas “Tom”Karl Severson, 63, of Bangor passed away Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center in La Crosse after a short illness.
Tom was born Dec. 23, 1944, in La Crosse to Christ and Mildred (Shane) Severson. He graduated from Bangor High School in 1963. Tom married Theresa Beranek on July 10, 1965, in Sparta. He farmed on the family farm in the town of Burns until 1979 and for the past 28 years had been working for the village of Bangor. Tom was a member of the Bangor Volunteer Fire Department and Bangor Rod & Gun Club.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Theresa; four sons, Timothy (Johanna) of Onalaska, Terry (Tracy) of Turtle Creek, Penn., and Troy and Theodore, both of Bangor; six grandchildren, Brian, Dylan, Patrick, Noah, Isaiah and Sierria; one brother, Jon (Diane) Severson of Hastings, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Marabeth (Don) Kibler, of Ettrick; one aunt; many cousins, nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Emil Schmitz Jr. and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert; a granddaughter, Melinda; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Edward and Esther Beranek.
Memorial services will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Jandt Funeral Home, Hwy. 162 and Hattan St., Bangor. The Rev. J. David Bersagel will officiate. A private family burial will be held in Burns Cemetery at a later date. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 5 p.m. until time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
Kathleen ‘Kay’ I. Storbakken
WESTBY — Kathleen “Kay” I. Storbakken, 82, of rural Westby died Sunday Nov. 2, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.
She was born Dec. 19, 1925, to Buford and Kate (Riley) Collicutt in Racine, Wis. Kay married Myron Storbakken on Nov. 13, 1947, in Eau Claire, Wis. The couple operated a grocery store/tavern in Exeland, Wis., for about four years. They then farmed the rest of their married life in rural Westby.
Kay was an Irish girl who was taught by a Norwegian mother-in-law how to make the best lefse in the region. She had a natural compassion and generosity toward others. Kay was very caring to animals and loved all of nature. She enjoyed running, biking and walking for exercise. Kay also enjoyed discussing politics of which she had very firm opinions. Her easygoing attitude made her friends easily and she had many.
Kay was a member of Coon Valley Lutheran Church, WELCA and Circle, and the Norseland Nursing Home Auxiliary. She also volunteered at Norskedalen.
Survivors include her husband, Myron; a son, Michael of Seattle; a daughter, Patty (Roger) Bollinger of Phoenix; two grandchildren, Karta Khalsa of Seattle and Dash Khalsa of Phoenix; a sister, Judy (Norman) Thorson of Exeland; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Randy in infancy; and two sisters, Virginia Landsdorf and Ann Pastika.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Coon Valley Lutheran Church. The Rev. Mitzi Miyamoto will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from noon until service time at the church.
Memorials may be given to Coon Valley Lutheran Church.

Ralph Frank Heberlein
CALEDONIA, Minn. — Ralph Frank Heberlein, 82, of Caledonia died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at Caledonia Care and Rehab in Caledonia.
He was born Jan. 30, 1926, in La Crosse to Frank and Matilda (Forer) Heberlein. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific. Ralph married Teresa Bauer on May 1, 1951, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Caledonia. She preceded him in death
May 29, 1983. He was a lifetime farmer in the Caledonia area and worked for many years at Caledonia Farmer’s Livestock. He also served on the Union Township Board for several years and was a member of American Legion Post 191 and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Caledonia. Ralph enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and cutting wood.
He is survived by his seven children, Ken Heberlein, Jeanne Schulte, Gary (Polly) Heberlein, Al (Sheila) Heberlein, Tom (Colleen) Heberlein, and Janet (Gordy) Becker, all of Caledonia, and Mary (Kevin) Silha of La Crosse, 16 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a stepgreat-grandchild; a brother, Glen “Butch” (Liz) Heberlein of La Crescent, Minn.; and two sisters, Phyllis (Bernie) Feld-meier of Hokah, Minn., and Arlene Swindeman of Silver Bay, Minn.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Donny; and a son-in-law, Paul Schulte.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Caledonia. Father Gregory Leif will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Cale-donia. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Holy Family Hall, behind St. Mary’s Church, 415 S. Pine St., Cale-donia, where a prayer service will be said at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to services at the church Friday.

Irma M. Wolfe
WONEWOC, Wis. — Irma M. Wolfe, 107, of Wonewoc died suddenly on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, in her home.
She was born May 27, 1901, in the town of Woodland, the daughter of William and Bertha (Raese) Degner. She was married to Amandus Wolfe on June 28, 1925, in Wonewoc. Irma loved life, her stronghold was her faith. She cared for and loved every member of her family. She farmed and loved to garden; her passion was flowers. She was a teacher of life’s knowledge, and she taught many. She would always brighten a dark day with her giggle. She loved to read and was always aware of what was going on and had a great antidote. She was a lady who always stopped to smell the roses. Her famous words were, “That’s life.” She will be missed greatly by her family and a community who all loved her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mandus, on Dec. 9, 1972; two sons, Derryl in 1956 and Dale in 1992; five brothers, Herbert, Walter, Alvin, William and Elmer; two sisters, Martha and Gertrude; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Wolfe; and a son-in-law, Jack Sosinsky.
She is survived by her children, Duane Wolfe of Wonewoc, Dolores Sosinsky of De Forest, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; two great-great-great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; along with other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Wonewoc, with Pastor Joseph Fricke officiating. Burial will follow in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, Wonewoc. Friends may call Friday at the church from 11 a.m. until time of services.
The family requests memorials of remembrance be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Dorothy J. Fischer, 71, of La Crosse died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at Onalaska Care Center in Onalaska. Funeral services will be announced by Woodruff-Jandt Funeral Home of La Crosse.
John W. Brown
John W. Brown, 83, of La Crosse passed away Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center.
He was born in Abbotsford, Wis., on Sept. 20, 1925, to Edgar and Bertha (Schmidt) Brown. John attended schools in Colby, Wis. On April 11, 1945, John married Geraldine Jolivette in Abbotsford, Wis. John worked for Gross Common Carrier as a truck mechanic, retiring in 1988.
John was an active member of Olivet Lutheran Church, which he served on the church counsel. He was active in the Masonic Fraternity as a member of La Crosse Masonic Lodge 190. He was also a member of Ruth Chapter 23 OES, La Crosse York Right Bodies, Scottish Right Bodies and Zor Shrine.
John was an avid sportsman, belonging to muzzel-loader and trap-shooting clubs. He loved to travel, taking scenic bus trips out west with his wife, Geraldine.
John is survived by his loving wife, Geraldine; five daughters, Donna Rautio of Milwaukee, April Butterfield of La Crosse, Susan (Cecil) Koester of Franklin, Wis., Carol Brown of Columbia, South America, and Sandra (James) Bivens of Holmen; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, three sister-in-laws; and many neices, nephews, special friends and great neighbors.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sharon Marie; a son, John Paul; a granddaughter; and two brothers.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Olivet Lutheran Church, 2100 Bainbridge St., La Crosse. The Rev. David Baldukas will officiate, and burial will be in Oak Grove Cemtery, La Crosse. APPLE VALLEY, Minn. — John A. Osterhout, 58, of Apple Valley, born Oct. 11, 1950, to Mark and Helen Osterhout in Watertown, Wis., passed away Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008.
John served in the Army National Guard during the Viet-nam War and was a 12-year employee at Hyatt Regency Ho-tel in downtown Minneapolis.
John is survived by wife, Priscilla; son, Matt; daughter, Molly (Dan) Cornelison; grandchildren, Rebecca and Kevin; siblings, George (Alice), Nancy (David) Lorbecki, David (Diane) and Jeff (Patty); and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
