A safe port for planes: Airport wins award

.
The La Crosse Municipal Airport has received the Federal Aviation Administra-tion’s 2008 safety award for

the Great Lakes region, beating out 94 other commercial airports in cities including Chicago, Detroit and Minneapolis.
“People can rest assured that this is one of the safest airports in the United States,” Mayor Mark Johnsrud said prior to a meeting of the city’s Aviation Board.

Airport manager Dan Wruck credits a recently completed construction project for the award.

Funded primarily by the FAA, the $3.8 million project extended a taxiway and

separated two runways, eliminating a potential confusion for pilots.

There are a total of 642 airports in the eight-state region comprised of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and the Dakotas.

" Safe, Do two airplanes actually land at the airport on the same day, much less at the same time..$3.8 million.....wow. Can't remember the last time I was out there. Working two jobs to pay my La Crosse taxes doesn't leave much time for travel. "

" If not for Fort McCoy, this airport probably would have been shut down a while ago. Feel fortunate that we have the access to an airport in our back yard at all. Imagine the amount of business in La Crosse that would be negatively effected if people had to drive here from Minneapolis or Chicago. I guess we can thank President Bush for going to war on false pretenses, that we still have an airport. I keed I keed. "

" yes, the cost of the 'project' probably is in line. but the 'need' for the 'project' is pure 100% USDA Prime Cut Pork Tenderloin. "

" It should be safe, the La Crosse taxpayers pay a La Crosse police officer to be there 24 hours a day. "

" random annoying bozo,

It seems you know little about air side operations, relating to airport management. The construction of taxiways and runways is VERY expensive due to many factors; weight, expansion, and cohesion amongst a few.

The cost of this project is completely reasonable. If you consider a taxiway/runway life expectancy and the economic impact the airport has on the community, you might see the benefits of this project.

But if you wish to see the infrastructure of this community fail, it's your decision. "

" $3,800,000.00 for a taxiway? and how many commercial flights a day? and how do you spell P-O-R-K? "
