Activists: Don’t let economy overshadow environment

.
With the economy dominating agendas, environmental activists want to be sure President-elect Barack Obama and the new Congress don’t neglect campaign pledges to support climate-friendly legislation.

Nine people representing groups as diverse as the Sierra Club, the Franciscan Sisters and the League of Women Voters gathered in Rep. Ron Kind’s La Crosse office Tuesday to encourage the Congressman to work for environmental sustainability and a “green” economy.
As Congress and the White House work to turn around the economy, they should do so with an eye towards the environment, said Barbara Frank, a national board member of the Sierra Club and co-chairwoman of the newly formed Coulee Partners for Sustainability.

“One of the things that makes me hopeful about Obama is he’s an integrative thinker,” said Sister Anita Beskar. “It’s not just energy, and it’s not just water. … It all fits together.”

The visit was part of a coordinated effort by 1 Sky in which more than 4,000 volunteers visited offices of congressional leaders around the country.

The nonprofit group Sky 1 calls for a cap on greenhouse gas emissions, a moratorium on coal-fired power plants and the creation of 5 million jobs to conserve energy and develop new technologies.

" And how many of these jobs will ne taken by illegals because the unions will try to muscle their way in and the illegals will work for less? "

" The five million green jobs will come from energy efficiency projects retrofitting buildings to make them more energy efficient, investing in the renewable energy industry, manufacturing wind turbines and solar panels, manufacturing plug-in hybrids, investing in green infrastructure including a smart electrical grid, public transportation projects - all of this is necessary to combat climate change and has the potential to unlock tremendous economic growth. " I wouldn't worry about the trees. They're all going to be gone since many people will be cutting them down to heat their house this winter.

Ain't life grand? "

" There is good reason to protect the environment. We live here. We breath the air. We drink the water. It's worth taking care of in the best ways we can. "

" It is just plain and simple. Americans Mfg. Companies cannot, and now choose not, to try and compete with the foreign rivals. It's just impossible. When Clinton placed NAFTA into effect, it simply placed every American worker on a benefit and global pay scale. So, unless you work for the government, or are a truck driver to haul foreign goods to Wal Mart, don't look for a Mfg. job, Green or otherwise. Our own government drove jobs to China or Mexico. "

" If the government bails out the auto industry and the union contracts your union will be indebted to the government. Do you really want them in your union pocketbooks? The gov is already trying to attach the railroad pension to the social security system. Wait, all you union people who voted for Obamanomics will owe the gov big time. No more railroad pension, it will be added to social security to bail out the over spending and raping of that system by your democratic friends in congress. What a stab in the back
Also, the government will not want to wait 30 yrs for their share of any re-assesment of property taxes. They need the money now.
Why was the League of Women Voters there? I though they are non-partisan. Oh, is this subject a non-partisan issue. How many in this meeting voted for any Repubs; ever in their life? "

" Block grants, (another name for taxes) where in the sam hill do you think the government's money comes from, TREES, good grief every dollar they blow comes from you and me, and right now they are too busy filling the pocket books of their buddies on both sides of the isle, to worry about the taxpayer and what they can afford and what is best for them. Mark my words, the auto companies and their fat union workers both active and retired will be bailed out by the poor taxpayer if not now, then definitely when the Democrats take over. "

" For starters, communities should use block grant money to assess residence insulation and windows. If these are found to be lacking, property owners should get assistance replacing/upgrading them. This would help put people to work manufacturing windows and installing upgrades. Then property owners would get an assessment on their property tax bills over a 30 year period. They would probably save more each year on heating and cooling costs. We would save energy AND put people to work. Getting serious about climate change would re-energize manufacturing and help create good paying UNION jobs. Unions and energy efficiency are the way OUT of the financial crisis Bush's crony capitalism has created. "

" We need to keep the government out of business, and manufacturing. With outrageous union wages and benefits, a you owe it to us work focus, coupled with government agencies such as OSHA, DNR, INS, IRS, DHILR and etc,, etc,,, it's no wonder Americans cannot compete in our own country for our own economy. I will tell you who will have these new green jobs, CHINA!! Change is on its way, and it will be the only thing we have left in our pockets. Its sooo sad,, but sooo true!! "

" just call me curious, but who is going to 'create' these 5 million jobs? government? how did they come up with the number 5 million? did they just pull a number out of their arse? what will these 5 million employees do? what are these 'new' technologies? everything bantied about is all 'old' technology that's been around for decades, but just doesn't work that good.
it's one thing to just pull some 'ideas' out of your rectum, but it's a whole different concept to actually have real 'ideas' that accomplish something other than self serving drivel. "
