Nine people representing groups as diverse as the Sierra Club, the Franciscan Sisters and the League of Women Voters gathered in Rep. Ron Kind’s La Crosse office Tuesday to encourage the Congressman to work for environmental sustainability and a “green” economy.
As Congress and the White House work to turn around the economy, they should do so with an eye towards the environment, said Barbara Frank, a national board member of the Sierra Club and co-chairwoman of the newly formed Coulee Partners for Sustainability.
“One of the things that makes me hopeful about Obama is he’s an integrative thinker,” said Sister Anita Beskar. “It’s not just energy, and it’s not just water. … It all fits together.”
The visit was part of a coordinated effort by 1 Sky in which more than 4,000 volunteers visited offices of congressional leaders around the country.
The nonprofit group Sky 1 calls for a cap on greenhouse gas emissions, a moratorium on coal-fired power plants and the creation of 5 million jobs to conserve energy and develop new technologies.
